Hit the road, AMLO, and don't you come back no more

 (My new American Thinker post)

President Andres Lopez-Obrador of Mexico has finally met someone that he can't fool anymore.  For the last years, the man nicknamed AMLO has pretended to be the leader of the Third World, the representative of everyone with a grievance, and the one who makes things happen.  (A lot of Mexicans would say that he is making things a lot worse, but that's for another post.)

A few months ago, President Lopez-Obrador stepped on it big time.  He got involved in Peru's politics, a sin by Mexican standards.  After all, hasn't Mexico always preached the idea that your business is your business?  Non-intervention has been the "mantra" of Mexican presidents until "El Presidente del mundo" decided that he couldn't resist sticking in his nose.

So Peru has had it with Sr. AMLO.  This is the story:

The Foreign Relations Commission of the Peruvian Congress approved on Monday the motion declaring Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador 'persona non grata.'

"With 11 votes in favor, the Foreign Relations Commission approved the motion that rejects the statements of the president of Mexico, Andres López Obrador, and declares him persona non grata," the Congress said via Twitter.

It added that the motion will now be passed to the Plenary of the Congress for a decision on the matter, in accordance with Article 68 of the Congress' Rules of Procedure.

The decision is due to AMLO's criticism of Dina Boluarte's government, the imprisonment of Pedro Castillo, as well as the recent authorization for the US Department of Defense military to enter the country.

Non-grata is sort of like "hit the road, Jack" with Peruvian sauce.

Add to this that Mr. AMLO won't give up the honorary presidency of the Pacific Club and pass it to Peru.  It's an honorary post rotated among the members but don't tell that to AMLO.  In other words, El Presidente is angry with the events in Peru, a democracy, but embraces the dictator of Cuba for all the good things happening in that island.

Cheers to Peru.  Maybe Peru can place a call to our president and show him how to deal with this first-class demagogue south of the border.

Happy # 77 Ellie Rodríguez

We remember Ellie Rodríguez who was born in Puerto Rico on this day in 1946.

Ellie broke with the Yankees in 1968 but could not compete with Thurman Munson.

A year later, he was traded to the expansion Royals and made the 1969 AL All Star team.

In 1971, he was traded to Milwaukee and had some good years:  .255 in 325 games plus another All Star team in 1972.    Ellie was traded to make room for Darrell Porter.

He retired after the 1976 season:   .245 over 775 games.    He threw out 38% of runners trying to steal.

Happy # 82 Bob Dylan

We remember Robert Zimmerman, who was born in Minnesota on this day in 1941.  We know him as Bob Dylan.
As far as I know, Dylan has been quiet lately.  He seems to be enjoying retirement and having the rest of us listen to his songs.  (By the way, May is another anniversary of Dylan’s second album, the one that included “Blowing in the wind.”)
Dylan did win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016.  Eventually, he accepted the award, but his trip to Stockholm was typical Dylan, as I recall reading in The New Yorker:
When he finally showed up in Stockholm, during an April tour stop, to receive the Nobel medal, he looked more like a cat burglar than a laureate, sneaking into the private prize hand-off through a service door, wearing a hoodie, leather jacket, and gloves.
Maybe he should have done a solo rendition of “Boots of Spanish Leather” with that outfit!  On second thought, maybe he should have asked Joan Baez to do it.
I never really liked Dylan singing his own songs, although “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Like a Rolling Stone” are obvious exceptions.  Nobody can sing those two songs like Dylan.  I love The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man,” but Dylan is Dylan.
Nevertheless, I was one of those who loved others singing Dylan songs.  Nobody did it better than Peter Paul and Mary and Joan Baez.

A word about May 24

We remember May 24:

"Hey Mr. Tambourine Man":    We remember Robert Zimmerman who was born in Minnesota on this day in 1941.  We know him as Bob Dylan.

The bridge:    It took 14 years, and sadly 27 lives, but The Brooklyn Bridge opened on this day in 1883.   It connected Brooklyn and New York City and designed by John A. Roebling.

Baseball under the lights:   The first night game was on this day in 1935:   The Reds beat the Phillies 2-1 before 25,000 happy home team fans!

Tigers '84:   Back in 1984, the Detroit Tigers got off to a 35-5 start.    That's winning 87% of your first 40 games.     The Tigers ended up with 104 wins.   They beat KC in the ALCS and defeated San Diego in 5 games in the World Series.    Great team.
