 Some Democrats, especially Congressman Colin Allred running against Senator Cruz in Texas, are staying far away from VP Harris.  It’s like they are singing that old tune about a girl named Susie: “If you knew Susie like I know Susie…”

Well, let’s look around because a lot of Democrats must know something about Kamala and they don’t like it.  Let’s check it out:

Democrats running for the Senate in ‘blue wall’ states that will be critical to determining the outcome of the 2024 election are running away from Vice President Kamala Harris, signaling that they are hoping to win over some of former President Trump’s voters to keep their seats.

And Democratic candidates in those states have been careful about criticizing Trump during the high-stakes debates. They have focused on policy and their own records without taking many — or any — shots against the Republican nominee.

Talking about their records without taking shots at the former president?  Isn’t that interesting?

Frankly, it shouldn’t be in a place like Pennsylvania or Wisconsin where fracking and free trade are issues.  Of course, illegal immigration is an issue everywhere and no one is praising the Biden-Harris record on that subject.

To paraphrase the old Broadway tune, these Democrats want to tell you that if you knew Kamala like they know Kamala, Oh! Oh! what a liberal president she’d be.

Remembering Ellie Greenwich (1940-2009)

As we wrote a few years ago, Ellie Greenwich died in 2006.   She was born in Brooklyn on this day in 1940.

Along with her husband Jeff Barry, they wrote a bunch of pop songs in the 1960's, such as "Be my baby" and "Chapel of love".  Ellen Greenwich was a big part of the "girl groups" era of pop-rock music. Her songs were generally about girls singing of love and that man of their dreams! (Again, great songs that still sound great!)

She was inducted in The Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 1991.

Happy # 68 Dwight Yoakam

We say happy birthday to Dwight Yoakam.  In 1993, he released "This Time", a great country album. It still sounds years later.  It hit # 2 in the country LP charts and 3 hits singles, including "A thousands miles to nowhere."

We have a lot of country music in Texas.

Yoakam is one of my favorites because of the guitar rifts!

Yoakam has recorded about 20 albums and charted 30 singles. He was also recognized by CMA for his contributions to promoting country music outside of North America.

Babalu: The missiles in Cuba: “Se fueron los cohetes pero se quedo Castro”!

We sat around my father's Phillips radio, or the one with a short wave band.   By the way, this radio was a lifeline to international news.

My father purchased it because it was one of the first FM models to be available in Cuba.  However, it was the short wave band that became the radio's primary feature.

Our place was very close to "El Malecon", the legendary Havana ocean drive avenue.  We had a feeling that something was going on because it was full of "milicianos" with anti-aircraft weapons.  

We heard Persident Kennedy (translated to Spanish) say that there were missiles in Cuba:   

"In a dramatic televised address to the American public, President John F. Kennedyannounces that the Soviet Union has placed nuclear weapons in Cuba and, in response, the United States will establish a blockade around the island to prevent any other offensive weapons from entering Castro's state. Kennedy also warned the Soviets that any nuclear attack from Cuba would be construed as an act of war, and that the United States would retaliate in kind."

Looking back, I have a couple of questions.

First, why didn't President Kennedy tell the Soviets to take Castro out with the missiles?  My guess is that the Soviets would have asked:  Do we take him out dead or alive?  The Soviets were overextended in October 1962.  We held all of the cards and should have demanded Castro's exit.

Second, why don't we ever talk about the impact on the people Cuba?  The Missile Crisis was followed by more and more repression, brutality against the guerillas in Escambray and the consolidation ofthe Castro dictatorship.

As someone said:  "Se fueron los cohetes pero se quedo Castro"!

1993: Carter wins it for Toronto

 

Let’s turn the clock back to 1993 and remember a very happy night in Canada.   Joe Carter hit a walk off HR to win the World Series.  It was the first walk off HR since Mazeroski in 1960.

And yet it was a back to back championships for Toronto.   They beat Atlanta in 1992!

We remember Jim Bunning (1931-2017)

We remember US Senator and Hall of Famer Jim Bunning.   He was born on this day in 1931 and died in 2017.

Bunning broke with the Detroit Tigers in 1955.   He won 118 games over 9 seasons in Detroit.  He moved to Philadelphia in 1964 and won 89 games.   Overall, Bunning won 224, or 118 in the AL and 106 in the NL.

His best season was 20-8 & 2.69 ERA in 1957.      He did not pitch for a lot of winning teams and or miss a start in 11 years.    

Bunning was perfect on June 21, 1964, also Father's Day, in a 6-0 victory against the New York Mets.   In 1958, he threw a no-hitter for Detroit on July 20, 1958, against Boston, winning 3-0.

In 1996, Bunning was inducted into The Hall of Fame.    He was also elected to the US Senate from Kentucky.

October 2010: The Rangers won the AL pennant!

On this day in 2010, the Texas Rangers ended almost 4 decades of frustration for baseball fans in North Texas.  It still feels like it was yesterday.

Who could have written a better script?

The Rangers beat NY, the same team that swept them 3 times in the late 1990's!

Feliz, the young closer, struck out A-Rod to finish the game and put the Rangers in the World Series.
