I closed my store in San Francisco

Yes, I know, Tony Bennett was singing about leaving his heart in San Francisco, but I couldn’t help myself. Another merchant is announcing that they are closing their store in the city by the bay. Check this one out:

The Safeway supermarket chain has announced that it will close down one of its key locations in San Francisco in February due to concerns that customers and employees were at risk from rampant theft and threats to their safety.

The closure, which had been put off for 11 months, will affect the Safeway store on Webster Street in the Fillmore section of San Francisco, which had been operating for the last 40 years.

The company said that the store will close for good on Feb. 7, according to the San Francisco Chronicle

Last month, shocking images surfaced showing a California man assaulting a female employee at a different Safeway location in San Francisco.

Bye bye city by the bay, as they call it. Another organization has joined the ranks of rational people who can no longer support the irrational situation in the Bay Area.

What a shock. Companies can no longer do business when theft is rampant and the thieves never get arrested. In some cases, the judge puts them back out on the street in the name of social justice.

Of course, nothing will change as long as people keep voting for the ones who created this mess in the first place. My friends tell me that voters are waking up and change is coming. Well, I hope so, because you can’t have a city where stores close because theft is rampant or an employee is attacked.

Sad to watch this but it is what you are watching.

Happy # 81 Fergie Jenkins

We remember Ferguson Jenkins, one of my favorite pitchers.     He was born in Ontario on this day in 1943.

Jenkins won 284 games, completed 267, threw 49 shutouts plus 3,192 K's.

His best years were with the Cubs (1966-73).   His best season was with Texas in 1974 when he won 25 and completed 29!  What a career!

Wonder how many more games he would have won with a winning team?

Fergie never played in the post season.   He came close in 1969 but the Cubs blew a lead to the Mets in September.    In 1974, a young Texas team battled for the AL West but lost to Oakland.

Great pitcher and "innings eater".   Hall of Fame 1991.

European history expert JH Northrop will share some unique holiday traditions from Central Europe, some of which influenced the way Americans celebrate.  He will discuss Krampus, the Yule Lord; Leslie Eastman will chime in with St. Nicholas Day traditions as well.

2000: Bush v Gore was finally over

Back this week in 2000, The Supreme Court finally ended the election recounts after several weeks of partisan politics and marches here there and everywhere.  It  ended with VP Gore conceding the election.  We remember that The Supreme Court decided Bush v Gore:
In the end, seven of the nine U.S. Supreme Court justices (and three of the seven Florida justices) agreed on this: The standardless recount ordered by the Florida court - different rules in different counties regarding different kinds of chads and different ways of discerning voter intent - violated the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of equal protection of the laws.”

The US Supreme Court correctly stopped VP Gore’s plan, or selective recounts in some counties.
By the way, Bush won every recount in Florida.  (In May 2001, or almost 6 months after, he won again: Newspapers’ recount shows Bush prevailed)   How many recounts was Bush supposed to win?
The 2000 election, and the bloody recount, set the stage for “Bush Derangement Syndrome” and the left’s irrational war on the duly elected president of the US.
The syndrome originated with the late Charles Krauthammer who wrote an article about in 2003:   "The acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the presidency — nay — the very existence of George W. Bush."
Little did we realize that the era de "illegitimate" presidencies and irrational syndromes was born.  We went from Bush to Trump Derangement Syndrome.  Who remembers Democrats calling for recounts in 2000, 2004 and 2016?   I’m convinced that they would have done the same thing if Trump had won a close reelection in 2020.  They will do it again in 2024 just you wait.
Our politics was poisoned 23 years ago.  The Democrats never accepted Bush just like they never accepted Trump.   Remember that the next time that they say Trump is a sore loser.

We spoke in 2013 with Carmen Konneker, author of "My father's quest".

It is a great story of her father's life, from losing his parents at an early age, then being separated from his siblings and his eventual move to the US.

It is a great story and you should check it out.

Happy # 99 Dick Van Dyke

Dick Van Dyke was born in Missouri on this day in 1925.

Most of us met him through The Dick Van Dyke Show, one of the best sit-coms of the 1960's.   He played Rob Petrie, a TV comedy writer.  His wife was the very pretty Mary Tyler Moore.  It was a great show!

He was also in several other movies, such as "Bye Bye Birdie", "Mary Poppins", and a few others.
