1987: The day that John Smoltz joined the Atlanta Braves

On this day in 1987, the Tigers traded a young John Smoltz to the Braves for veteran Doyle Alexander.    The Tigers went on to win the AL East and Alexander played a huge role down the stretch.
No one knew that Smoltz would turn into one of the best right handers in the NL.
John Smoltz won 213 games with a 3.33 ERA.   He also saved 154 games when he was turned into a closer.     Awesome career!
The Braves won the NL pennant in 1991, 1992, 1996, 1999 and the World Series in 1995.  Smoltz was a big part of that pitching staff!
