Are you doing less Facebooking?

Over the last few weeks, we’ve heard about Facebook playing politics with its news feed.  Well, it looks as though Facebook users are responding by spending less time on the site.
The updated data shows that Facebook’s core platform lost 18% in time spent, which is a huge change from the month before.  This, says Pivotal, reflects a “24% decline in time spent per person.”  Instagram, too, saw some poor engagement numbers.  Though aggregated consumption went up, the user base went up at a higher clip, meaning that time per person went down 9%.
Overall, this shows a mounting problem for Facebook: People are just engaging less with it.
Algorithm changes may have something to do with it, and Zuckerberg even told shareholders to expect such a change.
But these numbers could also indicate that people are becoming more fatigued by the platform.
If this trend continues, we may be seeing a shift in the Facebook-Google duopoly.
The question is: Who will take Facebook’s place?
I don’t know who will take Facebook’s place, but I’m one of those spending less time on the site.

The bullet train in California is quite a story!

Why do you think that they move from California to Texas?   Here is another reason:
The projected cost of California's bullet train from San Francisco to Los Angeles has jumped to $77 billion and the opening date has been pushed back four years to 2033, according to a business plan released Friday.
The two-year plan presented by the California High-Speed Rail Authority is the first under new chief executive Brian Kelly, who has promised more transparency about the project's challenges after years of cost increases and delays.
Expensive train to say the least.

And very dysfunctional state as well!   What do you expect when the public sector unions own the Democrats?

Mexico's internal problems and Playa del Carmen

There is a lot of talk about "el muro" in Mexico. The political class should be talking about the chaos in the country and how this is impacting the economy.

Today, we read that the US closed a consulate office indefinitely.   This is from news reports:
"The State Department abruptly closed the US consulate in the popular tourist destination of Playa del Carmen late Wednesday evening and ordered  US government employees to stay out of the area.
They warn other Americans either in the region or thinking of traveling to it about a “real crime threat” from local drug cartels......"
This is awful news for a country that relies on tourism dollars.

Baseball and winter

The Rangers and other teams will start the 2018 season on the last week of March.    It makes sense!

It's time for MLB to consider a few options:

1) Start the first round of playoffs on the last weekend of September. This will require cutting back to the old 154 game schedule or starting the season in late March.

2) Play afternoon baseball in October. There is a huge difference between a night and afternoon game.

It's stupid to play a post-season game in these temperatures.

We remember March 4th in US history
