In the movie "The Blues Brothers," Jake and Elwood have a hilarious reunion with a nun from their younger days at the orphange in Chicago.
She tells them about the $5,000 in taxes due and the deadline. Then she did something that every Catholic will remember to one degree or another:
"I prayed so hard for you. It saddens and hurts me that the two young men whom I raised to believe in The Ten Commandments have returned to me as two thieves with filthy mouths and bad attitudes.Get out! And don't come back until you've redeemed yourselves!"
And so they did. They put the band together and showed up with the money to save the orphanage.
Maybe it's just a movie for some. However, it's a bit more than that for those of us who went to Catholic schools.
As every Catholic who attended parochial school knows, nuns will get in your heart and you will never forget their "right and wrong" rants. Of course, the wooden ruler, and those weekly report cards that your parents had to sign, were pretty effective too.
We learned that Justice Sonia Sotomayor has just delayed a key part of ObamaCare:
"Sotomayor acted on a request from an organization of Catholic nuns in Denver, the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged. Its request for an emergency stay had been denied earlier in the day by a federal appeals court.Sotomayor gave government officials until 10 a.m. EST Friday to respond to her order."
I don't know if Sotomayor, who attended Catholic Spellman High School in the Bronx, had her encounter with the nuns like the afformentioned Jake and Elwood.
Maybe it's a coincidence. Nevertheless, I think that the sisters at Catholic Spellman are really proud of their graduate this morning. Their prayers were indeed answered.
