The coming Democratic implosion

Image result for crazy democrats cartoons
The Cowboys won’t play in the 2019 Super Bowl.  The Rangers are not quite ready for another post season run.
Nevertheless, here is a prediction that I am very confident about.
Someone said that Doug Schoen, former Clinton advisor and Fox News contributor, told Nancy Pelosi to rein in congresswoman-elect Alejandria Ocasio-Cortez.  Isn’t that like telling LeBron James to shut up and play basketball?   How do you stop AOC from talking when every news outlet wants to invite her to the show?
The complete and total implosion of the Democrats, especially the majority in the House, will be the story of 2019.  It may not be covered that way by CNN and MSNBC, but the towers will start falling soon.
We already see cracks in the so called “women’s march,” a phony parade that should have been called “The march of the anti-Trump women.”
We hear this:
Organizers of a Women’s March rally slated for Northern California next month have canceled the event, saying they were concerned that participants would have been “overwhelmingly white.”
In a news release, organizers for the march in Eureka — about 270 miles north of San Francisco — said Friday the “decision was made after many conversations between local social-change organizers and supporters of the march.”
“Up to this point, the participants have been overwhelmingly white, lacking representation from several perspectives in our community,” the news release continued.
Too white?
Is that crazy or what?  Isn’t the country 72% white — or at least it was the last time I checked the population figures.
We will see the implosion over two issues: health care and the mad impulse to get Trump.
On health care, the Democrats are deeply divided between the socialized medicine crowd and a realistic wing that knows we don’t have the money to do it.  Many of this “realist wing” was elected in competitive districts and have a tough reelection waiting for them in 2020.
On “getting Trump,” they will find that impeachment is about “high crimes and misdemeanors,” not defeating Hillary Clinton or appointing conservative judges.
By the fall of 2019, the cracks will be very evident on those two issues and a few others.
The good news is that all of this craziness will convince Michael Bloomberg to run as an independent and that will reelect President Trump in a three-way race.  Bloomberg will be the Teddy Roosevelt of 1912 or Ross Perot of 1992 and President Trump will win 400 Electoral Votes.
So there is one prediction for 2019.

Cuban baseball before it became another tool of the state

Image result for pedro ramos baseball images

As we hear Senator Rubio call on President Trump to reject the new MLB proposal with the Castro regime, we remember that professional baseball began in Cuba this month in 1878.
This is what Senator Rubio said
“Legality of recent agreement between MLB & Cuban Baseball Federation rests on Obama era ruling that federation not controlled by Cuban govt. This is not just factually incorrect it is a farce & I am working to get it overruled as soon as possible,” he tweeted.
Cuban Baseball Federation not controlled by the communist regime?  What were they thinking during the Obama administration?  Everything in Cuba, and specially baseball, is run by the state.
Back to history, the first professional game was between Habana and Almendares, the two teams that would be great rivals until Castro dissolved the league after the 1960-61 season.
The league had four teams in the 1950s: Habana, Almendares, Marianao, and Cienfuegos.
It was great and passionate baseball.
My parents tell me stories of how they used to pick up the games on radio in the interior of Cuba: Ciego De Avila for my mom and Sagua La Grande for my father.
The good news is that they were huge baseball fans.
The bad news is that my mom was a fan of Habana and my father Almendares.  That’s like Yankees versus Red Sox!  In my parents’ case, baseball opposites indeed attracted: they got married, and three more baseball fans came into the world.
Along the way, many major-leaguers played winter ball in Cuba, from Willie Mays to Brooks Robinson.  It was a great stop for young players looking to crack the major line-up the next season.
Havana was also a AAA franchise, the Havana Sugar Kings in the Cincinnati organization.  Havana played in the International League with other teams in Montreal and Toronto.
We remember Cuban baseball before it became a tool of the communist regime.

My mother remembers “Sears” in Cuba

Image result for sears havana cuba images
In recent days, we’ve heard about Sears’ financial problems.  In fact, I understand that a new investor may have bought a little more time:    “Sears wins reprieve from liquidation as Chairman Lampert makes last-minute $4.4 billion bid on bankrupt company.”
Let’s hope for the best, specially for the employees who may lose their jobs.
I spoke with my mother today and got a report about that Sears store in La Habana.  It turns out that my mother bought many items there, specially appliances and clothing.  She said that the store was very popular because it treated customers very well.

Cuba singing the ’60th anniversary’ blues

Image result for diaz canel images
In a few days. appointed Presidente Miguel Diaz-Canel will oversee the 60th anniversary of what they call “la revolucion”.
Historians will note that this is the first time that a non-Castro will deliver the big speech.  On the other hand, economists will tell you that the regime has little to show or boast about.
In other words, 60 years of “revolucion” have been great for Castro, Inc. and the party elite who send their wives to shop in Montreal or Mexico City.
The rest of Cuba lives in a different reality, or a “Special Period” that never stops.
For those not familiar with Cuba, the regime calls it a “special period” any time there’s unusual economic adversity.   The first “special period” was in the 1970s, then again in the 1990s when the USSR collapsed.  Unfortunately for Cubans, the “special periods” don’t stop!   It’s one after another!
This is the latest from the Cuban economy, according to the Miami Herald:
Cuba’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by slightly more than 1 percent in 2018 but the growth “still does not help the people like what we need,” Díaz-Canel told the National Assembly at year’s end. The government predicted a 1.5 percent GDP growth in 2019, but its figures are not comparable to the rest of the world because Cuba includes spending on health, education and social services.
“Cuba’s productive machinery does not totally collapse, but it also doesn’t create economic progress in the last 30 years,” economist Pavel Vidal wrote in an article published on the digital site, Cuba Posible.
The island has still not recovered from the withering economic crisis in the 1990s known as the Special Period, Vidal added, “but it must be acknowledged that it is a system that has proven to be effective at managing the crisis and avoiding economic collapse, just as it has been ‘effective’ at limiting private initiative, innovation and increases in productivity.
“It is a system that holds the record for the lowest levels of investment in Latin America,” he added.
Díaz-Canel’s recent visits to Russia, China, Vietnam and other Asian countries — with stops in the United Kingdom and France — also did not bring the expected benefits. For 2019, the confirmed foreign investments will account for barely 6.2 percent of all planned investment in the country.
So Presidente Diaz-Canel is having trouble selling Cuba to foreign  investors? Wonder why?
Diaz-Canel faces a difficult challenge. You can’t reform Cuba without admitting that the whole system is a failure. You can’t improve the lives of Cubans without dumping the system.
My guess is that the lack of “foreign investment enthusiasm” in Cuba is a sign that most countries know that the end is coming.
Another “aniversario” comes and the band will play the usual “revolutionary” tunes about standing up to “el imperialiasmo” — the way they refer to the U.S.
Based on what they tell me, most Cubans are not paying attention at all.
How much longer can this madness go on? I’ve been wrong before, but we are down to the end.

Happy # 73: Marianne Faithfull

Like a few other boys in school, I thought that  Marianne Faithful was really cool.  We remember her as the very pretty British young woman who hung around with Mick Jagger.

Over the years, I lost track of Marianne, in large part because she stopped singing and her relationship with Mick Jagger did not end well.

This is "As tears go by", a great song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones.

Vlad in Caracas!

Image result for putin and maduro images
We know two things about Vladimir Putin and Nicolas Maduro.  Putin loves to navigate in choppy waters and stick it to the U.S.  Maduro is desperately looking for a “sugar daddy”.
We learned that Russia is active down in Venezuela, to say the least:
In exchange for modest loans and bailouts over the past decade, Russia now owns significant parts of at least five oil fields in Venezuela, which holds the world’s largest reserves, along with 30 years’ worth of future output from two Caribbean natural-gas fields.
Venezuela also has signed over 49.9 percent of Citgo, its wholly owned company in the United States — including three Gulf Coast refineries and a countrywide web of pipelines — as collateral to Russia’s state-owned Rosneft oil behemoth for a reported $1.5 billion in desperately needed cash.
Russian advisers are inside the Venezuelan government, helping direct the course of President Nicolás Maduro’s attempts to bring his failing government back from bankruptcy. They helped orchestrate this year’s introduction of a new digital currency, the “Petro,” to keep oil payments flowing while avoiding U.S. sanctions on the country’s dollar transactions.
Venezuela’s still-formidable defense force, once an exclusively U.S. client, is now equipped with Russian guns, tanks and planes, financed with prepaid oil deliveries to Russian clients. Maduro scoffed last year at President Trump’s public threat to use the U.S. military to bring him down, saying Venezuela, with Russian help, had turned itself into a defensive “fortress.”
When will see Russians walking around Caracas or enjoying the beaches as they did in circa 1961-Cuba?  As my parents used to tell me, the big joke in Cuba back then was about the super “white skin colors” of the new visitors. Cubans were asking each other whether anybody in Russia ever got a suntan.
What’s Putin up to?  What military advantage is there in placing bombers in Venezuela?  Wouldn’t they be taken out within minutes in the event of a crisis?
What’s Maduro up to?  I spoke with several of my local Venezuelan friends and they don’t see much upside for Maduro.
First, it’s going to take a lot of cash to bail out Venezuela and I’m not sure that Putin has it or is that generous.
Second, Venezuelans are already furious with the Cuban presence.  What makes you think that they are going to love their new Russian suitors?   At least, they can argue with the Cubans and tell them where to go in “expletive deleted” Spanish.
Third, what about the legal implications of Citgo used as collateral?  Are there investor lawsuits in the future?
Again, my friends in Venezuela are hoping that this is the opportunity for President Trump to intervene.  I don’t think that will happen but it depends of what Putin’s intentions are.
Putin in Caracas?  Something to keep an eye on.

Happy # 72 to Bill Lee, a.k.a. "The Spaceman"

The eccentric but very good lefty Bill Lee was born in Burbank, CA, on this day in 1946.

As a pitcher, he was a rare left hander who could pitch in Fenway Park.

He pitched most of his career with Boston and finished with Montreal:  119 wins, 3.72 ERA and 72 complete games.

Lee's pitching style was to kill you with a variety of "junk pitches" that had hitters speaking to themselves on the way back to the dugouts.

Off the field, Lee was also "The Spaceman" because of all his famous quotes.   He wasn't Yogi Berra but he had a few:

"I would change policy, bring back natural grass and nickel beer.
Baseball is the belly-button of our society.
Straighten out baseball, and you straighten out the rest of the world."

My biggest memory is game 7 of the 1975 World Series.   He threw one of those junk pitches to Tony Perez and it was the 3-run HR that put Cincinnati back in the game.

He was fun to watch on and off the field.    A baseball character when it was just fun to be a character:

So the Democrats now object to the Knights of Columbus?

Image result for knights of columbus images

The silliness of Democrats grows by the day.
Now, a couple of Democrat Senators object to a Trump appointment because of his association to the Knights of Columbus.
Let’s check the story:
In a series of questions sent to Buescher, Hirono asked whether his membership in the Knights of Columbus would prevent him from hearing cases “fairly and impartially” and, if confirmed, whether he would end his membership in the organization.
“The Knights of Columbus has taken a number of extreme positions,” Hirono said in the questionnaire. “For example, it was reportedly one of the top contributors to California’s Proposition 8 campaign to ban same-sex marriage.”
Harris meantime, in her questions to the nominee, called the Knights of Columbus “an all-male society” and asked the Nebraska lawyer if he was aware that the group was anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage when he joined…
“The Knights of Columbus does not have the authority to take personal political positions on behalf of all of its approximately two million members,” Buescher wrote in reply to the queries. “If confirmed, I will apply all provisions of the Code of Conduct for United States Judges regarding recusal and disqualification.”
Prominent Republicans and religious leaders backed Buescher in the face of the questions.
As a member of the KoC, I wonder what charitable cause do the senators want us to shut down?  We do a lot more than speak against abortion or same-sex marriage.  The two lady senators should come to our charitable activities.
This is really another attack on Catholics.  The attacks on Buescher are ridiculous.
Like me, and millions of others, Mr. Buescher joined the KoC because he is a Catholic man who wanted to be around others with whom he shares values.
Are these two Democratic senators disqualifying every person who opposes Roe as extreme?  Does that apply to Senator Bob Casey, a pro-life Democrat from Pennsylvania?   Or President Carter, who has spoken against abortion?    By that standard, half of the country, according to polls, would be rejected to any appointment to the federal bench.
I’ve argued over the years that Roe was a terrible opinion.  Once again, we see how Roe has poisoned our political debate by demonizing differences.
Here is my advice to Senators Harris & Hirono:   Call for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution and involve the Congress and state legislatures.  Let U.S. voters decide whether or not abortion should be legal.
Of course, the two lady senators don’t want that.  They just want another opportunity to raise money on the backs of the so called a “woman’s right to choose”, a right not afforded to the girls aborted.

# 60 as bad as the other 59…..

Down in Cuba, “lo mismo de siempre”!    “Mas miseria y mas mentiras” or my mother’s favorite description of the regime that destroyed the island that she was born in.
As appointed head of state Diaz-Canel gets ready for the 60th anniversary of what they call “la revolucion”, the regime has little to show for it.
In other words, 60 years of “revolucion” have been great for Castro, Inc. and the party elite who send their wives shopping to Montreal or Mexico City.

Roy White was born in Los Angeles on this day in 1943.    He played his entire career with the Yankees and earned the name "Mr. Consistent".

Roy broke with New York in 1965 and played in some of the worst Yankee teams ever.   Nevertheless, he was a steady player who played lots of games, good glove in left field and decent hitting:   .271 batting average, a very good .360 on-base-pct, and 1,803 hits in 1,881 games!

Between 1969 and 1973, he walked 439 times making him a perfect # 2 hitter ahead of Thurman Munson, Bobby Murcer and later Lou Piniella.

Roy got to play with the Yankees in the 1976-78 World Series.   He retired after the 1979 season.

I remember Roy White as a really good guy:

‘Me too’ on the verge of making a mockery of itself

Image result for i hate political correctness images

First, it was “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” and all of the silliness related to that.  We’ve been singing that song for 50 years, and no one got angry.  Suddenly, the man in the story is trying to rape the woman.  Really?  I think some of the people offended by that song need to find someone to stay warm with during these wintry nights.
Second, it’s this story by Brian Flood and Santa Claus chatting with your kids:
WashPost gender and family issues reporter Samantha Schmidt penned the feature headlined, “Should crying children sit on Santa’s lap for photos?  Here’s why some parents are saying no.”
The story appeared in the Social Issues section of the paper’s website.
Schmidt opened the piece by painting a picture of a two-year-old girl who was reluctant to sit on Santa’s lap during a recent trip to the mall – which frustrated the toddler’s mother.  Schmidt asked, “If her daughter was crying and resisting a photo on Santa’s lap, should she make her go through with it?”
The reporter notes that a “photo with Santa is still a childhood rite of passage for many Americans,” but some parents have “begun questioning the way the culture approaches photos with Santa amid the #MeToo movement and a national conversation over how to teach young children about consent and physical boundaries.”
Okay.  Where do we start with this?  How did the nation that put a man on the Moon and defeated Nazism and Communism end up like this?
Some of my favorite memories of the season are the visits to Santa Claus.  In fact, I often share them with my sons thanks to my iPhone.
Yes, our sons often cried when they sat with Santa Claus.  It had nothing to do with anything other than a kid was a being a kid.
We are turning into a silly nation, and that’s not good for a superpower.  Our enemies are watching us and can’t be impressed with what they are seeing.
