We remember Billy Paul (1934-2016)

"Me and Mrs Jones" by Billy Paul was one of the best songs of the 1970s.   It was one of the best expressions of what they used to call Philadelphia Soul.

Billy Paul was born Paul Williams in New Jersey on this day in 1934.  He died in 2016.

What a great voice!

2001: President Bush warned that it would be a long war

President Bush announced that US troops were on the march in Afghanistan on this day in 2001.
He spoke to the nation and said something that sounds rather prophetic today:
He also warned that the war in Afghanistan would likely be only the first front in a long struggle against terrorism. He vowed to continue to take what he called the “war on terror” to those countries that sponsored, harbored or trained terrorists.
And here we are.    Sadly, President Obama's policies set back our gains in Iraq and the region.    We made gains under President Trump.  Time will tell whether President Biden's poorly executed withdrawal will require our troops to return.

Let me recommend President Bush's "Decision points".

It was February 1964 and Mr Sullivan introduced the US to The Beatles:  73 million Americans watched them!

It was stunning and a "game changer" as people like to say.    By the way, you can get the entire Ed Sullivan performances here!

We remember Bob Forsch (1950-2011)

We remember Bob Forsch, who was born in Sacramento on this day in 1950.

Bob broke with St. Louis in 1974 and turned into a very steady pitcher in the National League.    He won 168 games with a 3.76 ERA over 19 seasons and pitched in the 1982, 1985 and 1987 World Series.     Forsch threw a no-hitter in 1978 against the Phillies and in 1983 against Expos.

Bob died in 2011.   His brother, Ken, was also a major league pitcher.

On this day in 1959, Alaska became the 49th state.

More recently, Alaska gave us Governor Palin who was the GOP nominee for Vice President in 2008.

January 1959 and the destruction of Cuba

Image result for cuba revolution 1959 images
It’s another January and a time to celebrate a new year but also remember a few weeks in 1959.
No one understood years ago what it all meant. We certainly had no idea that a communist dictatorship was coming.  At least, my parents did not.
Within months, Cuba began to change, i.e. the mass executions, the mock trials, the political prisons, the attacks on the press and the radicalization of the regime.
Elections never came and Castro quickly started to blame the US to distract Cubans from all the failed promises.
We were the fortunate ones. We got to grow up in the US.  Some were not so unfortunate.  They had to stay in Cuba or saw their fathers executed or spend time in a political prison.
A sad anniversary for Cubans, and for truth and freedom.  It turned out to be a terrible month for the people of Cuba.
