I thought that everyone wanted to get out of Afghanistan...

(My new American Thinker)

In the interest of full disclosure, I supported leaving a force and air base in Afghanistan.  This is not because I believe in "endless wars" but rather because I believe in "endless terrorism."   In other words, the terrorists get a vote and they usually choose to stay in the business of terrorism.  We may choose to leave but they choose to follow us.

Today, we learned that Americans want out but not the Biden way, as we see in a new poll:

With fewer than 4 in 10 Americans approving of President Joe Biden's handling of Afghanistan, there is overwhelming bipartisan support for keeping U.S. troops in the country until all Americans and Afghans who aided the United States during the 20-year war have been evacuated, a new ABC News/Ipsos poll finds.

Although President Joe Biden has held firm that all U.S. troops must be out of the country by Tuesday, regardless of whether the evacuation mission at hand is complete, Americans broadly disagree, according to the poll.

Of course.  What American wants to see his country humiliated in this fashion or leave our people behind enemy lines?

Once again, we see how wrong the experts turned out to be.

Add to this picture the depressing scene of an aging president who won't answer questions. The media is asking about a situation that involves the lives of U.S. citizens, Afghan cooperators who are likely to get punished, and women who will be mistreated.  No answer.

Where are the feminists?  Why aren't they calling on President Biden to support the women of Afghanistan? Total silence.

So here we are and most Americans are not happy with where we are.

The Supreme Court just pulled Biden out of a hole

(My new American Thinker post)

Another day and another defeat for President Biden in the courts. This is from Adam Shaw:

The Supreme Court’s ruling late Tuesday, which ordered the Biden administration to reinstate the Trump-era Remain-in-Mexico policy, marks the latest legal defeat for the administration on the subject of immigration.

In a 6-3 decision, the court denied a request to stop a federal court ruling ordering the administration to reinstate the Migrant Protection Protocols – which has become known as "Remain-in-Mexico" – a major 2019 border security program that kept migrants in Mexico as they awaited their hearings.

As Howard Cossell would say:  Down goes Biden Down goes Biden.

Opinions aside, there are two big winners from this ruling.

First, the Biden Administration has been pulled out of the hole that they put themselves in months ago.  Opening the border in the middle of a pandemic put many Democrats in electoral risk, such as Representative Henry Cuellar from South Texas.  They will publicly oppose the opinion and pop champagne in private that some order will be restored.

Second, President Lopez-Obrador of Mexico must be happy.  The so called "Remain in Mexico" policy stopped the caravans and kept people in their home countries.  Why walk to the border if you have to remain in Mexico?  These people could not work in Mexico anyway.  Also, the cartels won't have it so easy now that people are less likely to travel.  Why pay a cartel if you can't get into the US?

Thanks to the Supreme Court for bringing some common sense to the chaos on the border.  My guess is that Democrats are privately thankful too.

I guess we'll go back to talking Three Wise Men on January 6th

 (My new American Thinker post)

As a kid growing up in a Cuban Catholic home, I remember waking up on January 6th and rushing to see gifts the Three Wise Men had left us.  Kids in the U.S. had Santa Claus and we had Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, the three men who brought gifts to the baby Jesus.

Last January 6th, some people got out of control and charged the U.S. Capitol.  It was immediately called an "insurrection" and got President Trump impeached.

So where are we now?   It appears that a lot of people, especially in the news media, have a little explaining to do, as Julie Kelly wrote:

The Justice Department now seems to be prepping the ground for a major letdown. “The FBI has found scant evidence that the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was the result of an organized plot to overturn the presidential election result,” Reuters reported August 20. Nearly all of the cases, four former and current law enforcement officials said, are “one-offs” while roughly five percent are associated with so-called militia groups.

“FBI investigators did find that cells of protesters, including followers of the far-right Oath Keepers and Proud Boys groups, had aimed to break into the Capitol. But they found no evidence that the groups had serious plans about what to do if they made it inside,” the unnamed sources told Reuters.

So something happened but not an effort to overthrow the U.S. government or an insurrection.

Looking back, my gut feeling turned out to be right.  I recall going locally on TV  and saying that I did not think the rioters were Trump supporters.  Why not?  Because violence and chaos were never part of Trump rallies.  Did you ever hear of Trump supporters burning cities or attacking the police?  Secondly, I always wondered about Capitol security.  How could a major U.S. federal building be this unprotected?   What if real terrorists with bombs had actually attacked the Capitol?

So drop the probe unless we are looking into who decided to leave the Capitol unprotected.

Thank God that we are getting our January 6th back -- the day that brings back so many childhood memories in Cuba.

It depends what the definition of 'stranded' is.....

 (My new American Thinker)

To be fair, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has the worst job in Washington D.C.  She has to explain the unexplainable.   On Monday, she had an exchange with Peter Doocy who is apparently the only reporter with a pulse in that room.  It's hard to believe that these are the same reporters who turned into wolves every time they saw President Trump.  Anyway, back to the exchange:

Psaki said it was "irresponsible" to say that Americans are stranded in Afghanistan. "I think it's irresponsible to say Americans are stranded. They are not. We are committed to bringing Americans who want to come home, home."

Doocy followed up and asked whether "there are no Americans stranded" is the official White House position.

"I'm just calling you out for saying we are stranding Americans in Afghanistan when we have been very clear that we are not leaving Americans who want to return home," Psaki said. "We are going to bring them home and I think that's important for the American public to hear and understand."

Wow.  I thought that Bill Clinton was whispering in Jen's ear.

Of course they are stranded, or maybe stuck outside the airport.   The definition of stranded is "unable to leave somewhere because of a problem such as not having any transportation or money."  it sorts of sounds like the situation of Americans or our allies on the other side of the airport.

I think I understand what Miss Psaki is trying to say.  Her message is that the Americans are not stuck there unless we declare that they are helplessly stuck there.   In the meantime, there are God only knows how many Americans who are wondering how they are going to make it to the airport.  Let's hope that they can do it before August 31st because all bets are off after that!

Maybe the Babylon Bee has these people figured out:   "Tired Of Being President, Biden Hangs 'Trump Won' Sign Out Of White House Window."   Yes, the return of the smart people to Washington is not turning out to be what they had planned.  It's like the one stranded is the Biden administration.

The 25th Amendment is about physical incapacity, not Biden's incompetence

(My new American Thinker post)

Back in my college days, a fellow student asked the professor about the 25th Amendment and he said something like this:  "What happens if the president suffers a stroke and can't return to the office?  Or is a vegetable?"

We laughed a bit at the vegetable line but got the point.  You can't have the leader of the world incapacitated and connected to a life machine.

Section 4 addresses the dramatic case of a President who may be unable to fulfill his constitutional role but who cannot or will not step aside. It provides both a decision-maker and a procedure. The initial deciding group is the Vice President and a majority of either the Cabinet or some other body that Congress may designate (though Congress has never done so). If this group declares a President “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” the Vice President immediately becomes Acting President. If and when the President pronounces himself able, the deciding group has four days to disagree. If it does not, the President retakes his powers. But if it does, the Vice President keeps control while Congress quickly meets and makes a decision. The voting rule in these contested cases favors the President; the Vice President continues acting as President only if two-thirds majorities of both chambers agree that the President is unable to serve.

Again, we've never used this before and it will be difficult to get two-third of the Congress to go along unless the medical evidence is overwhelming.

The problem with President Biden is that he is not really incapacitated.  Yes, he is a bit strange and shows signs of senility, but that's not incapacitated.

Senator Tim Scott is calling on the cabinet to remove the president.  I understand the frustration but President Biden's problems must be resolved by voters.  Making bad decisions, from closing a critical energy pipeline to opening the border, or creating the Afghanistan crisis, will be eventually settled by voters in 2022.

The talk about the 25th is interesting but not realistic at the moment.

Of course, all bets are off if the first lady steps in to save the president from further humiliation.  Politics aside, it can’t be fun watching your husband do those press conferences.

'Stand by your man' not something Kamala does well!

(My new American Thinker post)

Former Secretary Clinton set the tone back in 1992:

"“I’m not sitting here some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette.”

It looks like we are watching Kamala's version of Hillary's line.  Of course, Hillary was talking about standing by her husband the candidate.  Kamala refuses to stand by her man the president.

What do you do when you get tired of standing behind Joe Biden wearing that mask?  Well, you can use your eyes or body language to tell the world that Willie Brown was right about this thing called the vice-presidency.  Or, you can take a fancy plane out of town and tell everybody in Asia that the U.S. is as firm as ever in supporting our allies.

Well, we will see how this trip goes but the lady Vice President is on her way:

The vice president is expected to use the trip to communicate U.S. views regarding China's growing power and influence in the region -- including the communist regime’s efforts to take control of the South China Sea.

Harris' Sunday plans following the long journey were not immediately clear.

On Monday, she is scheduled to speak by phone with Singapore President Halimah Yacob and participate in a bilateral meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, according to The Associated Press.   Harris and the prime minister are expected to field questions from reporters during a joint news conference, the AP reported.

She is also scheduled to deliver a speech aboard a U.S. combat ship in Singapore, the report said.

We will see how the men and women on that combat ship react.   I'm sure that they are watching their brothers in arms defending the Kabul airport.

To be fair, vice presidents take foreign trips.  VP Harris is not the first.  At the same time, I can't recall the last time that a # 2 had a scheduled visit to the place that everyone is comparing Afghanistan to, i.e. Vietnam.

I can't believe that they couldn't reschedule this one along the grounds that the VP needs to stay in Washington because there are urgent matters on the agenda.  On the other hand, maybe President Biden was happy to see her go, given how unhappy she looks behind him.

"Stand by your man" not a song on the VP Harris playlist!

Delaware is beautiful this time of year...but...

(My new American Thinker post)

The president and first lady are back in Delaware and singing along with Perry Como:

Oh what did Del-a-ware boy, what did Delaware
What did Del-a-ware boy, what did Delaware...

According to news reports:

President Biden is once again scheduled to head home to Delaware Saturday, as thousands of Americans and Afghan allies remain stranded in Afghanistan following the Taliban's takeover last weekend.

The White House announced that Biden would leave for Wilmington around midday following a meeting with his national security team to get updated on the situation. Vice President Kamala Harris, who was traveling to Southeast Asia, is expected to attend virtually.

As of late Friday evening, Biden had no public events scheduled for Saturday or Sunday.

Normally, we would be very happy to see a couple enjoy their retirement in a place like Delaware.

So what in the heck is going on?  Why is this president always away from the White House?  No one would be complaining if the economy were great or the world were peaceful or the border situation were under control.

I don't know for sure, but this may have been part of the deal to get Joe out of retirement.  Maybe the phone call went something like this:

Mr. Vice President, we need you to run one more race.

Why?  Call Beto, Sanders, Warren, the guy from South Bend, Indiana whatever his name is...

Mr. Vice President, they don't cut it.

Why me?  I've never won a national race.  I lost three times...come on, man!

Mr. Vice President, we need you.  It's you or another Trump term for sure.

OK.  Here is the deal.  If I win, I work a couple of hours a day and fly to Delaware every weekend.

Mr. Vice President, you got a deal.  We'll surround you with people who'll run the country, write your speeches, and make you so popular unlike Trump.

OK.  It's a deal, but don't complain if things don't work out.

Well, maybe it didn't happen quite that way.  Maybe he really wanted to be president and get back in the kitchen at his age.

Honestly, I don't think so.  Life has thrown the Delaware plan a major curve ball, from the price of gasoline to the border and now Afghanistan.

Wonder if anyone explained this to V.P. Harris?  She'll be owning all of this a lot sooner than she thinks.
