A word about the elections down Mexico way

A word about the elections down Mexico way: Mexicans elect a new president every six years.  So it occasionally happens that the U.S. and Mexico have elections on the same year. Such is 2024, when voters in both countries will get to choose a new president and Congress.

A word about January 25

We remember Don Maynard who was born in Texas on this day in 1935 and passed away January 2022.     Maynard played with the Jets who won Super Bowl III.   We remember him for a clutch catch in the AFL championship against the Raiders.  It was that TD that put the Jets in the Super Bowl against the Colts.

Jamesetta Hawkins was born in Los Angeles on this day in 1938.   We know her as Etta James, one of the most unique voices of pop music.     Her career started with gospel music and she eventually recorded in Chicago.     She was the opening act with The Rolling Stones for a time in the 1980's and sang in the opening ceremonies of the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics.    Etta won 2 Grammys for her work.

Who saw the movie "Saturday Night Fever" many years ago?  Maybe you danced to "More than a woman" and some of the other songs by The Bee Gees.  On this day in 1978, the soundtrack LP moved to # 1 on Billboard USA.  It stayed at # 1 for a long time!

We remember Wally Bunker who was born in Seattle on this day in 1945.   Bunker had a great start with the Orioles.   He went 19-5 with the 1964 Orioles.    Bunker was one of the many young arms along with Dave McNally and Jim Palmer.  In 1966, Wally pitched a 1-0 victory in game 3 of the 1966 World Series.   It put the O's up 3-0 in that Series against LA.   He ended up with the expansion KC Royals after the 1968 draft.     Actually, he pitched well in KC, won 12 games and threw the first pitch in the expansion team's history.   Bunker retired after after the 1971 season.
