We should call the "Castro-Chavez" axis in Latin America the new 'evil empire'

(My new American Thinker post)

We remember this weekend as one of President Reagan's finest hours from 1983
"Speaking to a convention of the National Association of Evangelicals in Florida on this day in 1983, President Ronald Reagan publicly refers to the Soviet Union as an evil empire for the second time in his career."
President Reagan, known as "The great communicator," understood two things rather well:

1) Presidents have the biggest microphone in the world.  They should use it to project conviction and especially what the US stands for; and,

2) People behind the Iron Curtain were listening more and more in the early 1980s because of Voice of America broadcasts.  He understood that the people in the Soviet bloc would cheer and appreciate that somebody in the West cared about them.

As we know, the old Soviet Union went out of business in 1992.  However, there is still evil in this world.

In fact, there is one big evil partnership not far from our shores.  It is the Castro-Chavez partnership that wrecked Cuba, is destroying Venezuela and causing headaches in other Latin American countries.

It's time for the president of the US to stand for freedom and march with the people of Venezuela.   What exactly are we gaining by staying neutral in this fight?  Who are we protecting?  The corrupt anti-US regime? The regime killing people?

Stand for the rule of the law and condemn what we are seeing in Venezuela, Cuba and others.

As for Castro's Cuba, shut down negotiations, or any conversations, until there are free elections in the island.

It may not be the nuclear USSR but it is just as evil.  Just ask the people of those nations.

What a great opportunity for President Obama to put the US flag on the side of people and against corrupt anti-US regimes.

Could Putin get Cuba back by bailing out the Castro regime again?

(My new American Thinker post)

According to Charles Krauthammer, President Putin of Russia sees himself in very historic and transformational terms :
"He can already see the history textbooks: Catherine the Great took Crimea, Vlad (the Great?) won it back. Not bad for a 19th-century man."
I don't know if he is "Vlad the Great" but President Putin is like the offensive coordinator who keeps throwing the long pass and scoring.  He's concluded that the other side does not have much of a pass defense.  He keeps throwing and scoring.

There is one more piece to putting the empire together.  It is Cuba, the island 90 miles away from the US and a very nice warm spot for the Russian Navy to go around the world.

How does he get Cuba back?  The answer is money and Putting has plenty of that these days.  .

First, he goes to Raul Castro and offers a lifeline. Cuba needs credit and would literally love "a sugar daddy" again.

Second, another round of Russian aid would keep the Castro brothers in power even longer.   It could replace the subsidized oil that they've been getting from Venezuela.

It would also draw the US's attention or give the Castro brothers the kind of relevance that they crave.

Third, they won't have to pay back all of those loans to Western countries.  Russia would take care of that, as it did between the Missile Crisis and the collapse of the USSR.   It's "Happy Days are here again" for the Castro dictatorship.

Again, Putin wants to put the empire back together and Castro needs a lifesaver.  It is the exactly the perfect storm that could put these two nations back together.

Yes, it is a long shot.  However, stranger things have happened.   After all, didn't Russia sign a memorandum in 1994 respecting Ukraine's borders?  Didn't we "reset" relations with Russia in 2009?

Yes, there is a "Twilight Zone" element to my post but stranger things have happened.

We love Mike Modano: Great to see the Stars # 9 jersey retired!

The Dallas Stars and Mike Modano came together when the # 9 jersey was retired on Saturday night.

Mike came here when the North Stars moved to Dallas.  He quickly became a fan favorite and the face of hockey in this area.   He turned into the greatest US-born  hockey player ever.

Still my favorite Star!
