Trump hits the brakes on Cuba

On December 2014, President Obama decided to change our approach toward Cuba. He set in motion the events that led to the opening of a U.S. embassy in Havana.
Like everything Obama, it was done unilaterally or by going around Congress on the embargo in place since the 1960's. To make a long story short, the U.S. embargo imposed certain guidelines to reestablish relations in Cuba. The Helms-Burton law made it even more specific after Cuba shot down U.S. citizens in 1996.
This week, President Trump used his pen to erase Obama’s pen. This is CNBC:
Americans wanting to visit Cuba will have to go as part of organized tour groups run by U.S. companies. A representative of the sponsoring group must accompany the travelers.
The Treasury Department is exempting trips booked before Trump announced his Cuba policy on June 16.
The State Department is also publishing a list of dozens of hotels, shops and other businesses that it says are linked to Cuba’s military. Americans are banned from doing business with them — making travel even more complicated.
Well done.
President Obama’s idea was to flood the island with U.S. visitors and bet that such encounters would bring about change.
In theory, it may work. In Castro’s Cuba, it didn’t because everything is owned by the state or what is commonly known as Castro Inc.
If a U.S. tourist goes to Cuba, he stays in a state hotel, tours the island in a state bus, eats at a state restaurant and all of this puts money in Castro Inc. rather than the Cuban economy.
In sum, tourism to Cuba has turned into a subsidy of the Castro regime and not much more.
Communism in Cuba destroyed the healthy pre-Castro economy that saw thousands of Cubans own businesses, such as hotels, restaurants, tour bus companies and others.
My own family is an example of that. My father was a banker in a Cuban-owned bank. My uncles were successful professionals. We had several other small business owners in our large family. There is no such thing in Cuba today — another reason why the economy cannot produce anything or sustain itself without somebody bailing out the regime.
So enforce the embargo. The law offers Cuba a path to having normal relations with the U.S.

A post from 2008: No babies in Spain but the apes now have rights!

A post from 2008:

To be honest, I had to look twice to make sure that I was reading what I was reading.

"Spain's parliament voiced its support on Wednesday for the rights of great apes to life and freedom in what will apparently be the first time any national legislature has called for such rights for non-humans.
Parliament's environmental committee approved resolutions urging Spain to comply with the Great Apes Project, devised by scientists and philosophers who say our closest genetic relatives deserve rights hitherto limited to humans.
"This is a historic day in the struggle for animal rights and in defense of our evolutionary comrades, which will doubtless go down in the history of humanity," said Pedro Pozas, Spanish director of the Great Apes Project."
A historic struggle for animal rights? Our evolutionary comrades? Are these people crazy or what?

In the meantime, Spain has one of the lowest birth rates in the world. (1.32 per woman)

What does that mean? It means that Spain's population will shrink dramatically. In other words, there won't be any Spaniards in the future.

So let the apes take over. Spain will now be the land of apes.

This is insane. This is crazy.

This is Spain today under the able leadership of left wing socialists!

P.S. A bit later, George Weigel wrote this book:

Post from 2008: Kissinger's message and Europeans madly in love with Obama!

A post from 2008:

Europe, a.k.a. the continent in denial, is in love with Obama, too.

What is Obama, or for that matter any American, going to do for Europe? Let's get serious!

What can a US leader do for a continent that can't create jobs, have babies or defend itself?

Obama is just the latest distraction from a reality that Europeans don't want to face. We are living in such a moment in Europe.

Former Sec. of State Kissinger has something profound for the Europeans. They should listen to what he is saying in this great interview ('Europeans Hide Behind the Unpopularity of President Bush'):

On Iraq and the war on terror:

"Some Europeans do not want to understand that this is not an American problem alone. The consequences of such an outcome would be at least as serious for Europe as for the Americans."
On NATO and Afghanistan:
"I think it is obvious that the United States cannot permanently do all the fighting for Western interests by itself.

So, two conclusions are possible: Either there are no Western interests in the region and we don't fight.

Or there are vital Western interests in the region and we have to fight.

That means we need more German and NATO troops in Afghanistan.

What I am not comfortable with is that some NATO members send troops primarily for non-combat missions.

That cannot be a healthy situation in the long term."
On NATO, again:
"In the long run, we cannot have two categories of members in the NATO alliance: those that are willing to fight and others that are trying to be members à la carte. That cannot work for long."
In less than a year, Pres. Bush will be back in Texas. The Europeans won't be able to blame him for everything wrong in the Atlantic alliance.

Frankly, the Europeans need to get their act together.

The US public is getting tired of defending people who do not want to defend themselves.

Obama can't fix any of that. Only the Europeans can fix their problems!

In the meantime, we will watch Europeans do the Obama and pretend that he can save them from their self afflicted malaise.

A post from 2008: Romney's speech was great at CPAC

A post from 2008:

Mitt Romney's CPAC speech was memorable. This is one of those that you should save in your archives. Here are some of my favorite lines:
"I am convinced that unless America changes course, we will become the France of the 21st century—still a great nation, but no longer the leader of the world, no longer the superpower."
On values, he said:

"The 1960’s welfare programs created a culture of poverty.

Some think we won that battle when we reformed welfare, but the liberals haven’t given up.
At every turn, they try to substitute government largesse for individual responsibility.

They fight to strip work requirements from welfare, to put more people on Medicaid, and to remove more and more people from having to pay any income tax whatsoever.

Dependency is death to initiative, risk-taking and opportunity.

Dependency is a culture-killing drug—we have got to fight it like the poison it is!
The attack on faith and religion is no less relentless.

And tolerance for pornography—even celebration of it—and sexual promiscuity, combined with the twisted incentives of government welfare programs have led to today’s grim realities:

68% of African American children are born out-of-wedlock, 45% of Hispanic children, and 25% of White children.

How much harder it is for these children to succeed in school—and in life.
A nation built on the principles of the founding fathers cannot long stand when its children are raised without fathers in the home. The development of a child is enhanced by having a mother and father. Such a family is the ideal for the future of the child and for the strength of a nation."
Speaking of our allies, he said this:
"Europe is facing a demographic disaster. That is the inevitable product of weakened faith in the Creator, failed families, disrespect for the sanctity of human life and eroded morality.

Some reason that culture is merely an accessory to America’s vitality; we know that it is the source of our strength.

And we are not dissuaded by the snickers and knowing glances when we stand up for family values, and morality, and culture. We will always be honored to stand on principle and to stand for principle."
This is one of the best speeches of this campaign.

Let's hope that Sen. McCain selects Gov. Romney as VP this fall. It would be a great ticket!
