June 23, 1971: What a day for Rick Wise of the Phillies

On this day in 1971, Rick Wise had one spectacular day:  He pitched a no-hitter and hit 2 HR.     No other pitcher had done before or since!

Rick's amazing day made him one of the most popular Phillies of all time.

Rick Wise broke with the Phillies at 18 in 1964.    Overall, he pitched until 1982.

His career numbers were pretty good:   188-181 with a very respectable 3.69 ERA.     His numbers have to be put in the context that he pitched for bad teams in Philadelphia.

In 1975, Rick Wise was traded to Boston and won 19 games for the 1975 Boston Red Sox who lost to the Reds in seven games.

Rick was a workhorse completing 138 games.

June 6, 1971 and the last "The Ed Sullivan Show"

Back in those early days of “el exilio”, our family sat down to watch TV and learn some English.
One of our favorites was “The Ed Sullivan Show“.  As my mother often said:  “Este show tiene algo para todo el mundo”, or her way of saying that the show had a lot of variety.

On this day in 1971, The Ed Sullivan said goodnight for the last time.
From 1948 to 1971, Ed Sullivan presented the biggest acts in show business, from opera to comedy to Elvis and The Beatles.
Sullivan didn’t say much.   His presentations were short but millions tuned in to see his shows.
The show’s greatest audience was on February 9, 1964:  73 million tuned in to catch The Beatles and things were never the same!
Sullivan died in 1974.    We remember him as a genius of variety TV.   We miss those shows!

We remember Levi Stubbs (1936-2008)

We remember Levi Stubbs who was born in Detroit on this day in 1936.  He died in 2008.

In the heyday of Top 40 radio, the DJ's featured something called "the battle of the bands".

It was one group against another, say The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones.

I always had real trouble picking a favorite when it was The Temptations vs The Four Tops.   I loved both their music so much.

It's still hard to pick a favorite from The Four Tops.   I loved their music and Levi Stubb's vocals.
