Happy # 57 to Omar Vizquel

Omar Enrique (Gonzalez) Vizquel was born in Venezuela on this day in 1967.   He was too young to watch Luis Aparicio play in the major leagues but I'm sure that he heard a lot about him growing up.    Every kid in Venezuela knows about the great Aparicio.

Omar was an outstanding shortstop.   However, let's not overlook his bat:  .272 BA, 2,877 hits, 456 doubles and a very good .336 On Base Pct.

Will he make the Hall of Fame in a couple of years?   Probably not but he will eventually.

Happy # 75 Peter Frampton

We say happy birthday Peter Frampton who was born in the UK on this day in 1950

In the summer of 1976, Peter Frampton was on top of the musical world.   His double LP "Frampton comes alive" was # 1 on Billboard USA.    It sold 6 million copies in the US and a lot more elsewhere.

Rolling Stone Magazine ranks this LP # 41 in the top 50 "live" albums.      Frankly, I'm surprised that it ranks that low considering the album's influence on radio.

It featured 3 Top 10 hits:  "Baby, I Love Your Way," "Show Me the Way" and "Do You Feel Like We Do".    The last one was 14 minutes long on the LP version!

Great LP and one of those that you should get on CD for your rock collection.

NPR makes the case for its own defunding: The NPR story gets more and more strange.  Some of us were hoping for a little reflection and maybe rebranding from a woke playlist to more bipartisan  information.   Instead, the woke circled the wagons and shot back.

1923: Babe Ruth hit 3-run homer in first game at Yankee Stadium

We remember today that Yankee Stadium opened in 1923 and Babe Ruth hit a 3-run homer.    

Who else?

We are now in the 3rd edition of Yankee Stadium.   

The first one saw the team win 24 championships, including 5 in a row from 1949 to 1953.  

The stadium was shut down after the 1974 season for renovations.    The Yankees actually played at Shea Stadium in 1975 and came back to play in a World Series in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.

The second one closed after the 2008 season.    

The third one opened in 2009 and the Yankees won the World Series.

The Yankees have a flag in each of the 3 parks, another amazing accomplishment by the top franchise in US sports history.

Happy # 60 to the Ford Mustang

We celebrate another anniversary of the 1964 Ford Mustang.   

The car was named after a World War II fighter plane. 

The Mustang sold more than 400,000 units within its first year of production, far exceeding sales expectations.

I never owned a Mustang but maybe I should go out and buy one!

1937: Daffy Duck made his debut

We say happy birthday to Daffy Duck who made his debut in 1937.    He appeared with Porky Pig in "Porky's duck hunt".   

Over the years, we loved Daffy because of a "hyperactive, at times silly, character whose madcap capers were fueled by an unpredictable personality."

We remember Olivia Hussey (1951-2024)

Back in my younger days, they released a version of "Romeo & Juliet" starring a pretty young woman named Olivia Hussey.  She was very young when she made this movie, i.e. 17 or 18.  

I learned years later that Olivia was born in Argentina on this day in 1951.  Her father was British and the mother was from Buenos Aires.   Wonder how they discussed the Falklands War in that marriage?

Olivia died in late 2024.
