Fani ‘Stoned in Love’ with Nathan

Fani ‘Stoned in Love’ with Nathan: On a scale of 1 to 10, D.A. Fani Willis’s story is a 10 for TV but a 1 for her reputation.  It’s hard for a D.A. to be romantically involved with her lead attorney and then be so sloppy with the explanation.

Happy # 82 to Karen Grassle

We say happy birthday to Karen Grassle who was born in California on this day in 1942.

She played the role of Mrs. Caroline Ingalls and became one of our very favorite TV mothers.

"Little House" was based on a series of books written by Laura Ingalls-Wilder.  Laura was born in the late 1800's and published the books in the 1930's.

It was her family's story.  The stories were about Pa, Ma, sister Mary and Almanzo, the young man she eventually married.

I have never read the books but the TV series was fabulous.  The shows were extremely well written, serious and touched on real family issues.

It was a great show.

Happy # 83 Ron Hunt

We remember Ronald Kenneth Hunt who was born in St. Louis on this day in 1941.

Ron Hunt broke in with the Mets in 1963.  He hit .272 with 10 HR and was # 2 in the Rookie of the Year vote behind Pete Rose.  He also hit .303 in 1965 and .288 in 1966.  However, nobody remembers him for that or his .273 average or 1,479 hits over 12 seasons.

We remember Ron Hunt because he got hit by a pitch 243 times.   in 1971, he got hit 50 times with Montreal.    The next two guys on that list are Don Baylor (35) and Craig Biggio (34).

As a consequence, Hunt retired with a .368 on-base-pct.

How did he do it?   I don't know but he was very effective when you really needed a runner on base.

The World's Fair, The Beatles, The Ford Mustang and a few stories of 1964

Original photograph taken in 1964. 1964 New York World's Fair ...
Our family landed in Miami on September 4, 1964, or my brother’s birthday.  I guess that we had double reasons to celebrate that day.
A week later,  we found our way to Wisconsin where a church was kindly sponsoring our family.  We reunited with my Uncle and his family up there.
All of us learned a lot about the US that year:
The Beatles and lots of other rock groups, were on The Ed Sullivan Show.  It seem like every Sunday there was a new band, from The Beatles to The Dave Clark Five to the Animals and more.  Like most kids back then, my brother and I got our music from AM radio and then saw the groups on that memorable show;
The Ford Mustang was introduced.  I remember going with my father to a Ford dealer and admiring this wonderful new car;
We watched our first World Series on TV. The Cardinals beat the Yankees in what would be Mickey Mantle’s last post-season game.   He won game 3 with a HR and then hit his last (# 18) World Series HR in game 7.
and perphaps the biggest event of 1964: The New York World’s Fair.
It was a showcase for companies and future technology, such as a touch tone phone!
One big change is that we were a manufacturing nation in 1964. We made cars, telephones, TV’s and lots of other things.   It would have been inconceivable back then to go to the store and find nothing made in the USA.   No one would have believed that it’d be the exact opposite 50 something years later.
We don’t do that anymore and that is something to think about, specially after this pandemic that came from China.

1. "The American Political Tradition and the Men Who Made It" by Richard Hofstadter (Knopf, 1948)

2. "George Washington: Man and Monument" by Marcus Cunliffe (Little, Brown, 1958).

3. "Thomas Jefferson and the New Nation" by Merrill D. Peterson (Oxford, 1970).

4. "Lincoln" by David Herbert Donald (Simon & Schuster, 1995).

5. "Roosevelt: The Lion and the Fox" by James MacGregor Burns (Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, 1956).

We say happy birthday to John Mayberry who was born in Detroit on this day in 1949.

Mayberry broke with the Astros in 1968 but did not get to play every day until he became Kansas City's first baseman in 1972.

After that, John was one of the top power hitters in the AL with KC and Toronto:   .261 average, .360 on base pct, 255 HR and 881 RBI in 1,670 games.

Mayberry's best season was 1975:   .291, 36 HR, 106 RBI and second in the AL MVP to Fred Lynn.

We remember Luis Arroyo who was born in Puerto Rico on this day in 1927.  He died in 2016 at age 88.

Luis was a very effective major league pitcher from Puerto Rico.

In 1961, Arroyo pitched for the NY Yankees:  15-9, 2.19 ERA and 29 saves.   He also pitched in 2 World Series (1960 & 1961) and 8 seasons overall.

After baseball, Arroyo managed in Puerto Rico.

February 2008: The Dems' NAFTA charade goes on in Ohio

Image result for democrats nafta cartoons
Obama is right and wrong in Ohio.

Obama is right that Hillary Clinton has danced around NAFTA.

Once upon a time, Clinton was for the Iraq War and NAFTA.

In today's populist and leftist Dem party, Hillary Clinton's support for free trade and the war are poison.

The
China trade deal and NAFTA were two of the most significant parts of Clinton's legacy.

These trade deals were two of the biggest reasons that 4 million liberals voted for Nader in 2000! One of these voters was Michael Moore, who wrote a nasty letter to VP Gore in 2000 about the impact of these trade deals.

This weekend, Obama is hitting Clinton really hard on NAFTA.

Obama is wrong in pandering for votes by beating up NAFTA. Today, The NY Times hit Obama and Clinton hard on their attacks against NAFTA:

"In a review in 2003, the Congressional Budget Office concluded that Nafta had slightly increased growth in the United States and that any disruptive effects on employment were small. Trade opens foreign markets for American producers and gives consumers more choices, while competition spurs productivity growth at home." (It Must Be Ohio)
Once in a while, I agree with The NY Times. They are right here, at least in the paragraph about NAFTA.
