We remember Vida Blue (1949-2023)
He broke with the A's in 1969 at age 19 and then became the pitching story of 1971: 24-8, a 1.82 ERA, 8 shutouts & 301 Ks. It earned him a Cy Young Award & MVP!
Overall, he won 209 with 143 complete games and pitched with the A's in the postseason, 1971-75.
I saw Vida shutout the Orioles in game 3 of the 1974 ALCS, a dominating 2-hit shutout! He beat Jim Palmer, 1-0 with Sal Bando hitting a home run for the only run of the game.

We remember Leo Durocher (1905-1991)

The legendary Leo Durocher was born on this day in 1905.
Leo broke with the Yankees in 1925 but did not start playing on a regular basis until 1928 when he hit .270 in 102 games.
Durocher had a pretty good career with the Yankees, Reds, Cardinals and Dodgers. He was primarily a short stop and finished with a .247 career average.
As a manager, Durocher won 2,008 games, 3 NL Pennants and the World Series with the 1954 Giants.
In the spring of 1947, Leo and the Brooklyn Dodgers took their spring training camp to Havana. It was a real treat for Cuban fans to catch major league exhibition baseball games.
We remember him as a very colorful figure on and off the field.

1965: The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" was # 1 this week

"Satisfaction" was released on the "Out of our heads" LP. It was also included in various compilations LP's, specially "The singles".
It is not my favorite song by The Rolling Stones. Frankly, I'd rather hear "Jumpin' Jack Flash". Nevertheless, "Satisfaction" was huge.

A word about The Rolling Stones!

McCartney had a great solo career. Lennon did OK and was killed just as he was coming back to the charts. Harrison and Starr had limited solo careers.
The Rolling Stones are a different story. They are still going.
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts are still in the band. Bill Wyman retired a couple of years ago. Brian Jones died in 1969. He was replaced by Ron Wood and Mick Taylor.
Bottom line: The Rolling Stones are the longest running band of the rock era.

"Brief encounter" is intense but very nice
It is the story of a married woman who meets a doctor at a train station. It's a chance meeting and they begin to see each other. She is Celia Johnson and he is Trevor Howard.
I had no idea that the movie is considered a romantic classic.
Also, the movie's soundtrack is fabulous, or Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto exquisitely dropped in at different moments of the story.

July 20, 1969: It was great to be alive on the day that Apollo 11 landed on the moon!
Like most families, we sat around the TV and watched Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon.
I can remember much of it, from Walter Cronkite's countdown to the lunar landing to President Nixon's speech to the astronauts.
We remember Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and congratulate the crew and everyone down here who made this amazing mission possible.
And I love The Moon We Left Behind by Charles Krauthammer.
Wonder whatever happened to that US flag and landmark that we left up in the moon?
Wonder what the next visitors will say about us?
No matter what: I was very lucky to be alive and experience one of the greatest days in world history!

We could use another Joe DiMaggio streak
(My American Thinker post)
On this day in 1941, the streak ended in Cleveland. Joe DiMaggio's amazing 56-game hitting streak was stopped when third baseman Ken Keltner made two terrific back-handed stops.
During the streak, DiMaggio hit .408 (91 for 223), with 15 HR & 55 RBI. No one has come close except Pete Rose 44 in 1978 and Paul Molitor 39 in 1987.
What makes the streak so amazing is how often DiMaggio got only one hit in the streak. Also, he did not sit out double-headers, as many players do. He got hits off Hall of Famers Lefty Grove and Bob Feller (twice), plus Venezuelan Alex Carrasquel. Alex won 50 games but made one of the most important lists in baseball history.
The streak was a symbol of consistency, as Lawrence Baldassaro wrote at The Society for Baseball Research:
On May 15, the day the streak began, the Yankees were in fourth place, and DiMaggio had batted a lowly .194 over the previous 20 games.
On June 17, DiMaggio broke the Yankee hitting-streak record of 29 games, set by Roger Peckinpaugh in 1919 and equaled by Earle Combs in 1931.
As DiMaggio's streak continued to grow it gradually became a national obsession. Day after day, across the country, the question was: "Did he get one today?"
In its July 14 issue, Time magazine wrote: "Ever since it became apparent that the big Italian from San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf was approaching a record that had eluded Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and other great batsmen, Big Joe's hits have been the biggest news in U.S. sport. Radio programs were interrupted for DiMaggio bulletins."
On June 29, in the seventh inning of the second game of a doubleheader in Washington, DiMaggio hit a single to pass George Sisler's 41-game streak set in 1922, commonly referred to as the "modern record" to distinguish it from Wee Willie Keeler's 44-game streak, the "all-time record" set in 1897.
The New York Times reported on June 30 that the fans "roared thunderous acclaim" to "one of the greatest players baseball has ever known," while his teammates 'to a man,' were as excited as schoolboys over the feat."
On July 2, DiMaggio broke Keeler's record with a fifth-inning home run off Red Sox pitcher Dick Newsome.
Fifteen days later, on July 17, the streak ended in Cleveland's Municipal Stadium in front of 67,468 fans — at that time the largest crowd ever to see a night game — when Indians third baseman Ken Keltner robbed DiMaggio of hits with two spectacular plays.
Over the course of the streak the Yankees moved from fourth place, 5 1/2 games back, to first, seven games ahead of Cleveland. DiMaggio went on to hit safely in his next 16 games, and the Yankees went on to win the pennant and then beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series.
One of the fascinating sidelights of the streak is that in his 223 times at bat, DiMaggio struck out only five times. In fact, he struck out only 13 times in the entire season. The late Harvard paleontologist and essayist Stephen Jay Gould, noting the streak, called it "the most extraordinary thing that ever happened in American sports."
DiMaggio batted .357 for the 1941 season and led the league in runs batted in and total bases. He won his second MVP Award, receiving 15 first-place votes, while Ted Williams, who hit .406 and led the league in home runs, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and runs, received eight.
The streak had another impact. It kept us busy during that summer of war in Europe. Not long after getting that MVP award, Pearl Harbor happened, and Joltin Joe was wearing a different uniform.
"Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" He didn't go anywhere, especially for me, who grew up hearing about DiMaggio from my late father and read about the streak on the anniversary. My father was 15 in 1941 and checked the living room radio in Cuba every night to hear about the streak.

We remember Ed Ames (1927-2023)
Who knew that this guy could sing like this? I didn't know! I learned later that Ames had performed professionally with his brothers over the years.
In the spring of 1967, Ed Ames shook up the charts with "My cup runneth over", one of the most remarkable performances by a male vocalist ever!
It was popular enough to compete with the heavyweights in the charts: The Beatles' "Penny Lane", The Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday" and The Turtles' "Happy together".
It was a great song.

Spring and summer of 1968 with The Rascals
The Rascals had a nice run of big hits. Some of their hits are real classics, like "Good lovin'" and the ballad "Groovin'".
They were Eddie Brigati (vocals), Felix Cavaliere (keyboard, vocals), Gene Cornish (guitar) and Dino Danelli (drums). Felix and Eddie wrote most of the hits. Dino looked a lot like Paul McCartney, i.e. look at the picture.
In the spring of 1968, The Rascals released "A Beautiful morning" and it was another big hit. It was upbeat and fun to sing along. Their next big hit was "People gotta to be free", a song that was released the summer that Soviet tanks invaded Czechoslovakia.
I just can't believe that it was so many years ago!
