Making life difficult for the Castro regime

Image result for repression in cuba cartoons
Back on December 2014, my late father was sick and in the hospital.  We watched President Obama announce that he was reopening diplomatic relations with Cuba.  My father said something like, “This man does not understand communists.”
The story being pushed back then in the international media was that Raul Castro was a “reformist,” the Cuban version of Mikhail Gorbachev.   In other words, we were told that Raul wanted to change and turn Cuba around.
It did not long for people to realize that Raul Castro’s definition of reform was to fill Cuba with U.S. tourists spending their dollars for the benefit of the regime.
How much respect and grattitude did Raul Castro show for President Obama?  He did not greet him at the airport when Air Force One landed in Cuba.  I guess that Raul must have been watching a baseball game that afternoon.
Then came President Trump into the picture, pushing back many of President Obama’s policies.   The net result is that the Castro regime is feeling the pain, as Dr. Orlando Gutierrez-Boronat writes:
Today, the Cuban Communist regime, now bereft of its Pharaonic founder and maximum leader, is beset by economic sanctions that have affected its main sources of income and by growing internal unrest, which shows no sign of abating.
Cruise tourism from the U.S. to the island has ended, and many whose properties were unlawfully confiscated by the regime are now able to sue third-party exploiters of these properties in U.S. courts.
Raúl Castro and his brood have been designated as gross violators of human rights and sanctioned by the U.S. government as legislatures in at least three Latin American countries are today considering the unprecedented possibility of prosecuting the Castro regime for its crimes against humanity.
We can not tell you when the Castro regime will collapse.  We can tell you that President Trump’s realistic approach has made that day a lot closer.
Unlike President Obama, President Trump is treating the Cuban government like a violator of human rights and the author of an economic disaster.
Thank you, President Trump.

It’s not Republicans Democrats are afraid of; it’s other Democrats!

We learned this past week that Speaker Pelosi and most Democrats were so outraged about President Trump’s Ukraine phone call that they decided to start impeachment — more inquiry, that is!  We are still waiting for a House vote and may never get that.
So what is this fury for impeachment all about?  Is it really about the Ukraine phone call, or is it about something else?  Is someone trying to take out former V.P. Biden by targeting President Trump?
My guess is that there is another reason.  Let’s call it “Joe Crowley Syndrome” since everybody is calling everything a syndrome these days.
As Dick Morris explained, the House Democrats are not afraid of a Republican backlash in 2020.  Instead, they are scared to death of a leftist backlash:
Their actions are not the considered opinions of responsible lawmakers.
They are the desperate attempts of incumbent congressmen to avoid losing primary battles against pro-impeachment insurgents.
The ghost of Joe Crowley, defeated for re-election by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, prowls the Democratic House cloakrooms and haunts its members.
They are pushing impeachment — on whatever grounds they can find — to avoid and win primary fights.
It makes sense to me.  The new rallying cry is “don’t Crowley me,” a reference to the shocking primary loss of 2018.
The “Crowley” syndrome may also explain the timing of all of this.  In other words, most primaries will be next spring.  This is the time to discourage challengers by demonstrating that you hate Trump as much as they do.
We will never see an up-or-down vote on impeachment, or not in the near future.  My guess is that congressmen will hear from their constituents over the next few weeks that there’s no appetite for impeachment.
Again, Democrats like Representative Nadler are not afraid of losing to a GOP challenger in 2020. They are scared to death of the next AOC walking around their districts.

Every Cuban has a CDR memory

The Castro regime celebrated another anniversary of the CDR, or the infamous “Committees for the Defense of the Revolution”.
The CDRs were part of the police state in Cuba.  It was a block by block spy network.  It was neighbor “snitching” on other neighbors.
Julio Cesar Alvarez recently posted about the CDRs.  It reminded many of us just how bad it really was:
“The creation of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution in Cuba was a Machiavellian political monstrosity, conceived to reveal and suppress all forms of opposition to the nascent Communist dictatorship.
“We will establish a system of Revolutionary collective surveillance, and everyone will know who lives in the block, what those who live in the block do, what relations they had with the tyranny [of the Batista regime], where they work, who they meet, and what activities they get involved in.”    Those were the words of Fidel Castro, spoken on September 28, 1960. “
It was one of the worst chapters of the regime’s story.
We were lucky because we left.  Many were not so lucky.  They stayed and endured the repression.

Will this go down as ‘the mother of all traps’?

Image result for mouse trap cartoons
Let’s hope that President Trump starts tweeting and calling on Democrats to start the impeachment process.  It all starts with a floor vote, and no such thing is in the horizon.
The Democrats jumped the gun a bit here.  Speaker Pelosi should have have waited for the evidence.  Instead, she fell for the news story that turned out to misrepresent the phone call, as Marc Thiessen wrote:
Keep in mind, when this story broke, The Washington Postreported “two former U.S. officials” said “Trump’s interaction with the foreign leader included a ‘promise’ that was regarded as so troubling that it prompted an official in the U.S. intelligence community to file a formal whistleblower complaint.”
Well, it turns out Trump makes no “promise” anywhere in the transcript. He makes no threats, either. Indeed, it was Zelensky who raised the issue of investigating corruption, not Trump. “We wanted to drain the swamp here in our country … You are a great teacher for us and in that,” he told the president.
To be honest, I’d have preferred that President Trump had not brought up the Biden issue.  At the same time, he did not violate the law or demand anything, as so many “sources close to the investigation” reported in the media.
So where do we go from here?
President Trump should call on Democrats to begin the impeachment process, including an up-and-down vote.
Second, the Trump team should disclose the Obama-Biden chapter in recent Ukraine history.  They can start by sharing John Solomon’s post.
It won’t be pretty, but President Trump will win this one.

Venezuela: From oil to cocaine?

Over the years, I’ve heard from my Venezuelan friends about cocaine and the Maduro regime.  This is why I found this report by Sabrina Martin so interesting:
Venezuela, known for having the world’s largest oil reserves, is now also known as a cocaine-producing country after opening the doors to the Colombian guerrillas of the FARC and ELN and establishing them in its territory.
Nicolas Maduro’s regime has transformed the South American country into an “emerging power in the production and illicit processing of drugs,” according to Spain’s ABC newspaper.
Sabrina goes to explain this:
Venezuelan professor Javier Tarazona, director of the NGO FundaREDES, reported documented evidence of the presence of the FARC and ELN in at least 17 of Venezuela’s 23 states to the Colombian Attorney General’s Office.
“The worst thing is that FARC leaders like Ivan Marquez and Jesus Santrich, among others, operate from the Miraflores Palace, the seat of power in Caracas, which protects and finances them, and treats them as ministers with security escorts,” Tarazona said as he left the Colombian Attorney General’s office.
Miraflores the headquarters of operation?
What does it mean to the U.S.?
First, it shows that Maduro, Chavez’s heir, is facilitating the distribution of cocaine.  In other words, the Chavez-Maduro regime is no longer exporting ideology.  It is now distributing cocaine or making life easy for FARC.
Second, this is very bad news for Brazil, a country fighting cartels along its porous borders.  You can say the same about Colombia, a country that lived through its own battles with cartels recently.
What can we do?  I am not suggesting an invasion but harsh sanctions should continue.  It would not hurt to declare Maduro a “narco” not different than Chapo and subject to arrest here or elsewhere,

President Trump right on target about Cuba and Venezuela

Image result for trump un speech images
In case you got distracted with the Ukraine phone call controversy, President Trump spoke at the UN about Cuba and Venezuela.   This is what he said:
In his speech in New York, Trump sharply criticized the socialist policies of Maduro and his close ties to leaders in Cuba along with the practice of detaining political prisoners and reports of extrajudicial killings by death squads linked to leaders in Caracas.
“According to a recent report by the United Nation Human Rights Council, women in Venezuela stand in line for 10 hours every day waiting for food, over 15,000 people have been detained as political prisoners, modern day death squads are carrying out thousands of extrajudicial killings,” Trump said.
He added: “The dictator Maduro is a Cuban puppet, protected by Cuban bodyguards, hiding from his own people, while Cubans plunder Venezuela’s oil wealth to sustain its own corrupt communist rule.”
Home to the world’s largest oil reserves, Venezuela was for decades an economic leader in the western hemisphere and, despite a massive gap between rich and poor, was a major destination for neighboring Colombians and other Latin Americans fleeing their less prosperous and more troubled homelands.
I loved it.
Like President Reagan’s “evil empire” comment in 1983, it will be welcomed by dissidents and despised by the corrupt leaders.  It’s a clear sign that President Trump stands with them and will make life difficult for the two regimes.
I recall years ago talking to my father’s cousin, who spent 14 years in a Cuban political prison.  I asked him about the value of U.S. presidents talking about the Cuban prisoners.  He told me that it meant a lot.  At least, as he said, it reminded the men in prison that someone was thinking about them.

Have we seen this before?

A couple of weeks ago, the New York Times “broke” another story about Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh.  We learned later that the “victim” did not remember the incident.
Remember the two brothers who attacked Jussie Smollett in Chicago?  We learned later that it was a hoax.
So is anyone surprised that the “whistleblower” didn’t actually hear President Trump’s conversation with Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky?
Well, I am not surprised to hear this:
Fox News has learned that typically, multiple U.S. officials are on such calls with the president, but this would indicate the whistleblower is not one of those people.
It’s unclear if the individual read a transcript of the call, heard about it in conversation, or learned of it another way.
So how did such a person get the credibility necessary to make the accusation?
So let’s encourage the Democrats to start impeachment proceedings.  Let them bring this “whistleblower” to a hearing and confirm whether or not he heard the conversation.   It will make a great Perry Mason moment!

Paint him black and he calls for a middle class tax cut

Image result for pm trudeau cartoons
Canada’s PM Trudeau has had a tough week in the middle of a difficult reelection.  Someone released some photos of Trudeau as the man in black, face and all!
PM Justin Trudeau is trying to change the conversation by calling for a middle class tax cuts.  As my Canadian friend told me yesterday:   “Did he just figure out that we are overtaxed”?
This is from news reports up north:
In the wake of Justin Trudeau’s blackface and brownface controversy, the Liberal leader made a stop in Brampton, Ont. on Sunday to announce a tax break and cuts to cellphone bills.
“Under our plan, middle class Canadians won’t pay taxes on the first $15,000 of income they earn,” said Trudeau in his remarks.
In a news release, the Liberals claim the tax break would save the average family $585 a year. The Liberals say they will also increase the Basic Personal Amount tax credit by nearly $2,000 for Canadians earning less than $147,000 a year.
Well, so Justin does a Reagan?
PM Trudeau’s problem is that he looks like another “liberal” hypocrite, or the kinds of people who preach this and that but don’t necessarily practice it.
Also, he seems a bit immature, from his constant apologizing for the “blackface” incident to the time he dressed up in some “Bollywood” wardrobe.
It’s up to Canada to make this call.  I have no idea who will win what appears to be a close election coming up.
As for me, I love Canada but would love it more if they had a more serious person serving as Prime Minister.

Democrats may grow to regret the Hunter Biden story

Image result for hunter biden images
What do you do when unemployment is under 4% and the economy is doing well?  Well, the answer is that you desperately look for this or that to distract a population happily employed.
The latest Ukraine scandal is such a distraction but one that Democrats may grow to regret.  In other words, this may not be the story Mr. Biden wants to be explaining over the next few months.
The Hunter Biden story has been around for a while, as we see in this report from Politico:
Despite the outrage that greeted reports of the president’s actions, Biden’s immediate response was no simple matter.
His son Hunter Biden’s lucrative contracts with Ukraine — at the same time the vice president was in charge of U.S. policy toward the country raised — raised the prospect of fueling a narrative with downside political risk for Biden.
“This puts him on the ropes over having to talk about this,” said Patrick Murray, a pollster with Monmouth University.  “He certainly doesn’t want to talk about this, his family.”
That’s right!  There is no pretty way to explain how the son got lucrative contracts from the country that the father was overseeing.
It does not pass the smell test.  You cannot explain this as a coincidence.  The public will connect dots and figure it out.
What’s the Ukraine story?  I don’t know, but I’m convinced that President Trump builds a trap, and the Democrats fall right into it.

Lopez-Obrador facing a little reality south of the border

Image result for lopez obrador cartoons
In recent days, I’ve spoken with several Mexican friends and they’re all singing the same song:  How did this guy LO get elected?
Well, to be fair, he did win the election easily.  Secondly, the opposition put up some lousy candidates.  I was hoping that Antonio Meade, then the finance minister and a centrist, would win, but he put up a lousy effort.  Perhaps Meade was stuck with President Henrique Pena-Nieto’s bad ratings, which often happens when you have an unpopular incumbent. As we say up here, you can’t beat someone with nothing! Sadly, AMLO had it too easy.
Nevertheless, President AMLO, as Mexicans call him, is generating some very partisan responses.  Mexico is becoming extremely polarized, especially along socioeconomic lines.
This is an example from Victor Hugo Becerra, a contributor to Pan Am Post:
The days go by, and the confirmations are unfortunately abundant. The government of Lopez Obrador is a grand failure. It is a disappointment to many of his followers. The country will not end up in the right place if it follows the path of his administration. I hope he can change things (little, but there is still time to do so), but his attitudes and those of his collaborators do not offer much hope.
Lopez Obrador has broken practically every promise he made to come to power: He did not reduce the price of gasoline or electricity, did not fight corruption (he has become an accomplice to it), did not reduce crime or violence in the country (which remains berserk, unpunished and uncontrolled), did not fight huachicoleo (fuel theft), and continues to chase after the areas near the Mexican refineries, offered to save PEMEX (but his bad decisions bring him closer to the abyss, day by day, and with them, the country’s economy). He has not created more jobs, nor has he attracted investors.
The economy is stagnant at 0% growth compared to its potential to grow at 4% annually, suggesting that the administration has already forgotten the proposal to decentralize its dependencies away from Mexico City. Lopez Obrador promised to maintain a firm and dignified foreign policy against Donald Trump but turned the country and its government into unpresentable servants who do the dirty work of the Trump administration.
Well, I think that amigo Victor is over reaching saying that President Lopez-Obrador is doing “the dirty work” of the Trump administration.  After all, what he is doing on the Southern border with Guatemala is returning Mexico to its traditional tough policy on illegal immigration.  Also, Mexicans are not crazy about the caravans either.
Other than that, Victor is right on.
The Lopez-Obrador administration has failed to take advantage of the amazing U.S. economy.  By any historical standard, Mexico should be booming, given its traditional relationship with the U.S.  Mexico always grows when we grow, and the U.S. is growing but Mexico is not.
As for the charges of corruption, Victor raises a point that I’ve heard from many Mexican friends.  They hear that the President wants to do away with corruption, but fear that it may be all talk.
What does all this trouble south of the border mean for us?  It means that President Trump will be in a strong position the next time that the leaders talk about this or that.  In other words, LO needs Trump a lot, specially if he wants to get the Mexican economy growing again.

Even 12-year-olds want out of Venezuela

Image result for venezuela map images
A few years ago, a Cuban cyclist in the Pan American Games was competing and suddenly made a turn the other way.  What happened?  Did he get confused with the route?  No — he rushed to a foreign embassy and sought asylum.
And others have defected over the years, especially those in baseball, because they travel more often.
We learned that several Venezuelan players wanted to stay, too.  I mean 12-year old Little Leaguers:
“When I arrived in the United States I was impressed,” said outfielder Eduar Pinto, 12, who enjoyed going out to eat and playing in the game room in the team’s dorm in Williamsport.
“When the time came to return, I didn’t want to come back. I wanted to stay there.”
The young boys did go back.  I’m sure that the adults supervising the young team made sure that everyone was in the plane to Maracaibo.
Nevertheless, the boys expressed some rather incredible statements about life in Venezuela today:
“The ballplayers over there (in the U.S.) are fat, and they’re not tired,” Salcedo said, alluding to Venezuela’s growing problems stemming from malnutrition and hunger.
I guess that these young boys know what socialism really is.  Maybe they should chat with the young people who buy into the promises of Sanders and Warren.
As my late father used to say, the best way to understand socialism is to talk to someone who lives under socialism!

What did you say, Julian?

Image result for julian castro cartoons
We can fairly say that Julian Castro was singing a different tune about border security a few years ago.  This is what he said about enforcement of immigration laws back in 2013:
Nobody agrees with open borders.
Everyone agrees that we need to secure our border.”
So what happened to Julian Castro in six short years?
First, he is at 2% in the polls and desperately looking for attention.  Sadly, your “15 minutes of fame” today can happen by calling President Trump a racist or saying that he incarcerated children on the border.  It will get you an interview with Rachel Maddow who will conveniently forget to ask you about the kids that the Obama administration held in cages back then.
Second, Julian Castro is not a serious man, or maybe just an opportunist.  What he said back in a 2013 was rather sensible.  He argued for some kind of immigration reform but insisted on border security or order on the border.
Castro will fade after Iowa or New Hampshire — or maybe he will hang around until the Texas primary.  Nevertheless, he is not winning anything but could emerge as a VP choice if Senator Warren is nominated.
In the meantime, I hope some journalist will ask him about what he said in 2013.
Will the real Julian please stand up?
