Where did all the kids go?

 (My new American Thinker post)

Over the weekend, I saw this article about public schools and parents.

Maybe it's really parents vs. schools.

This is from the Associated Press:

Families opting for homeschooling, private schools and other options sent enrollment down sharply in the first full school year of the pandemic, and generally it has been slow to recover.

In Houston, the largest district in Texas, enrollment tumbled by more than 22,000 to around 183,000 in fall 2021 and only about half of those students have returned. The district was shielded from making cuts in the first two years of the pandemic by what are known as “hold harmless” provisions, but those protections are expected to end. Superintendent Millard House has asked departments to cut $60 million from next year’s budget.

So where did the kids go?  They are staying away from public schools.

The article does point out that enrollment is up in Florida, and down in California, in further confirmation of where the moving vans are going.

The pandemic is clearly a factor but it's more complicated than that.

A Dallas friend well connected with Catholic schools told me that the phone does not stop ringing at the office.  Why?  Parents are calling wondering how they can move their kid from public schools.   Most of them are not even Catholic.  As my friend said, one mother said on the phone that she wants to send her kids to a school where boys and girls go to different bathrooms and no one makes it a constitutional issue.

Home schooling is booming too or another way that parents are voting against the system.

What's next?  The parents will show up to vote and demand "school choice" from their state legislatures.

Moral of the story:  Don't pick a fight with mom and dad because they vote and pay the taxes.

A word about May 3

A few memories and thoughts about May 3:

"Those were the days my friend":   Mary Hopkin, the beautiful young woman from Wales who sang so many wonderful songs, was born on this day in 1950.   Mary is best known for "Those were the days", now available in a digital format.

"Godfather of soul":  We remember James Brown who was born on this day in 1933.  He left us a huge legacy of songs and albums.

"The book that everybody had to read in school":  Niccolo Machiavelli was born in Florence on this day in 1469.   We remember him for "The Prince", or the book that he published in 1532 when he was briefly jailed.

"Time flies":   We say happy birthday to Francesco Stephen Castelluccio who was born in New Jersey on this day in 1934.   We know him as Frankie Valli.

"Everybody's favorite host":    We remember the great Robert Osborne, who was born on this day in 1932.    He was the face of TCM, the great movie channel that so many of us love.    He passed away in 2017.

Once in a while, we have a little free time to catch an old movie.    Not long ago, they were showing “55 days at Peking”.   This is a story based in China during The Boxer Rebellion.

Happy # 72 Mary Hopkin

Mary Hopkin, the beautiful young woman from Wales who sang so many wonderful songs, was born on this day in 1950.

Mary is best known for "Those were the days", now available in a digital format.

This is specially good for those who grew up with the scratchy 45!

It was one of the first records released on Apple Records, the company started by The Beatles.

Mary was a beautiful 18-year old woman when she recorded this tune. It quickly became an international best seller.

I loved her voice. Let me confess that I loved her elegant look too! She looked and sounded great!

Celebrating Seniors – Frankie Valli Turns 82 | 50+ World
We say happy birthday to Francesco Stephen Castelluccio who was born in New Jersey on this day in 1934.  We know him as Frankie Valli.

I became a huge fan of The Four Seasons and will always have a special place in my heart for their great songs like "Rag doll".
