Happy # 85 Carl Yastrzemski

Carl Yastrzemski Baseball Career Highlights & Early Life | Hall of ...
We remember Carl Yastrzemski who was born in New York on this day in 1939.  He broke with Boston in 1961 and won batting titles in 1963, 1967 & 1968.

Yaz, as he was known, retired after the 1983 season and went into The Hall of Fame in 1989.

He wore # 8, played a great left field and later first base for 20 seasons.

Yaz won the Triple Crown in 1967 and led Boston to the World Series that year.  The Red Sox lost to Bob Gibson and the Cardinals in game 7.  He returned in 1975 and played a huge role in that one too.

Great player all around: 3419 hits! 452 hrs! 1845 RBIs.

August 2007: What a crazy night in Baltimore!

Back in the summer of 2007, The Texas Rangers were a major disappointment again.  To be fair, the Rangers had just made some great trades that would set up the rosters that won the AL pennants in 2010 and 2011.  Nevertheless, it was not fun to watch a team losing every night!

What do we remember about that summer of frustration? The Rangers won 30-3 in Baltimore.

You have to read it to believe it!  It was the most runs scored in 100 years! (Most runs in a game)   Last, but not least, it was fun listening to Eric Nadel and Victor Rojas call the last 3 runs!

2007 was not fun but one night in Baltimore was fun to watch.

August 22, 1938: Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers on the cover of LIFE

On this day in 1938, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers were on the cover of LIFE.

Fred & Ginger danced a lot in the 1930's or a time when The Depression was hitting most Americans very hard.

They were a major and very pleasant distraction for people at that time, as Bob Mondello wrote.

Here is a suggestion: Check out one of their many films

August 22, 1989: Where were you the night that Nolan Ryan got his 5,000th strikeout?

It happened here at the old Arlington Stadium:  Nolan Ryan got his 5,000th strikeout and set a record that will probably last forever.

Ryan followed up his historic performance with no hitters in 1990 and 1991.

“The Ryan Express” retired in 1993 and pursued business interests including turning into a very successful baseball executive.  The Rangers won the AL pennant in 2010 and 2011 and made the post-season in 2012 and 2013.

Ryan left the Rangers after the 2013 season and became a consultant with the Houston Astros, although he spends most of his time these days at the ranch with Ruth.
