1966: "Paperback writer" by The Beatles was # 1 this week

It's a shame that I did not save all of those wonderful 45 cover photos.   My guess is that this one is quite a collector's item.   After all, George and John are shown playing the guitar as lefties.

"Paperback writer" was one of the group's finest 45's.   The B-side of "Rain" was a sign of things to come.

The two songs were introduced on The Ed Sullivan Show in 2 fantastic promo films.    They were available on YouTube but no more.

The Beatles released 3 LPs between Christmas 1965 and the summer of 1966.   However,  "Paperback writer", or the B-side of "Rain", were not included in the US versions of "Rubber Soul", "Yesterday and today" or "Revolver".

Why wasn't this 45 included in the "Revolver" LP?   It seems to fit that one beautifully.

By the way, the book below has "a song by song" story of every one recorded and released by the group.   It is a wonderful resource to remember all of those tunes that we listened to on vinyl many years ago.

We remember Harmon Killebrew (1936-2011)

The great Harmon Killebrew, one of great baseball sluggers of our youth, was born on this day in 1936.   He passed away in 2011 of cancer.  He was 74.

Killebrew started with the original Washington Senators who became the  Minnesota Twins in 1961.  He won the AL MVP in 1969, played in the 1965 World Series plus the ALCS in 1969 & 70.

From 1964 to 1971, Killebrew and Tony Oliva, who usually batted in front of Harmon, were one of the best hitting combinations ever.   Tony won 3 batting titles and Harmon just hit a ton of home runs.

We remember those "titanic home runs" that got lost in the clouds all over baseball parks.    Killebrew was indeed one of my all time favorite players.

June 28, 1941: Joe DiMaggio reached # 40 on the way to 56

We remember one of sports' most amazing accomplishments, i.e. the 56-game hitting streak that kept the entire nation checking the daily sports pages for updates.

Joe DiMaggio entered historic territory on this day in 1941 when he went 2-for-5 and cracked the "40 circle".

He became the 5th major leaguer to do so:
Willie Keeler 45 1896-1897
Bill Dahlen 42 1894
George Sisler 41 1922
Ty Cobb       40 1911
We should add that Pete Rose got to 44 in 1978.

June 25, 1942: Eisenhower assumed command

Dwight Eisenhower was one of the giants of the 20th century.

On this day in 1942, General Dwight D. Eisenhower became commander of all U.S. troops in the European theater of World War II.

Ike, as he was called, was one of those men who comes along at the right time in a country’s history.   His work as a military man was exceptional.   His quiet and stable presidency was exactly what the nation needed after World War II and Korea.

1876: Battle of Little Bighorn

On this day in 1876, a major battle took place near southern Montana’s Little Bighorn River.

We remember the battle as General Custer’s "Last Stand"  and the worst defeat for US Army forces in the long Plains Indian War.

1967: The Beatles and “All you need is love” go on global TV

all-you-need-is-love-the-beatles-our-world-broadcast(My new American Thinker post)

The Beatles have been in the news this year.

First, we got to see the four working on material for an album. It was the closest to being in the studio with the band.  It was incredible to see an album being recorded from square one or sort of the musical equivalent of like watching sausage getting made.  Some of these songs were released as singles, like "Get Back" and many ended up on the Let it Be album. Honestly, I did not think that these were great songs but they are part of the band's history.

Second, Paul McCartney turned 80 last week and Ringo Starr will turn 82 in July.

Two weeks after Sgt. Pepper’s was released on June 1, 1967, The Beatles went global and presented “All You Need is Love” to the world. They performed the new song in an international telecast seen by millions, as we see here:

The satellite link-up was devised by the BBC, which took the idea to the European Broadcasting Union in 1966.

The project editor was BBC executive Aubrey Singer. Personalities, including Maria Callas and Pablo Picasso, from 19 nations performed in separate items from their respective countries.

The event, which lasted two-and-a-half hours, had the largest television audience to date.

No politicians or heads of state were allowed to take part in the broadcast, and no pre-recorded videotape or film was allowed. Around 10,000 technicians, producers and translators helped make the event happen; each country had its own announcers, with translators narrating where necessary.

National broadcasting companies from 14 countries provided material for the 125-minute programme, which was shown in black-and-white. The organizations involved were: Australia (ABC), Austria (ORF), Canada (CBC), Denmark (DZR), France (ORTF), Italy (RAI), Japan (NHK), Mexico (TS Mexicana), Spain (TVE), Sweden (SRT), Tunisia (RTT), United Kingdom (BBC), USA (NET) and West Germany (ARD), and the programme was also shown – without contributing their own content – in Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Switzerland.

In the week before broadcast, seven Eastern bloc countries -- led by the Soviet Union -- pulled out, apparently in protest to the Western nations’ response to the Six Day War.

The Beatles’ day began at 2pm with a camera rehearsal in EMI’s Studio One. An outside broadcast van was situated in the studio car park, which relayed the signal around the world via the Intelsat I (Early Bird), Intelsat II (Lana Bird) and ATS-1 satellites.

Wonder if Maria Callas and the Beatles were ever on the same program before? I don't think so.

All You Need is Love” became a # 1 song in July and was included in the Magical Mystery Tour album released later for Christmas.

"Wonderful summer": The girls loved this very popular summer song!

This is Robin Ward's "Wonderful summer".

It's a classic summer love song. It is also one of the few summer songs recorded by a female vocalist.

Robin Ward is one of the greatest "one hit wonders" in pop music.

Who was Robin Ward? We don't know much about her but she did record one of the most "girly" summer songs ever!

And the girls love this song:

"I want to thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life
It was so heavenly
You meant the world to me
And anyone could see that I was so in love
I want to thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life
I never will forget That summer day we met
You were so shy and yet you stole my heart away
We strolled along the sand Walking hand in hand
Then you kissed me and I knew
That I would love you my whole life through
I want to thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life
And though it broke my heart
That day we had to part
I'll always thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life" (lyrics)

"Surfer Girl" is just right for the first sign of summer!

Welcome to what really feels like the first week of summer.  I love Beach Boys songs about summer.  They are fantastic.

As I mentioned, Brian Wilson is a superb songwriter, arranger and pop music vocalist.

What do we listen to this year for our first song of summer song?  "California Girls"? "Surfin' USA"?  "The warmth of the sun"? "Surfin' Safari"?

I will pick "Surfer girl" this year and I hope that you like it as much as I do:

"Little surfer little one Made my heart come all undone
Do you love me, do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
I have watched you on the shore Standing by the ocean's roar
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl surfer girl
We could ride the surf together
While our love would grow
In my Woody I would take you everywhere I go
So I say from me to you
I will make your dreams come true
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well Girl surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well...."

Summer songs: Junior Walker's "What does it take"!

It's one of my all time favorite songs!  They are one of my favorite groups.

I'm talking about Jr Walker's "What does it take", a tune from school days and from the golden era of AM Top 40 radio.

He recorded other hits like "Shotgun", a great version of "These eyes" and some good albums. They sound better with age.

"What does it take" is still my favorite. I will add it to my I-Pod whenever I get one:
"What does it take (What does it take)To win your love for me? (To win your love for me)How can I make (How can I make)This dream come true for me? (Had a dream for you)Whoa, I just got to know (Have to know)
Ooo, baby 'cause I love you so'
Gonna blow for you'I tried, I tried, I tried, I tried In every way I could (Anyway I could)To make you see how much I love you (See how much I love you)Woo!I thought you understood (Thought you understood)So, you gotta make me see (Make me see)
What does it take To win your love for me?"

Had not heard "12:30" in a long time!

TwelveThirty.jpg
The Mamas and Papas were a very popular quartet many summers ago.

From left to right: Denny Doherty, Cass Elliott, a.k.a. Mama Cass, Michelle and John Phillips, the tall one with the hat! (Michelle is the only surviving member of the group. Cass died accidentally. Denny and John died of cancer recently!)

John Phillips wrote most of their big songs. They had hits like "California Dreamin" and "Monday Monday".

However, my favorite was always "12:30":

"I used to live in New York City
Every thing there was dark and dirty
Outside my window was a steeple
With a clock that always said 12:30
Young girls are coming to the canyon
And in the morning I can see them walking
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn
And I cant keep myself from talking.
At first so strange to feel so friendly
To say good morning and really mean it
To feel these changes happening in me
But not to notice till I feel it.
Young girls are coming to the canyon
And in the morning I can see them walking
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn
And I cant keep myself from talking.
Cloudy waters cast no reflection
Images of beauty lie there stagnant
Vibrations bounce in no direction
And lie there shattered into fragments.
Young girls are coming to the canyon
And in the morning I can see them walking
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn
And I cant keep myself from talking."

The Critters and "Younger girl"

The Critters were young guys from New Jersey.

Like many youngsters, they played rock in their garage and dreamed of a recording contract.

Eventually, their persistence was rewarded. They got a contract and recorded a couple of the nicest pop tunes ever.

The group had a wonderful sound.    Here is John Sebastian's "Younger girl" and "Mr. Diengly sad", their second best seller!

Happy weekend: Enjoy the first weekend of summer!

Their name is synonymous with summer. They are The Beach Boys and this is "All Summer Long":

Feels like summer so let's remember The Beach Boys!

The Beach Boys are the best American band of the rock era.

They were Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson (the Wilson brothers), cousin Al Jardine and good friend Mike Love.

They recorded a lot of hits. Their sound is synonymous with great harmonies, summer and young love.

My favorite song is "Wouldn't it be nice", a song about young love. It was also from "Pet sounds", their great and very influential album!

The Beach Boys started out a summer band but became one of the most influential rock groups of their time.

We remember Pete “Pistol” Maravich (1947-88)

2adccfd76025d31c1bab97c89d8ee818
Pete Maravich was born in Alquippa, Pennsylvania, on this day in 1947.    He was born in a basketball family and accomplished so much on the court.
It’s fair to say that Pete was a better college than NBA player.
Pete died suddenly in 1988 at 41 during a pick up game.   It was a shock, a real shock.

We remember Carl Hubbell (1903-1988)

We remember Carl Hubbell, one of the great lefties in major league history.    Hubbell was born in Carthage, Missouri on this day in 1903.

He broke with the Giants in 1928 and started 14 games.

He turned into one of the game's greatest pitchers:  253-164, 2.98 ERA & 260 complete games.   In other words, he completed more games than he won, a rather rare accomplishment.

Hubbell pitched a no-hitter in 1929 and won 24 consecutive games between 1936 (16) and 1937 (8), the longest such streak in Major League history.

Carl is also remembered for his 1934 All Star game performance:   he struck out Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin consecutively.

The legendary lefty was inducted into The Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947.

We remember Anne Morrow Lindbergh (1906-2001)

The Wisdom of Anne Morrow Lindbergh
We remember Anne Morrow who was born in New Jersey on this in 1906.  She died in 2001.

In the late 1920’s, Anne Morrow met Charles Lindbergh in Mexico City.   Her father, Dwight Morrow, was the US Ambassador to Mexico at the time.

At the time, Anne was a college student and Charles touring the world after his historic flight to Paris.

Anne's life was never the same after meeting Charles.  They were married in 1929.

Anne was a very accomplished writer and woman, as you can see by checking out any of her books.   She was also the mother of 6, including their first son who was kidnapped and found dead in 1932.

June 22, 1941: Joe DiMaggio reached # 35

Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak remains an unbreakable ...
Joe DiMaggio went 2-for-5 and took the streak to 35 games.

By now, the whole country was into the streak.  It was the top story in the sports sheets from coast to coast.

June 21, 1940: Future President Nixon married Patricia Ryan

nixonandwife
On this day in 1940, future President Richard Nixon married future First Lady Patricia Ryan.

Nixon entered politics in 1946 and won a congressional seat.   He quickly jumped to the US Senate in 1950.

In 1952, General Eisenhower selected Senator Nixon to be his running mate.    As you probably know, the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket won big in 1952 and 1956.

VP Nixon lost in 1960.   He came back to win in 1968 and was reelected in 1972.  (He carried 49 states and 61% of the popular vote.)

Pat was with him all the way, from election night victory speeches to resignation in 1974.

Mrs. Nixon died in 1993 and President Nixon in 1994.

"RN" is a wonderful presidential memoir.

A couple of CD boxes to look back at The Bee Gees' career

Back in 2010, The Bee Gees celebrated their 50th anniversary, i,e. an amazing professional career that began in 1960 in Australia.

Two special CD box sets were released to remember their big hits and songwriting skills.

According to Billboard, it is a great way to remember such a special anniversary:
""Mythology" is a four-disc box set curated and produced by surviving Bee Gees Barry and Robin Gibb that will dedicate one disc each to the three brothers in the group, including the late Maurice Gibb, and one to their late younger brother Andy Gibb.

Maurice's wife and three children chose the tracks for his disc, while Andy's daughter Peta chose the 19 songs for his section of the package.
Barry Gibb notes that the 81 selections represent "pretty much our personal favorites," and Robin and Maurice's discs will each feature solo tracks as well as Bee Gees songs.

Barry's disc, meanwhile, is loaded up with hits such as "Jive Talkin'," "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," "Spirits (Having Flown)," "More Than a Woman" an "Tragedy."

The accompanying booklet includes family photos and tributes from Elton John, Brian Wilson, Graham Nash, George Martin and Robert Stigwood, the Bee Gees' longtime manager and label boss.

Coming out the same day is "The Ultimate Bee Gees: The 50th Anniversary Collection," a more modest two-disc, 39-track set that closes with a live medley of songs the trio wrote for others -- including "Islands in the Stream," "Heartbreaker," "Guilty," "Immortality" and the theme song for "Grease."

A deluxe edition of "The Ultimate Bee Gees" will come with a DVD featuring videos and TV appearances, many unreleased, from throughout the group's career."
It should be fun!
