History is out — but what will replace it?

Battle lines drawn over AP U.S. history - CNN
It’s getting really crazy out there, from burning bibles to referring to people who throw rocks as “peaceful protesters.”
The latest one comes from Chicago, as we see in this report:
Leaders in education, politics and other areas gathered in suburban Evanston Sunday to ask that the Illinois State Board of Education change the history curriculum at schools statewide, and temporarily halt instruction until an alternative is decided upon.
At a news conference, State Rep. LaShawn K. Ford said current history teachings lead to a racist society and overlook the contributions of women and minorities.
Before the event Sunday, Rep. Ford’s office distributed a news release “Rep. Ford Today in Evanston to Call for the Abolishment of History Classes in Illinois Schools,” in which Ford asked the ISBOE and school districts to immediately remove history curriculum and books that “unfairly communicate” history “until a suitable alternative is developed.”
Is that  Howard Zinn spinning in his grave?
So what are we going to tell our children about their country?  Who will decide what book or books address every single aspect of U.S. history?
Don’t we already have “Black History Month” that emphasizes their contributions to U.S. history?  Isn’t September “Hispanic Heritage Month”?  When are we going to teach them to read and write? Or speak correctly?
Once again, the winner of this latest madness will be “home schools” or private schools.  I can see more and more schools offering options to parents desperately looking for an alternative.
Someone needs to whisper in the Democrats’ ears that they are making parents very very angry.

Happy # 73 Rick Derringer

We say happy birthday to Rick Derringer who was born in Ohio on this day in 1947.  He became a huge rock guitarist playing with lots of bands.

Rick started with The McCoys, the classic garage band of the 1960's.  They were just a bunch of young guys playing rock music.   Rick was only 19 when they had a big hit "Hang on Sloopy", "Fever" and
"Come on let's go", originally recorded by Richie Valens.   After that, he went solo and enjoyed a lot of success, too.

1981: Leadership Reagan style and the air controllers

A few years ago, President Reagan once again demonstrated that he understood leadership and the presidency.

On this day in 1981, President Reagan "fired" 11,359 air-traffic controllers on strike.  It was a tough call but President Reagan was right.  It was also one of the first times that a leader of a democracy stood up to a public sector union and prevailed.

1957: Dick Clark and "American Bandstand"

We grew up watching "American Bandstand".    Like "The Lone Ranger", the show went from one generation to the other.

AB went national on this day in 1957 and the rest is TV and music history.  AB was on every Saturday at noon central time or something like that .

AB's success was due to the music and the kids who danced every week.   Dick Clark understood that the audience wanted to hear the music and see the couples dancing.  And that's why he was so successful.

1967: "Heroes and Villains" by The Beach Boys on this radio this week

It started with lots of surfing and dancing music.

Over time, Brian Wilson's genius blossomed in the LP "Pet sounds", continued with "Good vibrations" and then came "Heroes and villains".

To say the least, it was an amazing time to listen to The Beach Boys.

We remember Rick Huxley who was born in the UK on this day in 1940. He died in 2013 at age 72.

Looking back, The Dave Clark Fiive were one of the biggest rock groups of what was called "The British invasion".

I was a big fan and loved their sound.
