Spain goes left -- and probably off the rails

Image result for spain map cartoons

We learned that the socialists won in Spain, but it won't be easy to put a government together, as we see in this report:
Spain’s socialist prime minister says he will consider talks to form a new government only with parties that respect the constitution and promote social justice.
Pedro Sánchez declared his party the winner in Sunday’s general election, a ballot in which the far-right made inroads for the first time since Spain returned to democratic rule.
Sánchez hinted at a preference for a left-wing governing alliance but his stress on the constitution also sent a warning to Catalan separatists even though he may need their support to be elected by Parliament’s lower house to a new term as prime minister.
Translation: Spain is a mess.

The socialists got the most votes but it translates to 123 of 350 seats.  It takes 176 to have a majority and nobody is within sight of that number.
What happens now?  The socialists will have to persuade 53 other members to form a government.

It may happen if PODEMOS, the other left party with 57 seats, joins forces with the socialists.  At the same time, these two socialist parties are not as friendly as you may think.

The biggest loser was the conservative Partido Popular. They got smacked and down to 66 seats.  The biggest winner was VOX, a far-right party that made its debut with 24 seats.

In reality, the biggest loser was Spain.  The socialists have nothing to say other than just exploit the bad economy and tell people what they want to hear.  It won't get better for a while if at all!

Last, but not least, aren't you glad that we have an Electoral College, i.e. no multi-party elections that result in chaos as we see in Spain the morning after?

No more Vietnams and a bit of wisdom from President Nixon

It was many years ago that North Vietnamese marched into Saigon in the spring of 1975.   Their victory was followed by concentration camps, political prisons and the death of thousands of pro-US supporters.

In other words, we let them down. We walked away and let a superior North Vietnamese army overrun our friends.

President Nixon wrote a wonderful book in '85 called "No more Vietnams".   It was a review of the war and the mistakes made along the way.  It should be read by everyone, specially the left that looked the other way when the communists murdered thousands in Vietnam and Cambodia.

It's a great book:

April 30, 1789: George Washington became the first President of the US

On this day in 1789, George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the US.

How do you recommend a book about President Washington?   You can't.   My suggestion is that you read one from time to time.   He was an amazing man who generated tremendous loyalty among the men who served under him.

How Duke Ellington crashed the Iron Curtain

Image result for duke ellington images
In the early 1960s, my family was in Cuba.  We would often hear the news from the Spanish and English editions of The Voice of America.
I don’t think most Americans ever understood just how significant the VOA was.  It was the only source of clean news in Spanish or English.  For example, my parents listened to President Kennedy’s Missile Crisis speech and later his funeral over the radio.
Duke Ellington was born in 1899 in Washington, D.C.  He became one of the legendary jazz figures of music history.
In the communist world, his version of “Take the A-train” was the closest to a hymn of freedom.
Every night, the opening notes of that wonderful song went over the short wave signals heard in Moscow, in Prague, and down in Cuba.  It was Willis Conover and his jazz show:
For more than 40 years, Willis Conover’s long-running “Jazz Hour” introduced millions of people in Europe and the former Soviet Union to American jazz.
He produced jazz concerts at the White House, the Newport Jazz Festival, and for movies and television.  He was the voice of jazz around the world.
Back here, few people knew Conover.  Over the Berlin Wall, beyond the Iron Curtain, and elsewhere, his voice and those jazz tunes brought U.S. music to people hungry for a little freedom.
So we remember Duke Ellington one more time.  He was one of the best.  I cannot help but remember listening to “Take the A-train” and all that jazz in Cuba.
As my father said many years later, Conover brought down communism all by himself.  Probably not, but he did bring a lot of happiness and Duke Ellington to a lot of people.

1945: The BBC and Hitler is dead

According to reports, Hitler was shocked when he got reports that Mussolini had been executed in Italy.    Mussolini’s body, along with Clara Petacci, was put on display for Italians.
He did not want the same ending.
On this day in 1945, he was reported dead by the BBC.  Later, we learned that it was a suicide and that his ashes were allegedly found along Eva Braun, his wife.
The European war ended a few weeks later when Germany surrendered.    (Of course, the Pacific side of the war went on until Japan surrendered in September 1945)

We remember Bobby Vee (1943-2016)

Image result for bobby vee images

We remember Robert Thomas Velline who was born in Fargo, South Dakota on this day in 1943.

We known him as Bobby Vee, one of the most popular pop vocalists of the early 1960's.

He put 30 songs in the Billboard Top 100 including several in the Top 10:  “Take Good Care of My Baby” # 1, “Devil or Angel” “Rubber Ball” “More Than I Can Say”, “Run to Him”, “The Night Has a Thousand eyes”, and “Come Back When You Grow Up”.

As I understand, he was one of the first artists to use what we now call a video to promote a song.

Bobby Vee died in 2016.

April 30, 1961: Willie Mays hit 4 home runs against the Braves

Image result for willie mays 4 home runs images
As far as I’m concerned, Willie Mays is the most complete player in baseball history.   He was the ultimate 5-tool player.   He could do everything well.  He also stayed free of injuries, unlike Mickey Mantle who battled bad knees for his entire career with the Yankees.

Willie Mays had many big games in his glorious career, specially April 30, 1961.
Mays hit 4 home runs at the old County Stadium in Milwaukee.   He went 4 for 5 with 8 RBIs.
The Giants beat the Braves, 14-4.

Impeachment ain’t going nowhere

Image result for impeachment cartoons
Impeachment is going nowhere like that Dylan song recorded by The Byrds:
I don’t care how many letters they sent
The morning came
The morning went
Pack up your money
Pick up your tent
You ain’t goin’ nowhere
The public is not buying it as you can see here: ABC/WaPo Poll: Support For Impeachment Drops To 37%
It makes sense to me because voters understand what impeachment means:
First, it will freeze the U.S. House and nothing will get done about the border chaos or health care.  The Democrats seeking reelection in competitive districts next year can not afford that.  They need to go back and say that they passed something rather than just investigate President Trump; and,
Second, it will be very difficult to write articles of impeachment without a crime or to get a conviction in the U.S. Senate.
Will the angry left force the House Democrats to start impeachment proceedings?  I don’t know, but they will make a lot of noise.   In the end, impeachment ain’t going nowhere.

Winchester '73 is still a great movie

What's the test of a good movie?   In my opinion, a great movie is one that you can watch years later and still enjoy.   Or one where you pick up a few new things that you missed the first time.

"Winchester '73" is such a movie.  It stars Jimmy Stewart.   He is not "George Bailey" or the idealistic senator who goes to Washington.    He is a rough guy in this film.

It is the story of that famous rifle in the hands of several men.

Intense?  Very intense!

You can get a copy here!

Remembering "Respect" by Aretha Franklin

Image result for aretha franklin respect images
"Respect" was released on this day in 1967 and hit # 1 by mid-June.

Over time, "Respect" became one of the most popular records of the 1960s and a frequent addition to movie soundtracks.

The story of "Respect" is rather interesting.  It was ranked # 5 in Rolling Stone's Top 500 all time songs.

"Respect" was written by Otis Redding, another one of my favorite performers.

We remember Duke Ellington (1899-1974)

Image result for duke ellington images

We remember Duke Ellington who was born in Washington DC on this day in 1899.    He died in 1974.

Duke was a jazz giant.   However, I first heard of him many years ago when my father used to listen to The Voice of America in Cuba.

Duke’s “Take the A train” was the intro-music for Willis Conover’s jazz show broadcast to the world on short wave.
Conover broke the Iron Curtain, The Berlin Wall and came into Communist Cuba, too.

It was a very catchy tune and millions around the world came to know Duke that way.

1968: The musical "Hair" opened in Broadway

Image result for hair musical images

We remember "Hair", the musical that opened in Broadway on this day in 1968.

There were two angles to "Hair".

The first was "political" and it did nothing for me.   It still doesn't.

The second was the music and that was great, including "Aquarius/Let the sunshine in" by The Fifth Dimension, "Easy to be hard" by Three Dog Night and "Hair" by The Cowsills.

The music was good but everything else was not that important.

The world encouraged Joe Biden to run for president?

Related image
A day ago, I heard V.P. Biden say the world encouraged him to run.  We didn’t get a lot of details, but let’s take V.P. Biden at his word.
So why are all of those world leaders looking to replace President Trump?
It cannot be the U.S. economy.  After all, the latest first-quarter GDP figure is rather strong at 3.2%.  In other words, that’s a lot exports and imports going across the Atlantic.
Maybe they miss President Obama.  Didn’t he call them “free riders” over NATO?  In other words, President Trump was not telling the NATO countries anything different from what they’ve heard from many U.S. presidents.
Maybe it’s about those wonderful and universally loved Paris Climate Change Accords.
Well, let’s see what world leaders think of the Paris deal.  This is from National Post:
Barely two years ago, after weeks of intense bargaining in Paris, leaders from 195 countries announced a global agreement that once had seemed impossible.
For the first time, the nations of the world would band together to reduce humanity’s reliance on fossil fuels in an effort to hold off the most devastating effects of climate change.
“History will remember this day,” the secretary general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, said amid a backdrop of diplomats cheering and hugging.
Two years later, the euphoria of Paris is colliding with the reality of the present.
Global emissions of carbon dioxide are rising again after several years of remaining flat.
The United States, under President Donald Trump, is planning to withdraw from the Paris accord and is expected to see emissions increase by 1.8 percent this year, after a three-year string of declines.
Other countries, too, are showing signs they might fail to live up to the pledges they made in Paris.
In short, the world is off target.
Really?  The world is off target?  And they are expecting to get back on target with a President Biden?
Not so fast, world.
One of the reasons why Mr. Trump won is that he went into Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania and won blue-collar workers.  I am not sure that V.P. Biden is going to go there and tell those workers to let Europeans show them the way.
So the world wants V.P. Biden?  My guess is that he won’t be bragging about it.

2. "Loving You"
3. "All Shook up"
4. "Heartbreak Hotel"
5. "Jailhouse Rock"
6. "Love Me"
7. "Too Much"

Side two

1. "Don't Be Cruel"
2. "That's When Your Heartaches Begin"
3. "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear"
4. "Love Me Tender"
5. "Treat Me Nice"
6. "Anyway You Want Me (That's How I Will Be)"

Elvis actually released 4 volumes of this "golden records" series.    However, the first one is still one of the best rock LP's ever:

On this day in 1961, 40-year old Warren Spahn threw his second no-hitter against a very tough Giants lineup.

According to SABR, it was a very cold day and only 8, 518 fans showed up at County Stadium to watch the game.

Happy # 78 to Ann-Margaret

We say happy birthday to Ann-Margaret.

Ann-Margret Olsson was born in Sweden on this day in 1941.

She started out as a dancer and then went into movies, such as "Bye bye birdie" and "Viva Las Vegas" with Elvis.

I can't remember when I first saw her but it was memorable.  My guess is that most young men of my generation would agree with that.
