Happy # 95 Thomas Sowell!

Thomas Sowell is a national treasure.   He was born on this day in 1930 in North Carolina.

In 2007, Sewell published a masterpiece. See "Disparities" in Income & Wealth By Thomas Sowell:
"They are hot to redistribute the existing income and wealth but seem wholly unaware that how you do that today can affect how much income and wealth will be produced tomorrow. Any number of schemes for redistributing wealth have ended up redistributing poverty in a number of countries.
"Progressives" in the media and among academics and intellectuals claim to be interested in ending poverty but the production of more output is the only way to end poverty for millions of people."
That's right! Make reading Sowell one of your resolutions.

Back in 1914
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were shot to death by a Bosnian Serb nationalist during an official visit to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo.

On August 1, 1914, World War I began to take shape:
".....four days after Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, two more great European powers—Russia and Germany—declare war on each other; the same day, France orders a general mobilization.
The so-called “Great War” that ensued would be one of unprecedented destruction and loss of life, resulting in the deaths of some 20 million soldiers and civilians and the physical devastation of much of the European continent."

June 24 Famous Birthdays - #1 Person in History Born This Day

We remember June 24:

"Presidential leadership":    On this day in 1948, President Truman confronted a serious communist challenge in Berlin: The Berlin Blockade.

What President Obama should learn from President Truman

(My new American Thinker post)

On this day in 1948, President Truman was confronted with a serious challenge in Berlin:
"One of the most dramatic standoffs in the history of the Cold War begins as the Soviet Union blocks all road and rail traffic to and from West Berlin.
The blockade turned out to be a terrible diplomatic move by the Soviets, while the United States emerged from the confrontation with renewed purpose and confidence."
It was a shining moment for President Truman, who met the challenge by flying supplies to the people of West Berlin:
"The United States response came just two days after the Soviets began their blockade. A massive airlift of supplies into West Berlin was undertaken in what was to become one of the greatest logistical efforts in history. For the Soviets, the escapade quickly became a diplomatic embarrassment. Russia looked like an international bully that was trying to starve men, women, and children into submission. And the successful American airlift merely served to accentuate the technological superiority of the United States over the Soviet Union.
On May 12, 1949, the Soviets officially ended the blockade."
What can President Obama learn from this incident?

First, the bad guys will push you around until you hit them back.

Second, we were "a war weary nation" back then too.  After all, we had just concluded a brutal war and lost close to 500,000 men in the Pacific and Europe.  I doubt that there was a lot of appetite for war in 1948, especially with a bad US economy.

Third, President Truman nevertheless met the challenge, flew the supplies in and stood up the USSR.  It was a huge test and President Truman won.

In Iraq, President Obama does not have easy options but he cannot allow Iraq to collapse, especially the oil fields.  We are a "Middle East weary" country and do not want to go back to Iraq.   President Obama also has a party base that will fight military intervention all the way.

Like Pres. Truman, Pres. Obama has to see the big picture and stop ISIS from marching across the region.  It may mean air strikes or some troops on the ground.

Iraq requires presidential leadership, or the kind that we saw in saving West Berlin 66 years ago this week.

P.S.  You can listen to my show (Canto Talk).

Berlin 1948: Another sad day in the brutal history of communism

a14a75470f0c51e5605abdc3b304c379
We've reported on this blog about the violent and ugly story of communism, from the USSR to Cuba to North Korea to China.  In a nutshell, it is an ugly story where the state dominated the individual.

On this day in 1948, President Truman confronted a serious communist challenge in Berlin: The Berlin Blockade.

He responded with The Berlin Airlift or one of President Truman’s finest moments! It was a wonderful demonstration of US presidential leadership.

It also gave us the story of  “the candy bombers” or US pilots who dropped candy for the children of Berlin.

On May 12, 1949, the Soviets officially ended the blockade and the citizens of West Berlin were saved.

The good guys won in Berlin in 1948-49 and later when the wall came down in 1989.

Anne and how she met Charles in Mexico City

In the late 1920’s, Anne Morrow met Charles Lindbergh in Mexico City.   Her father, Dwight Morrow, was the US Ambassador to Mexico at the time.

Charles was touring the world after his historic flight to Paris and Anne was visiting her parents in Mexico.  So the young couple met.

Anne's life was never the same after meeting Charles.  They were married in 1929.

"Wonderful summer": The girls loved this very popular summer song!

This is Robin Ward's "Wonderful summer".

It's a classic summer love song. It is also one of the few summer songs recorded by a female vocalist.

Robin Ward is one of the greatest "one hit wonders" in pop music.

Who was Robin Ward? We don't know much about her but she did record one of the most "girly" summer songs ever!

And the girls love this song:

"I want to thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life
It was so heavenly
You meant the world to me
And anyone could see that I was so in love
I want to thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life
I never will forget That summer day we met
You were so shy and yet you stole my heart away
We strolled along the sand Walking hand in hand
Then you kissed me and I knew
That I would love you my whole life through
I want to thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life
And though it broke my heart
That day we had to part
I'll always thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life" (lyrics)

Hello summer and one of the best summer songs ever!

Hello everyone and welcome to summer!

What's the best way to say hello to summer?

I think that it's The Beach Boys. This is "Do it again", one of their many songs about summer:

Happy weekend: Enjoy the first weekend of summer!

Their name is synonymous with summer. They are The Beach Boys and this is "All Summer Long":

"Sittin in my car outside your house (sittin in my car outside your house)
member when you spilled coke all over you blouse
T-shirts, cut-offs, and a pair of thongs(t-shirts, cut-offs, and a pair of thongs)
Weve been having fun all summer long (all summer long youve been with me)
I cant see enough of you (all summer long weve both been free)
Wont be long til summer time is through(summer time is through)
Not for us now
Miniature golf and hondas in the hills (miniature golf and hondas in the hills)
When we rode the horse we got some thrills
Every now and the we hear our song (every now and the we hear our song)
Weve been having fun all summer long
Wont be long til summer time is through (summer time is through)
Not for us now
Every now and the we hear our song (every now and the we hear our song)
Weve been having fun all summer long
Weve been having fun all summer long (weve been having fun all summer long)
Weve been having fun all summer long (weve been having fun all summer long)

So let's get summer started now that Memorial Day weekend is here!

"Surfer Girl" is just right for the first sign of summer!

Welcome to what really feels like the first week of summer.  I love Beach Boys songs about summer.  They are fantastic.

As I mentioned, Brian Wilson is a superb songwriter, arranger and pop music vocalist.

What do we listen to this year for our first song of summer song?  "California Girls"? "Surfin' USA"?  "The warmth of the sun"? "Surfin' Safari"?

I will pick "Surfer girl" this year and I hope that you like it as much as I do:

"Little surfer little one Made my heart come all undone
Do you love me, do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
I have watched you on the shore Standing by the ocean's roar
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl surfer girl
We could ride the surf together
While our love would grow
In my Woody I would take you everywhere I go
So I say from me to you
I will make your dreams come true
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well Girl surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well...."

1965: Remembering the sounds of "Mr Tambourine Man"

On this day in 1965, The Byrds' unique guitars and Bob Dylan's music came together and the result was 'Mr Tambourine Man", one of the most interesting songs of the decade.

"Hey Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm goin' to
Hey Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come following' you

Take me for a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship
All my senses have been stripped
And my hands can't feel to grip
And my toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wandering'

I'm ready to go anywhere I'm ready for to fade
On to my own parade cast your dancin' spell my way
I promise to go under it

Hey Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm goin' to
