Tuesday's video: Biden and the 25th and more stories

Don't be surprised if there is a Walz on the ticket

The best Lennon-McCartney song?

They say that a good song gets better and better with age....does it?

What was the best of all of the Lennon-McCartney tunes?

Over time, I've grown to love "In my life".

It was released in "Rubber Soul", my favorite of all of The Beatles' albums.

This is such a nice song, specially as we get a little older and remember all of the places that "have changed".

According to "songfacts":
"The lyrics about friends refer to Stu Sutcliffe, an early Beatle and great friend of John's who died in 1962, and another friend named Pete Shotton.

Lennon also thought of his Aunt Mimi and wife Cynthia, as well as other friends."
John & Paul do some great vocals:

"There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed

Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more..."

Vida Rochelle Blue, Jr. was born on this day in 1949 in Louisiana.   He died in 2023.

He broke with the A's in 1969 at age 19 and then became the pitching story of 1971:   24-8, a 1.82 ERA, 8 shutouts & 301 Ks.   It earned him a Cy Young Award & MVP!

Overall, he won 209 with 143 complete games and pitched with the A's in the postseason, 1971-75.

I saw Vida shutout the Orioles in game 3 of the 1974 ALCS, a dominating 2-hit shutout!   He beat Jim Palmer, 1-0 with Sal Bando hitting a home run for the only run of the game.

We remember Leo Durocher (1905-1991)

The legendary Leo Durocher was born on this day in 1905.

Leo broke with the Yankees in 1925 but did not start playing on a regular basis until 1928 when he hit .270 in 102 games.

Durocher had a pretty good career with the Yankees, Reds, Cardinals and Dodgers.   He was primarily a short stop and finished with a .247 career average.

As a manager, Durocher won 2,008 games, 3 NL Pennants and the World Series with the 1954 Giants.

In the spring of 1947, Leo and the Brooklyn Dodgers took their spring training camp to Havana.  It was a real treat for Cuban fans to catch major league exhibition baseball games.

We remember him as a very colorful figure on and off the field.

1965: The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" was # 1 this week

Satisfaction-us.jpg
Mick Jagger got a big gift for his 22nd birthday in 1965, or the # 1 song on Billboard USA.    It was also the song that turned The Rolling Stones into huge rock superstars.

"Satisfaction" was released on the "Out of our heads" LP.    It was also included in various compilations LP's, specially "The singles".

It is not my favorite song by The Rolling Stones.  Frankly, I'd rather hear "Jumpin' Jack Flash".     Nevertheless, "Satisfaction" was huge.

We say happy birthday to the US Post Office.    It was created on this day in 1775 when the Congress established it and named Benjamin Franklin the first Postmaster General.

A word about The Rolling Stones!

Image is everything: Was marketing key to success of Rolling ...
The Beatles were the greatest rock band.  Unfortunately, they broke up in 1970 and we've been playing old stuff ever since.

McCartney had a great solo career. Lennon did OK and was killed just as he was coming back to the charts.  Harrison and Starr had limited solo careers.

The Rolling Stones are a different story. They are still going.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts are still in the band. Bill Wyman retired a couple of years ago. Brian Jones died in 1969. He was replaced by Ron Wood and Mick Taylor.

Bottom line: The Rolling Stones are the longest running band of the rock era.

"Brief encounter" is intense but very nice

A few years ago, I caught a portion of Noel Coward's "Brief encounter" on TCM.   It is a movie from 1945.

It is the story of a married woman who meets a doctor at a train station.  It's a chance meeting and they begin to see each other.    She is Celia Johnson and he is Trevor Howard.

I had no idea that the movie is considered a romantic classic.

Also, the movie's soundtrack is fabulous, or Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto exquisitely dropped in at different moments of the story.

Very nice movie.     What happened to the married woman and the doctor?   Watch the movie and find out!

July 20, 1969: It was great to be alive on the day that Apollo 11 landed on the moon!

It was July 20, 1969 or many years ago today.

Like most families, we sat around the TV and watched Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon.

I can remember much of it, from Walter Cronkite's countdown to the lunar landing to President Nixon's speech to the astronauts.

We remember Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and congratulate the crew and everyone down here who made this amazing mission possible.

Wonder whatever happened to that US flag and landmark that we left up in the moon?

Wonder what the next visitors will say about us?

Watching Apollo 11 and wondering if our family was watching it in Cuba

It was many years ago.  I keep asking where did 51 years go?  As I recently checked, “In the year 2525” by Zager & Evans was # 1 on Billboard USA that week.  Talk about a “one hit wonder” and a song that no one will admit to buying today.
Like most families, we sat around the TV and watched Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon.
At one point, my father commented that Cubans in the island were probably not permitted to watch this historical event.
My mother then added something colorful:  “Ese HP de Fidel no le quiere dar merito a los americanos que llegaron primero que los rusos.”   Let me give you a PG translation: something like that SOB Fidel is not going to admit that the Americans got there before the Russians.
I can remember much of it, from Walter Cronkite’s countdown to the lunar landing to President Nixon’s speech to the astronauts. And the departure from the moon!
We remember Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins and congratulate the crew and everyone down here who made this amazing mission possible.  It was an amazing week from launch to the successful return to Earth.
Wonder whatever happened to that U.S. flag and landmark that we left up in the moon?  I’m hoping that a future mission will answer that question.
Furthermore, I was very lucky to be living in the U.S. where I could watch the whole thing.  I learned later that my family in Cuba did not get to see it.

We could use another Joe DiMaggio streak

(My American Thinker post)

On this day in 1941, the streak ended in Cleveland.  Joe DiMaggio's amazing 56-game hitting streak was stopped when third baseman Ken Keltner made two terrific back-handed stops.

During the streak, DiMaggio hit .408 (91 for 223), with 15 HR & 55 RBI.  No one has come close except Pete Rose 44 in 1978 and Paul Molitor 39 in 1987.

What makes the streak so amazing is how often DiMaggio got only one hit in the streak.  Also, he did not sit out double-headers, as many players do.  He got hits off Hall of Famers Lefty Grove and Bob Feller (twice), plus Venezuelan Alex Carrasquel.  Alex won 50 games but made one of the most important lists in baseball history.

The streak was a symbol of consistency, as Lawrence Baldassaro wrote at The Society for Baseball Research:

On May 15, the day the streak began, the Yankees were in fourth place, and DiMaggio had batted a lowly .194 over the previous 20 games.

On June 17, DiMaggio broke the Yankee hitting-streak record of 29 games, set by Roger Peckinpaugh in 1919 and equaled by Earle Combs in 1931.

As DiMaggio's streak continued to grow it gradually became a national obsession. Day after day, across the country, the question was: "Did he get one today?"

In its July 14 issue, Time magazine wrote: "Ever since it became apparent that the big Italian from San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf was approaching a record that had eluded Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and other great batsmen, Big Joe's hits have been the biggest news in U.S. sport. Radio programs were interrupted for DiMaggio bulletins."

On June 29, in the seventh inning of the second game of a doubleheader in Washington, DiMaggio hit a single to pass George Sisler's 41-game streak set in 1922, commonly referred to as the "modern record" to distinguish it from Wee Willie Keeler's 44-game streak, the "all-time record" set in 1897.

The New York Times reported on June 30 that the fans "roared thunderous acclaim" to "one of the greatest players baseball has ever known," while his teammates 'to a man,' were as excited as schoolboys over the feat."

On July 2, DiMaggio broke Keeler's record with a fifth-inning home run off Red Sox pitcher Dick Newsome.

Fifteen days later, on July 17, the streak ended in Cleveland's Municipal Stadium in front of 67,468 fans — at that time the largest crowd ever to see a night game — when Indians third baseman Ken Keltner robbed DiMaggio of hits with two spectacular plays.

Over the course of the streak the Yankees moved from fourth place, 5 1/2 games back, to first, seven games ahead of Cleveland. DiMaggio went on to hit safely in his next 16 games, and the Yankees went on to win the pennant and then beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series.

One of the fascinating sidelights of the streak is that in his 223 times at bat, DiMaggio struck out only five times. In fact, he struck out only 13 times in the entire season. The late Harvard paleontologist and essayist Stephen Jay Gould, noting the streak, called it "the most extraordinary thing that ever happened in American sports."

DiMaggio batted .357 for the 1941 season and led the league in runs batted in and total bases. He won his second MVP Award, receiving 15 first-place votes, while Ted Williams, who hit .406 and led the league in home runs, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and runs, received eight.

The streak had another impact.  It kept us busy during that summer of war in Europe.  Not long after getting that MVP award, Pearl Harbor happened, and Joltin Joe was wearing a different uniform.

"Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?"  He didn't go anywhere, especially for me, who grew up hearing about DiMaggio from my late father and read about the streak on the anniversary.  My father was 15 in 1941 and checked the living room radio in Cuba every night to hear about the streak.

Who knew that this guy could sing like this? I didn't know! I learned later that Ames had performed professionally with his brothers over the years.

In the spring of 1967, Ed Ames shook up the charts with "My cup runneth over", one of the most remarkable performances by a male vocalist ever!

It was popular enough to compete with the heavyweights in the charts: The Beatles' "Penny Lane", The Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday" and The Turtles' "Happy together".

It was a great song.

Happy # 84 Ringo Starr

Happy birthday to Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey) who turns a year older today.  Ringo is one of the two surviving members of what we used to call “The Fab Four“.
Ringo will probably go down in history as one of the luckiest men ever born.  Talk about “being in the right place at the right time” or winning the biggest lottery of all time.
In the fall of 1962, The Beatles, and new producer George Martin, walked into a studio to record their first single.  Martin settled on “Love me do,” a Lennon-McCartney tune, and it did reach the top 20 in the UK.  It did not chart in the US.  The B-side was “P.S. I love you”, one of their most underrated songs!
The rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say, is that Martin replaced drummer Pete Best, an original member of the band and lifelong friend from Liverpool.  Martin replaced Pete with Ringo.
Pete Best was out.  Ringo Starr was in.   Pete ended up with 9 to 5 job and sadly no one remembers his birthday.  Ringo has a big mansion and everyone remembers his birthday.
Within a year of the roster change, the Beatles had two # 1 songs in the UK:  “Please please me” and “She loves you”.   Eighteen months later, Ringo and his pals were on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and their songs dominated the U.S. charts.
In a few months, Ringo went from being a Liverpool drummer to playing behind John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
He had a great sense of humor and the media loved him.  Ringo had critical roles in the Beatles’ movies, such as his “ring” in “Help” and that funny walk to “This Boy: Ringo’s theme,” in “A Hard Day’s Night”.
Ringo did a couple of “lead vocals”, such as the # 1 song: “Yellow Submarine”.  However, his greatest contribution was being a professional drummer, exactly what George Martin had in mind back then.
We remember Ringo’s birthday and I hope that he is doing well.

Spring and summer of 1968 with The Rascals

The Rascals had a nice run of big hits.   Some of their hits are real classics, like "Good lovin'" and the ballad "Groovin'".

They were Eddie Brigati (vocals), Felix Cavaliere (keyboard, vocals), Gene Cornish (guitar) and Dino Danelli (drums).  Felix and Eddie wrote most of the hits.  Dino looked a lot like Paul McCartney, i.e. look at the picture.

In the spring of 1968, The Rascals released "A Beautiful morning" and it was another big hit.  It was upbeat and fun to sing along.    Their next big hit was "People gotta to be free", a song that was released the summer that Soviet tanks invaded Czechoslovakia.

I just can't believe that it was so many years ago!
