McConaughey, Abbott, and Beto size up the Texas governor's office

(My new American Thinker post)

It’s final: Matthew will not run for governor of Texas. This is from The Texas Tribune:

Instead of running for office, McConaughey said he would continue to support “entrepreneurs, businesses and foundations that I believe are leaders” and “creating pathways for people to succeed in life.”

The video is worth watching. I have never seen a potential candidate announce a decision like this before. He spoke eloquently of personal responsibility. In the end, Mr. McConaughey understood the reality that he was not ready for a campaign about issues. I’m glad that he is not running.

What does it mean for Mr. O’Rourke and Governor Abbott?

The Governor is sitting on a 9 point lead in the latest poll and a huge reelection bank account. He does have a couple of challengers from the right, Allan West and Don Huffines. I don’t think that these two will keep the Governor below 50% in the primary but Mr. Huffines is spending a lot of money on commercials.

On the other hand, Mr. O’Rourke is obviously hearing about the GOP knocking on the door in South Texas. Like other Texas Democrats, Beto is hearing that the once blue border area is changing:

A lot of Democratic hopes are riding on O’Rourke this election cycle, but few may be more consequential to the party’s future in Texas than his ability to stave off a strong GOP offensive in South Texas. Emboldened by President Joe Biden’s underwhelming performance throughout the predominantly Hispanic region last year, Republicans have been pushing hard to make new inroads there, and O’Rourke faces an incumbent in Gov. Greg Abbott who has been working for years to win Hispanic voters.

But it is not just about halting the GOP’s post-2020 march in South Texas. O’Rourke, who is facing an uphill battle in the governor’s race, has ground to make up after his own less-than-stellar performance with voters there in 2018 when he ran for U.S. Senate — and turning out more Latino voters has long been key to Democratic hopes statewide.

O’Rourke has been candid about the problem. Days after the 2020 election, which cemented Republican dominance across Texas, he told supporters that the fact that the border region “has been ignored for years by the national party, and even many statewide Democratic candidates, hurt us badly.” Last week, he began his campaign for governor with a swing through the region, calling the early itinerary “very intentional” and vowing to return frequently.

Region ignored by party? Yes, there is some truth to that. It was a case of Democrats assuming that the border would always go blue. The real problem down south today is President Biden’s lawless madness at the border. It has turned loyal Democrats against a crazy policy that has nothing to do with immigration.

So the lineup is ready and let the campaigns sort of begin. The primary is ahead but the two finalists look set a month before Christmas.

Happy # 59 Bo Jackson

We remember Bo Jackson who was born on this day in 1962.    I thought that he was one of the most amazing athletes to ever play sports.

It's a shame that he did not concentrate on baseball.   He would have been a candidate for the Hall of Fame.   He hit 107 HRs & 304 RBIs in 790 games before he got hurt.

Of course, you could say the same thing about his football career.

Bo was great.   It's also unbelievable that he played his last ball game in August 1994.

If you hate it, then you need to pack up and go

(My new American Thinker post)

During the Thanksgiving recess, I learned that “the stolen land crowd” is back.  I first heard of this during the immigration marches of 2007.

As you may remember, they were claiming back then that some of the U.S. southwest was stolen land.

Where do we raise these people?   It turns out that some people, often the young, don't like Thanksgiving, either.

Let's check this out from Campus Reform:

A student publication at Lehigh University called The Brown and White published an article in early November titled “This is not our land,” calling to attention the so-called “dark history” of Thanksgiving.

“This is not our land” is an editorial from Lehigh University’s student publication, The Brown and White, that reminds readers that Americans “reside on stolen land after colonizers - many of whom could potentially be our ancestors- took advantage of the indigneous people and claimed this land as our own.”

“English settlers threatened, killed and abused the Native Americans to build a ‘New World’ that was already their own”, the article writes.

No one denies that some Europeans killed and abused Native Americans.  At the same time, it's not like the "natives" had due process, freedom of speech, or self government.  In fact, the author of the aforementioned message would have been killed on the spot if he had written anything critical of most of the "native" regimes in power at the time.

It's time to start calling on these ignorant fools to study history or just pack up and move their butts somewhere else.  We are sick and tired of paying the taxes that fund their student loans or colleges.

A few years ago, there was a popular bumper sticker about loving or leaving America.  Well, it's time for some of these people to start leaving and let us enjoy the wonder of this nation that adopted my family years ago.

It's the part about giving thanks that matters most

It's Thanksgiving and time for "the wokies" to bring up white supremacy along with more about "
the stolen land" theories.  It's also time to read a good article about what happened in Massachusetts many years ago.  I found this one by Tristan Justice really good and would recommend it a lot:

All we know about the first Thanksgiving extends to a man named Edward Winslow, an eyewitness who devoted a single paragraph to the event describing Massasoit showing up with 90 men who went out and killed five deer to cook with what the English were preparing. The two groups then feasted for three days.

In short, the Pilgrims took a moment to celebrate abundance after nearly a year of pandemic grief following the death of half their settlement alongside their native neighbors who had also suffered recent harrowing losses. Sound familiar?

Yes, it sounds familiar.  Our family didn't suffer like the Pilgrims or survive a long winter but it was not easy for my dad with two jobs, my mom counting every dollar and making ends meet somehow.  How did they keep so many balls in the air?

We used to have a lot of conversations about Thanksgiving in those early days.  It was a completely new holiday for us.  I learned the details watching turkey posters in school and hearing kids talk about Pilgrims.

My father once said something really good, and it gets better age.  He reminded me that the Pilgrims said thanks to God for surviving a rough start.  That's all you have to remember about this holiday he would repeat every time the topic came up.  Everything else, from eating turkey to whether it happened in winter or spring, is just a detail.

That's right. Thanksgiving is about giving thanks and counting your blessings.  Everything else is fun but inconsequential.

So enjoy your Thanksgiving Day and give thanks for all you have.  In our case, a new grandson who turned six months this week and a 91-year-old mom who has not lost a step after all these years.  And we live in the U.S. where we can be free in so many ways.

Go Kyle, go!

 (My new American Thinker)

We can say a couple of things about the Rittenhouse verdict.

First, the jury saved our legal system.  They followed the law, were not intimidated by the mob outside and delivered the correct verdict.   Professor Turley said it best:

"The result was hardly a surprise to many of us who watched the trial rather than the media coverage. The jury spent days carefully considering the evidence and could not find a single count that was supported beyond a reasonable doubt.

In rendering its verdict, the jury fulfilled its core function in our legal system. The jury was designed to protect an individual from becoming the grist of a criminal justice system.

Second, young Kyle can now take the next step and save the media from itself.  He needs to sue and break the back of some of the most irresponsible news coverage in years.   Here is a brief summary from Kaylee McGhee:

At least a handful of major news networks have spent the past week spreading outright lies about Rittenhouse’s case and smearing him as a “racist” and “white supremacist.”

Just yesterday, MSNBC host Tiffany Cross referred to Rittenhouseas “this little murderous white supremacist.”

A few days earlier, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough claimed Rittenhouse fired his weapon 60 times when evidence shows he fired his rifle a total of eight times. MSNBC host Joy Reid accused Rittenhouse of driving four hours with an AR-15 when Rittenhousetestified in court that he acquired the weapon at a friend’s house once he arrived in Kenosha.

CBS reporter Mark Strassman also falsely claimed Rittenhousecrossed state lines “armed for battle.”

Like Russia Russia Russia or young Sandmann's case, the media just lost it.  Too many mistakes in the same direction wouldn't you agree?

I think that today's media can be divided into two groups, the crazy bunch deeply infected with Trump Derangement Syndrome and the serious ones appalled by the aforementioned behavior.  My guess is that the serious people in the newsroom are cheering for Kyle to blow up the likes of MSNBC and CNN.

Go for it, Kyle.  You will save journalism from its vicious self-destructive behavior.

Happy # 81 Oscar Robertson

We say happy birthday to the great Oscar Robertson.    He was born in Tennessee on this day in 1940.

I got to watch him in Milwaukee when he led the Bucks to the 1970-71 NBA title.

The "Big O" broke with the Cincinnati Royals (now Sacramento Kings) in 1960-61.    He played 10 seasons there and averaged 29.3 points.

Then he went to Milwaukee where he got to play with Lew Alcindor and win a title.

Great player!

Does Beto O'Rourke think distance from Biden will help his campaign in Texas?

(My new American Thinker post)

It did not take long for Mr. O'Rourke to distance himself from President Biden — less than a week, to be exact.  This is from MSN News:

"This campaign in Texas is not going to be about Joe Biden, it's not going to be about Donald Trump, it's not going to be about anyone outside of our state," O'Rourke said. "This is going to be about the people of Texas and what the people of Texas want."

Anchor Dana Bash followed up, asking if O'Rourke would prefer that Biden did not campaign for him amid poll numbers that show just 35% of Texans support the president.

"I'm focused on Texas and on my fellow Texans," O'Rourke said. "Those are the people most important to me. There is no politician, there is no other person from outside of this state who can help change the course of this election for better or for worse."

Well, that's too cute.  Beto O'Rourke also took a shot at President Biden on the border problem — an easy shot, given how unpopular the whole thing is.  The latest poll is Abbott plus 6 over O'Rourke.

Can Beto distance himself from Beto?  I don't think so, because there is too much video, and Governor Abbott will remind us of that.

Are MSNBC advertisers watching what they are sponsoring?

 (My new American Thinker post)

My guess is that MSNBC hosts know that nobody is watching them, and that they have to make outrageous remarks to get attention.   At the same time, do the advertisers on these shows know what the hosts are saying about their fellow Americans?

Outrage is one thing, say Howard Stern.  Angry racism is something else.  Let's check out a couple of gems.

This is Tiffany Cross:

""I find these people disgusting. … I’m disgusted at what I’m seeing."

I guess that she's disgusted with a jury in Kenosha.   Does Miss Cross have some information that would have changed the verdict?   I'd love to see it.

Then there is Joy Reid.

Joy Reid argues Kyle Rittenhouse is a modern-day incarnation of slave catchers b/c both have been given "the right to inflict violence in the name of protecting property," which is "the foundation creation of" America.

She adds we need to pray for the families of those he shot.

Yes, we can pray for the families of those he shot.  Let's also say a prayer for Miss Reid, who is one angry woman.

It’s amazing that venom like this is broadcast at MSNBC.  This is awful stuff that goes beyond political partisanship.  It's the kind of hatred that would get you canceled or fired if it went in the other direction.   Can you imagine anyone on the right speaking this way about the people who burned the police station in Minneapolis?

Where are the advertisers?  Maybe they are not watching Joy Reid or Tiffany Cross either.  Few people do.

Rittenhouse vs. Biden, the next thriller

(My new American Thinker post)

Back in August 2020, then-candidate Joe Biden compared Kyle Rittenhouse to a "white supremacist."  Why?  Does Mr. Biden know Kyle personally?  The answer is no, but that's what many did in the summer of peaceful protests.

On Friday, Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty, and President Biden could not control himself again.  On the one hand, he said that we should respect the jury's decision, but then he expressed anger and concern over the verdict.

First, why is the president of the U.S. getting involved in a trial?  Yes, it received national attention, but why does the president have to say something about everything?

Second, what impact will all of this have on people who may get violent?  Won't they conclude that the trial was rigged because the president and others are concerned about it?

Third, concerned about what?  What specifically is he concerned about?  Shouldn't he explain that to the nation?  I would like to know why he is concerned.  How exactly did the system fail us?

My guess is that President Biden wanted to have it both ways, say something presidential, and then cave again to the crazy left.  Why?  That's what a weak leader does.

Kyle Rittenhouse needs a few days off, and then I hope that he goes after the president and a few others.  I like what John Kass wrote about this:

And now, what next?

What happens to corporate media — and its phony social justice warrior pundits — who savaged Rittenhouse and used race, when race had nothing to do with the case? They egged on the mob that screamed for the young man's head on a pike, and now they're still at it even after the verdict. They got their clicks out of him, and now they expect what, exactly? That we'll forget how they howled even before the first witness testified?

And what of the politicians, from President Joe Biden on down, who falsely and maliciously defamed the teenager as a "white supremacist" before trial, though no such evidence was ever presented. Biden and company fed him to the mob, stepping on justice for votes.

Can you sue a president for libel, even a witless meat puppet like The Big Guy?

I don't know if you can sue a president.  It would be nice to try to force President Biden to explain why he is concerned about the verdict.  What evidence does the president have that the jury missed?  I would like to know because the verdict reflects the wisdom of twelve people who deliberated carefully and concluded as they did.

Mr. President, you owe the country an explanation or an apology to Kyle Rittenhouse.
