1970: Happy anniversary Barry & Linda Gibb

Today, we say happy birthday to Barry Gibb, one of our very favorite songwriters and performers of the pop/rock era.    Barry was born in 1946.

We add that Barry and Linda were also married on this day in 1970.   Happy anniversary to them!

Barry, and his younger brothers (Robin & Maurice), composed and recorded some of the greatest songs of the last 40 years! The Bee Gees sold over 200 million records during their remarkable musical career.

We remember Rico Carty. (1939-2024)

We remember Ricardo Adolfo Jacobo Carty who was born in 1939 in San Pedro de Marcoris in The Dominican Republic.  He died in 2024.

We know him as Rico Carty who broke with the Milwaukee Braves in 1963.   A year later, Rico hit .330 with 22 HR & 88 RBI.   It was good enough to come in second to Richie Allen in the 1964 NL Rookie of the Year vote.

Rico had a lot of injuries but did win the 1970 NL batting title with a .366 average, 25 HR & 101 RBI.    He spent much of the 1970's as a DH with Oakland, Cleveland and Texas.

Carty retired with a .299 average, 204 HR & 890 RBI.  We can only wonder what his numbers would have looked like without the injuries.

Happy # 68 Gloria Estefan

We say happy birthday to Gloria María Milagrosa Fajardo García who was born in Cuba in 1957.   We know her as Gloria Estefan.    She and her husband Emilio founded The Miami Sound Machine and the rest is music history.

September 1, 1963: Curt Simmons the last pitcher to steal home!

On this day in 1963, Curt Simmons stole home, or the last pitcher to do so.  He dashed home in a squeeze play aborted at the last second.  Nevertheless, Simmons was safe.

Wouldn't you love to see a video replay of that steal?  Wonder if they have one somewhere?

Overall, he won 193, lost 183 with a very good 3.54 career ERA.  He also completed 163 games.  He started 2 games in the 1964 World Series.

1983: Remembering the day that the USSR shot down a Korean plane full of civilians

It was a shocker but it did happen many years ago:

"On September 1, 1983, Korean Airlines (KAL) flight 007 was on the last leg of a flight from New York City to Seoul, with a stopover in Anchorage, Alaska. 

As it approached its final destination, the plane began to veer far off its normal course. 

In just a short time, the plane flew into Russian airspace and crossed over the Kamchatka Peninsula, where some top-secret Soviet military installations were known to be located. 

The Soviets sent two fighters to intercept the plane. 

According to tapes of the conversations between the fighter pilots and Soviet ground control, the fighters quickly located the KAL flight and tried to make contact with the passenger jet. Failing to receive a response, one of the fighters fired a heat-seeking missile. 

KAL 007 was hit and plummeted into the Sea of Japan. All 269 people on board were killed."

The KAL 007 incident was a brutal attack.  It may have also been the beginning of the collapse of the USSR.  Gorbachev came in 2 years later and realized quickly that the USSR needed a lot more than "perestroika".
