We remember Berry Gordy who was born in Detroit on this day in 1929.    In the 1960's, he started Motown and became one of the most important figures in the music business.     Motown was the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Jimmy Ruffin, the Contours, the Four Tops, Gladys Knight & the Pips, the Commodores, the Velvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5 and a few more.

On this day in 2007, a suicide bomber in Pakistan reminded us that the world is a very nasty place when Benazir Bhutto was assassinated.  It happened 12 days before the Iowa Caucus of 2008.  It was a reminder of the terrorism threat that we continue to face.

Happy # 52 Ivan Rodriguez

We say happy birthday to Ivan Rodriguez who was born in Puerto Rico in 1971.

As I recall, Ivan Rodriguez broke with the Rangers in 1991 on the road in Chicago.  It was the start of an amazing career that took him to the Hall of Fame in 2017.

What was the reason that we remember him after all of those years?

Was it 2844 hits or a .296 career batting average?   or catching 2,427 games?  311 HR & 1,332 RBI?

The answer is his electric arm or his ability to kill a rally by picking of a runner at second or first.    Evan Grant remembers:
The first time Ivan Rodriguez threw the baseball to second base for a member of the Texas Rangers organization, it traveled at 93 mph. The first time he threw it to the base in a major league game, it reached the base before poor, unsuspecting baserunner Joey Cora even started his slide.
A legend was quickly born.
Over time, Ivan not just picked off runners.    He also forced runners to cut down their leads thus making a double play a little easier or keeping many from reaching third on a single.       It changed the game as any manager on the other side will tell you.

It was amazing for many of us watching on TV as well.     We would watch the game expecting Rodriguez to pick off runners.

Congratulations Ivan!

We remember the great Joe DiMaggio (1914-99)

The great Joe DiMaggio was born in San Francisco on this day in 1914.    He died in 1999.

We've posted a lot about his 56 game hitting streak.   Of course, Joe was more than the streak.   He won MVP's and led the Yankees to several World Series titles.    He was the best player in the best team in baseball.

DiMaggio retired after the 1951 season:   a .325 average, 361 HR, 1,537 RBI in 1,736 games.

In this book, you will learn that Joe was very quiet and shy but he could hit.

Happy # 72 Bucky Dent

Russell Earl O'Dey was born in Florida on this day in 1951.   He ended up as Bucky Dent.

In 1973, Dent broke with the Chicago White Sox.   He hit .260 over 4 seasons as Chicago's shortstop.

From 1977 to '82, he was with the Yankees and that's where he hit one of the most famous HR's in New York-Boston history.    It happened in the 1-game 1978 playoff to determine the AL East champion.

Overall, he played 12 seasons and hit .247.    However, it was that swing at Fenway Park that made him a big hero for the Yankees and forever hated in Boston.

Bucky Dent was a part of the 1978 New York Yankees, one of the most amazing championship teams ever.

1967: The Beatles, "Hello Goodbye" and many Thanksgivings ago!

The Beatles released the "Magical Mystery Tour" album just in time for Christmas 1967.

It was the soundtrack of a British TV show. However, the BBC special was not shown in the US. (You can buy a video copy!)

Side A was the soundtrack music.

Side B was a compilation of 1967 singles.

"Hello Goodbye", their new single and one of their most popular songs ever recorded by the group, was presented to the country on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Sunday night after Thanksgiving.    It was released as a 45 prior to the LP.  Eventually, it hit # 1 the last week of 1967.

Tersi Agra Bendiburg: A “Cubana” from Dixie who tells stories!

The Cuban American story is diverse.

Speaking of that, we chatted this week in 2013 with Tersi Agra Bendiburg, a "Cubana" who grew up in Georgia.

Her family story is similar to mine, and perhaps yours:
"Tersi had vivid memories from her childhood in post-revolution Cuba.  She remembers soldiers walking through her house, taking inventory of everything her family owned.  A year later, when they were to leave the country with nothing --not even her parents' wedding rings, the soldiers returned to re-inventory all the contents of the house.  She also remembers her father hiding a young man in their home  (who had been shot by soldiers) until he could be passed along safely.
At age, ten, Tersi’s family moved to Mexico City where they stayed with a distant relative while her parents applied for political asylum in the United States.  That Christmas was the first time Carmen, age 3, had ever seen Christmas lights because religious celebrations had been halted after the revolution in Cuba.
It was a wonderland.  On the Dia de los Reyes, Three Kings Day, Tersi wrote to the kings to let them know Tersi and her family were no longer in Cuba, but were, instead, in Mexico City so they would know where to bring presents.  Her parents were so worried that Tersi had written a letter and they had no money to buy her a present.  It was then that she spoke with a relative from Decatur, Georgia who told Tersi that the kings had left presents for her and Carmen in Decatur, and that in the future she should direct her letters to Santa Claus because the kings said the coffee in America was too weak for men from the east and the icy streets were too much of a challenge for the camels.  Sure enough, when they arrived in Decatur, both girls had presents waiting for them.
In Decatur, the Agra family was sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Decatur.  They never needed welfare since they had a little furnished apartment and Mr. Agra began work almost immediately.  Tersi attended Oakhurst Elementary where she had the famous spinach incident, and many other adventures.
That first Halloween in the United States Tersi ran home with a pillowcase full of candy.  She dumped it out and said, “You just say trick-or-treat and they give you candy!”
“What a country!”  Her father exclaimed."
Yes, what a country indeed!

Today, Tersi tells children the wonderful stories of Latin America and others.

What a wonderful lady!   Thanks to Fernando Hernandez for the introduction!

We spoke with Tersi on Friday's show and learned that she was born in Florida, Camaguey or not too far from my mom's hometown of Ciego de Avila!   As my mother loves to say:  "Que mundo mas chiquito"!

Holiday podcast: Cuban Americans and our first Thanksgiving in the US

Happy # 83 to the great Luis Tiant

We say happy birthday to the great Tiant.

Luis Tiant was born in Marianao, Cuba on this day in 1940. His father was Luis Eleuterio Tiant, who pitched professionally in the old Negro Leagues in the US as well as in Mexico.

Tiant made his debut in 1964 with Cleveland: 10-4, 9 complete games, 3 shutouts and a 2.83 ERA. A few years later, Luis led the AL in 1968 with a 1.60 ERA! By the late 1960’s, El Tiante was one of the best pitchers in baseball. Suddenly, he suffered a series of arm injuries in 1970-71, was released and passed up by several teams who thought that he was finished.

Everything changed when the Red Sox gave him a chance in 1972: 15 wins and a AL leading 1.91 ERA. Tiant won 81 games over the next 4 seasons and became the darling of Fenway Park

We remember Tiant and the 1975 post-season. He shut down the A’s in game 1 of the ALCS, beat the Reds in games 1 and 4 of the World Series. And his aforementioned father had a chance to watch him pitch. It was a wonderful post season for father and son.

Luis Tiant retired with 229 wins, a 3.30 ERA and 189 complete games. In my opinion, he should be in The Hall of Fame. Let’s hope that he goes in the next time around.

We say happy birthday to Ken Griffey, perhaps the best player of our generation.  He was born in Pennsylvania on this day in 1969.

Ken broke with Seattle in 1989 at age 19.   He was awesome in the 1990's winning 3 HR titles and several seasons with 140-plus RBI's.

Injuries caught up with him in Cincinnati and we never saw the offensive numbers that he put up in Seattle.

Griffey retired with 630 HR & 1,836 RBI.    He was also an amazing center fielder!

President Abraham Lincoln's letter to Lydia Bixby

Image result for mrs bixby civil war images
On this day in 1864, it is believed that President Lincoln wrote a letter to Lydia Bixby, mother of five men who had been killed in the Civil War.

It expressed condolences to Mrs. Bixby on the death of her five sons.

Historians are not sure about the letter.   It may have been written by John Jay, his secretary.  Nevertheless, it became famous in "Saving Private Ryan", a war film from 1998.

Happy # 78 to Rick Monday

Image result for rick monday images

We say happy birthday to Rick Monday, a pretty good outfielder who played for the A's, Cubs and Dodgers.   He was born in Arkansas on this day in 1945.

Monday's best years were with the Cubs (1972-76) when he hit 106 HRs and was a very tough out.   As a Dodger, he hit a 9th inning HR to beat Montreal in the 1981 NLCS.

Nevertheless, Rick's greatest baseball moment had nothing to do with hits or home runs.

It happened in 1976.

Between innings, Monday took his position in center field and was playing catch with a teammate.    He saw a couple of guys trying to burn the flag, ran and grabbed it before they could light the match.    The two idiots were arrested and Monday gave the flag to one of the security guards.

It was before cable, although the game may have been on WGN Chicago.   Anyway, I remember reading about it the next day and catching a quick bit on the evening news.

We salute Rick Monday for saving the flag and a good baseball career.
