If you want a good laugh, please note that the Food Network is now beating CNN in the ratings. To be honest, I’m not a Food viewer but it makes sense. I guess that their chefs and recipes must have more credibility than the news readers over at the name you can trust for news. Here is the story:

CNN’s post-election ratings continue to flail miserably following President-elect Donald Trump’s triumph in the 2024 election.

And now, CNN can’t “Beat Bobby Flay.”

Viewers would rather watch “Guy’s Grocery Games” than “Anderson Cooper 360,” according to the latest TV ratings.

Again, I don’t know anything about Bobby Flay or guys playing grocery games. My wife usually gives me a very specific list when I go last-minute food shopping. So I don’t get to play games when I’m putting whatever in my cart. I can always call her on the phone if I’m confused.

What these ratings are telling me is that Bobby Flay must be free of Trump Derangement Syndrome. In other words, he can do a whole show without talking about the former president or saying that everything about U.S. history is racist.

As for CNN, they foolishly bought into fighting with MSNBC for the anti-Trump memes. Well, it didn’t work, so it may be time to start having their hosts share their recipes and how they use coupons to save money. It might increase their audience, and isn’t that what that business is all about?

Hey Anderson — what’s your recipe for cheesecake?

1984: Howard Cosell retired from Monday Night Football

Like many of my generation, I grew up with Howard Cossell, Frank Guiford and Dan Meredith of ABC Monday Night Football.

It was the biggest game of the week and something that all of us looked forward to.  The ratings were huge as I recall.

On this day in 1984, Howard Cosell retired from the broadcast.

There were many great games and moments.

On December 8, 1980, New England and Miami were playing an important division game.

I don't recall exactly when but I fell asleep and missed the bulletin about John Lennon's shooting.   It was read on the air by Howard Cossel, who knew Lennon personally.

Here is the link of that fateful moment:

Dr. Walter Williams: How to stay out of poverty

We remember Professor Walter Williams who passed away last week.  He was born in Philadelphia in 1936 and earned a bachelor's degree in economics from California State University (1965), a master's degree (1967) and doctorate (1972) in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles.   In 1980, he joined the faculty of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., and became the John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics.

Williams sent a message to young people on how to stay out of poverty:

"Avoiding long-term poverty is not rocket science.First, graduate from high school.
Second, get married before you have children, and stay married.
Third, work at any kind of job, even one that starts out paying the minimum wage.
And, finally, avoid engaging in criminal behavior."
Makes a lot of sense!    Dr. Williams's suggestions are a part of his life story.

1799: President Washington died in Mt Vernon

George Washington, our first president, died on this day in 1799.    Washington was living in Mt Vernon, his retirement home after leaving the White House in 1797.

Without question, He was the most important and consequential American of that period.

He will always be remembered as the indispensable American or the one who made the country possible.

This is why we refer to him as first in peace, first in war and first in the hearts of his countrymen.

We remember Patty Duke (1946-2016)

We remember that Patty Duke was born in Queens, New York, on this day in 1946.  She died in 2016.

Patty had a very popular TV star in the 1960's, or the kind of program that millions of girls would watch every week to catch up with her antics.

She was very talented and worked on many other movies as well.

We remember Bill Buckner (1949-2019)

Bill Buckner was born in Vallejo, CA on this day in 1949 and died after a battle with cancer in 2019.

He hit .289 with 2,715 hits and a .408 on-base average.    Buckner was a tough out, a great competitor and the kind of guy that you wanted on your team.   Indeed, a great major league hitter.

1977: Another anniversary of Saturday Night Fever

The movie "Saturday Night Fever" hit the theaters this week in 1977.  The rest is history.

Like many, I watched the movie and found the soundtrack fantastic.  I wasn't that crazy about the plot, i.e. good music, silly story!

There were four new songs from the movie.   They were:  "How deep is your love", "Stayin' Alive", "Night Fever" and "More than a woman".

1967: "Incense and peppermints" on the radio

We remember Strawberry Alarm Clock, a one-hit wonder, and "Incense and peppermints".    We called it "
Psychedelic music".   The song is a fantastic arrangement:    2 minutes & 55 seconds.    The intro is super and I love the ending.
