Democrats going ‘state’s rights’ on abortion

Image result for abortion cartoons

For years, I’ve argued that states, or voters, should decide abortion.  In other words, my problem with Roe v Wade was that it took the decision away from voters!
In recent weeks, we’ve seen a surge of “blue states,” such as New York, rushing to pass their own abortion laws,.
The latest is Rhode Island, according to news reports:
Like her fellow nominally Catholic governor Andrew Cuomo, Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo, who is also nominally Catholic, supports legislation making abortions legal up until the moment of birth.
The legislation, titled “The Reproductive Health Care Act, “ states that the state shall not “restrict an individual person from terminating that individual’s pregnancy after fetal viability when necessary to preserve the health or life of that individual…”
The legislation asserts, “For purposes of this section, ‘fetal viability’ means that stage of gestation where the attending physician, taking into account the particular facts of the case, has determined that there is a reasonable likelihood of the fetus’ sustained survival outside of the womb with or without artificial support.”
The legislation repeals language in the state’s general laws saying that human life begins at conception.
Virginia is lining up, as we hear.
Where do we go from here?   As I recall, Roe v Wade was about abortion in the first 12 weeks or so said the front page story on The New York Times back in 1973.
Are the new laws in New York or the ones contemplated in New Hampshire or Virginia in violation of  Roe v Wade?  Did anyone ever say that a woman has the right to an abortion at any time of her pregnancy?  Did Roe say that?
Furthermore, does Texas, or another state, now have the right to pass a law that restricts abortion after 12 weeks?
It’s a moral and legal mess.  Maybe it’s time for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe and let the states figure it out.  It appears that some are already doing that!

Does Maduro really have the armed forces?

Image result for maduro cartoons

We hear that President Nicolas Maduro has the support of the armed forces.  But does he really?
Remember the Kremlin back in 1991?  They ordered the armed forces to put down the Yeltsin movement but they didn’t.  In other words, soldiers were not willing to fight their own people to support a corrupt and unpopular regime.
I see the same thing happening down in Venezuela.
First, Maduro has not sent a task force to arrest Interim President Juan Guaido, as we see in news reports:
More than 700 opponents of President Nicolas Maduro have been arrested during the latest push by Venezuela’s opposition to oust the socialist leader.
But there’s one anti-government activist security forces notably haven’t touched: Juan Guaido, the lawmaker who declared himself interim president in a direct challenge to Maduro’s rule.
So why not?  Why not deliver the knockout punch and put your opponent in jail?
I think that Maduro knows that such a move would provoke one of these three reactions, or all of them at once:
1) The armed forces will not arrest the man supported by the people in the streets;
2) Maduro is afraid that he will be arrested; and best of all,
3) It could bring about a military intervention or some kind of regional force made up of U.S. Marines, Brazilian troops and others.
Does Maduro really have the armed forces on his side?  He probably has the Cubans, but not much more.
Maduro needs to get out quickly —  or he will spend a long time chatting to a cellmate called Noriega in the U.S.

A new book: "Marriage and Civilization: How Monogamy Made Us Human"

Like many of you, I catch Dennis Prager's radio show whenever possible.

Some time ago, Dennis interviewed William Tucker, the author of "Marriage and civilization".   It was a great discussion about the importance of marriage through history.

I will go out and get the book:

Pope Francis: Excommunicate Governor Cuomo

Image result for governor cuomo cartoons
Pope Francis has just returned from a youth rally in Panama.  I’m glad to see the Pope there and it’s a great program to promote the faith among young people.  I have friends from our area who traveled to the event.
Let’s hope that Pope Francis has a very tough response to the new New York law on abortion. It is late term abortion and worse
I’m glad to see that the opposition is coming from many places, including Charlie Daniels:
Music icon Charlie Daniels blasted New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a Saturday tweet, asserting that a new state law that legalizes abortion up until birth threatens to make the Empire State resemble an infamous Nazi concentration camp.
“Watch the wrinkles on Cuomo’s face lengthen as the ramifications of the thousands of murders he has sanctioned come to bear on him,” Daniels, 82, tweeted. “The NY legislature has created a new Auschiwitz dedicated to the execution of a whole segment of defenseless citizens. Satan is smiling.”
I don’t know if Satan is smiling but a lot of us are shocked with the law and the celebration that followed.
Painting the town pink to celebrate late term abortion?  Is this what Roe v Wade was supposed to be about?
Pope Francis has been talking a lot about walls and climate change.  I would like for him to “excommunicate” Governor Cuomo and shame him for this outrageous law and the celebrations.

Another Democrat talking about Medicare for all and free education

Image result for democratic images
What exactly is different about Kamala Harris?  What is she offering us that makes her stand out from the others singing the same tune?
My guess is that Democrats may run into the same problem that they did with Mrs. Clinton in 2020, as Michael Graham pointed out:
Despite the fact that she’s been repeatedly referred to as “the female Obama,”  and that she formally announced her candidacy on Martin Luther King day, could it be that the most apt description of Democrat Sen. Kamala Harris in the 2020 POTUS race is… Hillary Rodham Clinton?
The comparison comes from the fact that the 54-year-old former California Attorney General appears to be running on a Clinton-esque combination of identity politics and moderate Democratic policy.
“The way Harris is likely to position herself on policy issues during the campaign — liberal as any candidate on noneconomic issues but not as liberal on economic issues as, say, Bernie Sanders — echoes Hillary Clinton’s platform in 2016,” writes Perry Bacon, Jr. at the FiveThirtyEight website.
At the same time, Sen. Harris’s embrace of identity politics is unabashed and beyond dispute.
As I’ve said, 2020 is President Trump’s to lose.  Nevertheless, a candidate like Senator Harris does not add much to Mrs. Clinton’s 232 electoral votes.
My point is that she will get every vote that went to Mrs. Clinton in 2016.  However, she needs a bit more if she wants to defeat President Trump.
Also, how will she perform under the microscope?  Has she ever debated anyone outside of California?   What about foreign policy?  What happens when she has to explain “Medicare for all”?
What about her relationship with Willie Brown?  What Democrat will bring that up in the primaries?
Yes, Senator Harris will have everyone in the national media on her side.  So did Secretary Clinton — and we know what happened on election night!

Baseball the latest casualty of Venezuelan crisis

Image result for venezuela baseball imagesFor decades, the Caribbean Series was baseball at its most passionate level.
The series was played between the professional winter league champions from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
Cuba dropped off in the 1960’s, and it was replaced by other countries.
My parents, and grandparents, told me lots of stories about these championships, from watching the games in Havana to catching them on the radio, and later TV in the 1950s.  It was like watching the Yankees and the Red Sox play a double-header every day for two weeks.
In recent years, big contracts have discouraged many major-leaguers from playing winter ball.  Nevertheless, the pressure on the local players is intense, from Minnie Minoso in pre-Castro Cuba to Ivan Rodriguez in recent years.
MLB has just advised its players to stay away from Venezuela, as we see in this report:
Major League Baseball is recommending in the “strongest terms” that players and staff not travel to Venezuela for the Caribbean Series, which is to start Feb. 2.
Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido declared he was temporarily assuming presidential powers in a bid to unseat Nicolas Maduro.
President Donald Trump this week supported Guaido’s claim to power.
Maduro called home all Venezuelan diplomats from the U.S. and closed its embassy in Washington.
MLB says in a statement Friday the commissioner’s office is “actively seeking advice on the political, legal, and safety implications of this still-developing situation, and we will inform clubs of any effects as soon as they become clear.”
MLB adds: “In the meantime, we advise club personnel in the strongest terms to immediately cease travel to Venezuela for any reason.”
MLB’s position is understandable.  Nevertheless, it’s sad to see this happen.
Once upon a time, I heard the expression that revolutions never happen during the baseball season.
Well, that was then, and this is now.  It looks as though baseball is taking a back seat to what we see in the streets of Venezuela.
Let’s hope that we can play ball next year.

‘Leaving on a jet plane’ to and from Davos

Image result for davos airport images
They came, told us that climate change was a horrific threat, then flew home on their private jets.
According to news reports, there were so many private jets that Peter, Paul & Mary’s “Leaving on a Jet Plane” became the unofficial theme song for the gathering:
Despite global warming being one of the major issues discussed at Davos every year, some 1,500 private jets are expected this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, according to an estimate from Air Charter Service, up from 1,300 last year.
“We have had bookings from as far as our operations in Hong Kong, India and the US,” Andy Christie, private jets director at ACS, said in a statement.
“No other event has the same global appeal.”
Okay — so the event has global appeal.   I can understand that.   Who wouldn’t want to go on a private jet to visit Davos?
I appreciate that everyone wants to be seen at Davos.   However, wouldn’t a little humility make all of them look less hypocritical?
They sit around and tell each other how the planet is going to pieces because you and I use fossil fuels.
Here is an idea:  Why not rent a few 747’s and come in a group next time?  Hire some horse-drawn carriages and go around town that way.  Finally, turn off the heater and bring some extra blankets.
Not these guys.  They want everybody else to sacrifice, but not them.  They make our planet cleaner by talking seriously about it or calling for Trump’s impeachment.
Wonder if they had any “breakout sessions” to talk about the Paris Climate Accords and how few countries are living up to their commitments?

Beware Cuban dinosaurs

Image result for maduro castro images
A few years ago, our three sons were into the same dinosaur craze as all the other kids at the time.  One day over dinner, I asked # 2 son in 4th grade what happened to the dinosaurs.  He responded by saying that there were hit by meteors and disappeared from history.
Right or wrong, it seems to me that the dinosaurs in the Cuban Communist Party should look at the window because something is falling on their friend Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela.
According to news reports, things are not going Maduro’s way:
Overnight, the smaller-scale protests that began on Monday began to spread, with a throng of demonstrators in Bolivar state setting alight a statue of Hugo Chávez, the leftist firebrand who established Venezuela’s socialist state and anointed Maduro as his successor before dying of cancer in 2013.
Burning Chavez?   My guess is that Hugo is happy that he did not live to see the end.
So far, the Trump administration is playing this correctly.  They are publicly supporting the opposition and calling for honest elections in Venezuela.
VP Mike Pence just released a video supporting Juan Guiado, the leader of the legislature and de facto opposition leader.
The bad news is that there may be some bloodshed ahead.  Maduro’s gang will not leave gracefully because the Chavez’ regime has been “very good to their wallets” to paraphrase Chico Escuela.
The good news is that the public is not afraid to go out and march anymore.
Over in Cuba, they have to be watching all of this with concern.  Venezuela has been Cuba’s “oil sugar daddy” for years but can’t fill the regime’s tank anymore.
Did the meteors kill the dinosaurs?  I don’t know, but whatever is falling in Venezuela appears to signal the end of the corrupt Chavez-Maduro reign.

Not exactly an ‘inclusive’ Women’s March

Related image

As I told a local TV channel, this is not a women’s march.  This is a march of women who don’t like President Trump.
Just listen to the speeches.  Did you hear any of these important details about the state of women in the U.S. today?
First, the unemployment rate is pretty good.  In fact, it’s historically good: 3.9%!
As Elaine Parker wrote:
By almost every economic measure, women are flourishing in today’s economy.
Female unemployment is currently at a 50-year low of 3.9 percent, less than half the rate it was as recently as President Obama’s second term.
This summer, the female unemployment rate reached its lowest level in 65 years.
When you consider how small the female labor force was back then, it’s safe to say it’s never been easier for a woman to find a job than it is today.
Second, red Texas is very good for female entrepreneurs.  In fact, Texas is the place for a woman to open a business.
You didn’t hear anyone saying this from the podium.  What we heard were the same sob stories about this and that.
We also didn’t hear a speech from a pro-Trump or pro-life woman.
Please don’t call it a women’s march, because a lot of women stayed home!

Ocasio-Cortez’s weird view of morality

Related image
As we celebrate another anniversary of “Roe v Wade”, or the termination of 50 million lives since 1973, we listened to Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez talk about morality and the end of the world.
First, she did her best “Churchill” and warned about the gathering storm of climate change.  In fact, AOC is warning us that the world will end in 12 years:
“Millennials and people, you know, Gen Z and all these folks that will come after us are looking up and we’re like: ‘The world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change and your biggest issue is how are we gonna pay for it?'” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Not sure what study she is referring to.  I do recall several other predictions about the world freezing, then melting and our coastlines flooded with bears swimming down the Mississippi.
Second, she raised the idea of the 70% tax.  Miss O-C has not put a proposal on the floor or published anything.  All we have our talking points about the morality of rich people commuting by helicopter and the rest of us taking crowded subways.
How is she going to pay for all of this?  It does not matter because it’s over in 12 years anyway.
As I listen to this young woman talk about morality, it reminds me that a million babies are aborted every year.  Miss O-C defends that as a “choice”.
The bad news is that we can look forward to another 12 million abortions.  The good news is that abortion will end in 12 years because “climate change” will end it all.

The NFL gave us a wonderful double helping of football

Related image

We watched two great games that went into overtime, one between the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs, the other between the Los Angeles Rams and the New Orleans Saints.
I won’t comment on the referees or overtime scoring rules.  In other words, I’d love to see both teams get a chance to handle the ball.  It was a shame that Kansas City never had a chance to respond to New England’s score.
We did have a little controversy and it had nothing to do with kneeling.
Jimmy Buffett apparently forgot that he was singing the national anthem:
The “Margaritaville” singer’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” seemed to lack melody, but was more mundane than offensive.
However, it was the conclusion of the performance that baffled the world: He deliberately and pointedly dropped his microphone.
For the record, I like Jimmy Buffett’s music.  Also, I understand picking a native son or daughter to sing the national anthem.
My problem is that the anthem is a serious song.  It should not be performed in a “pop” style.
My suggestion to the NFL commissioner is to encourage the local team to look for a soldier or high school student who can sing.
Take the “stars” out of the mix and put the focus on the song about the “free and the brave”.
