1993: Carter wins it for Toronto

Let’s turn the clock back to 1993 and remember a very happy night in Canada.   Joe Carter hit a walk off HR to win the World Series.  It was the first walk off HR since Mazeroski in 1960.
And yet it was a back to back championships for Toronto.   They beat Atlanta in 1992!

1993: Nolan Ryan’s last game

ryanfinal

What a game and I heard it on the radio.    Nolan Ryan pitched to a few Mariners, hurt his elbow and walked off the mound for the last time.   He couldn’t get out of the first inning!   He threw a 2-0 strike and he heard something pop.  And he knew it was over.
And I heard it on the radio!   Mark Holtz went down to the dugout and spoke with Ryan during the game.  It was that important of a moment.

August 4, 1993: Nolan Ryan vs Robin Ventura

Where were you the night that Robin Ventura charged Nolan Ryan?  I was playing with my young sons and listening to the Rangers' game.  Then I heard the late Mark Holtz say that Ventura was charging Ryan.  A couple of hours later, the video was all over the world.

1993: Dale Murphy retired

Dale Murphy retired on this day in 1993.
Murphy broke with the Braves at the end of 1976.    He won two NL MVP awards and was one of the best players in the game for a dozen seasons.
He stayed with the Braves until 1990.   He finished in Philadelphia for a couple of seasons and the Colorado in 1993.
His career numbers were awesome:  398 HR & 1,266 RBI.  He led the NL in HR in 1984 and 1985.
Murphy didn’t get to play with all of those great Braves’ teams of the 1990s.   He was gone by the time that the Braves were winning all of the titles.
Great player.

1993: The first World Trade Center attack

On this day in 1993, a terrorist bomb exploded in a World Trade Center parking lot in New York City.   It left a crater 60 feet wide and caused the collapse of several steel-reinforced concrete floors in the vicinity of the blast.   Six people were killed and 1,000 injured.

We remind you that this attack happened 10 years before the US invaded Iraq.

1993: Elvis US postage stamp

On this day in 1993, the US Post Office released the first Elvis 29 cents stamp.

It sold quickly and I remember the lines.

I finally got my sheet of stamps a week later.   It was a great image!

1993 AFC Wild Card game: Buffalo Bills' amazing comeback

Many of us remember this game on TV or the day that Frank Reich led the Bills to a 41-38 overtime victory over the Houston Oilers.

At one point, Buffalo was down 28-3 then came the comeback of comebacks.

Buffalo went on to win the AFC title and lose to Dallas in the Super Bowl.   The Bills were coached by Mark Levy.
