Spain goes left -- and probably off the rails

Image result for spain map cartoons

We learned that the socialists won in Spain, but it won't be easy to put a government together, as we see in this report:
Spain’s socialist prime minister says he will consider talks to form a new government only with parties that respect the constitution and promote social justice.
Pedro Sánchez declared his party the winner in Sunday’s general election, a ballot in which the far-right made inroads for the first time since Spain returned to democratic rule.
Sánchez hinted at a preference for a left-wing governing alliance but his stress on the constitution also sent a warning to Catalan separatists even though he may need their support to be elected by Parliament’s lower house to a new term as prime minister.
Translation: Spain is a mess.

The socialists got the most votes but it translates to 123 of 350 seats.  It takes 176 to have a majority and nobody is within sight of that number.
What happens now?  The socialists will have to persuade 53 other members to form a government.

It may happen if PODEMOS, the other left party with 57 seats, joins forces with the socialists.  At the same time, these two socialist parties are not as friendly as you may think.

The biggest loser was the conservative Partido Popular. They got smacked and down to 66 seats.  The biggest winner was VOX, a far-right party that made its debut with 24 seats.

In reality, the biggest loser was Spain.  The socialists have nothing to say other than just exploit the bad economy and tell people what they want to hear.  It won't get better for a while if at all!

Last, but not least, aren't you glad that we have an Electoral College, i.e. no multi-party elections that result in chaos as we see in Spain the morning after?

Impeachment ain’t going nowhere

Image result for impeachment cartoons
Impeachment is going nowhere like that Dylan song recorded by The Byrds:
I don’t care how many letters they sent
The morning came
The morning went
Pack up your money
Pick up your tent
You ain’t goin’ nowhere
The public is not buying it as you can see here: ABC/WaPo Poll: Support For Impeachment Drops To 37%
It makes sense to me because voters understand what impeachment means:
First, it will freeze the U.S. House and nothing will get done about the border chaos or health care.  The Democrats seeking reelection in competitive districts next year can not afford that.  They need to go back and say that they passed something rather than just investigate President Trump; and,
Second, it will be very difficult to write articles of impeachment without a crime or to get a conviction in the U.S. Senate.
Will the angry left force the House Democrats to start impeachment proceedings?  I don’t know, but they will make a lot of noise.   In the end, impeachment ain’t going nowhere.

The world encouraged Joe Biden to run for president?

Related image
A day ago, I heard V.P. Biden say the world encouraged him to run.  We didn’t get a lot of details, but let’s take V.P. Biden at his word.
So why are all of those world leaders looking to replace President Trump?
It cannot be the U.S. economy.  After all, the latest first-quarter GDP figure is rather strong at 3.2%.  In other words, that’s a lot exports and imports going across the Atlantic.
Maybe they miss President Obama.  Didn’t he call them “free riders” over NATO?  In other words, President Trump was not telling the NATO countries anything different from what they’ve heard from many U.S. presidents.
Maybe it’s about those wonderful and universally loved Paris Climate Change Accords.
Well, let’s see what world leaders think of the Paris deal.  This is from National Post:
Barely two years ago, after weeks of intense bargaining in Paris, leaders from 195 countries announced a global agreement that once had seemed impossible.
For the first time, the nations of the world would band together to reduce humanity’s reliance on fossil fuels in an effort to hold off the most devastating effects of climate change.
“History will remember this day,” the secretary general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, said amid a backdrop of diplomats cheering and hugging.
Two years later, the euphoria of Paris is colliding with the reality of the present.
Global emissions of carbon dioxide are rising again after several years of remaining flat.
The United States, under President Donald Trump, is planning to withdraw from the Paris accord and is expected to see emissions increase by 1.8 percent this year, after a three-year string of declines.
Other countries, too, are showing signs they might fail to live up to the pledges they made in Paris.
In short, the world is off target.
Really?  The world is off target?  And they are expecting to get back on target with a President Biden?
Not so fast, world.
One of the reasons why Mr. Trump won is that he went into Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania and won blue-collar workers.  I am not sure that V.P. Biden is going to go there and tell those workers to let Europeans show them the way.
So the world wants V.P. Biden?  My guess is that he won’t be bragging about it.

Remember President John Glenn?

It took some pollsters only a few minutes to tell us that V.P. Biden, or #21, has a nine-point lead on President Trump.
It reminded some of us of other polls from days gone by, such as this one from the spring of 1983, when President Ronald Reagan was coming out of the 1981–82 recession:
The headline links to a Morning Consult story that found Biden with a 42 percent to 34 percent lead over President Trump in a hypothetical matchup.
“Along with his advantage over Trump, Biden has held a consistent lead in Morning Consult’s weekly tracking among likely Democratic primary voters,” the report says.
But the only thing shocking about this poll is that anyone would put any stock in such polls so early in the race.  Just ask President John Glenn.
In May 1983, a Gallup poll came out showing that then-Sen. John Glenn would do better in a matchup against President Reagan, with a far wider margin than the Biden/Trump split.
As the New York Times reported on May 19 of that year, the survey “found that Senator Glenn led Mr. Reagan 54 percent to 37 percent.”
At that point, the eventual Democratic nominee, Walter Mondale, had a 49 percent to 43 percent edge over Reagan.
A Harris survey in July 1983 concluded that “it seems certain that the 1984 presidential election will be close, with neither the President nor his most probable Democratic opponents assured of any solid lead.”
Actual result: Reagan won a massive landslide over Mondale, getting almost 59% of the popular vote and 525 electoral votes — winning every state except Mondale’s home state of Minnesota.
The story points out that President George W. Bush was also trailing Senator Lieberman in the spring of 2003 by nine.
My point is that voters vote on Election Day, not 19 months in advance.
Time will tell whether President Trump is re-elected or not.  He does have a stronger U.S. economy that President Reagan had a this time: “US economy grows by 3.2% in the first quarter, topping expectations.”
The moral of the story is to read polls with a little dose of healthy skepticism.

Impeachment, the census plus VP Biden and Senator Harris

Impeachment is not going anywhere:  “ABC/WaPo Poll: Support For Impeachment Drops To 37%“.

It makes sense to me because voters understand what impeachment means:

First, it will freeze the US House and nothing will get done about the border chaos or health care.  The Democrats seeking reelection in competitive districts next year can not afford that.  They need to go back and say that they passed something rather than just investigate President Trump; and,

Second, it will be very diffciult to write articles of impeachment without a crime or to get a conviction in the US Senate.

\Will the angry left force the House Democrats to start impeachment?  I don’t know but they will make a lot of noise.

On another front, Senator Kamala Harris is apparently a gun owner.  She said in Iowa that she owned a gun “for personal safety.”

So what’s the big deal?  She is a Democrat and has been pandering to the left about gun control.

On the census,  I’ve always been very proud to say that I am a citizen of the US.

After all, this wonderful country opened its doors and gave me a chance to realize my potential.

My life would have been very different if I stayed in Cuba. I learn this everytime that I talk to someone from the island.

The Supreme Court is looking into whether or not the citizenship question should be asked as part of the census.

A new poll from ScottRasmussen.com reports that “73% BELIEVE CITIZENSHIP QUESTION IS APPROPRIATE FOR CENSUS“.

Put me down with the 73%.  What’s the issue?  Why shouldn’t we ask such a question?

Finally, our favorite line of the day comes from VP Biden, now running for president: “The thing I’m proudest of… not one single whisper of scandal.

My guess is that the upcoming IG report may amend VP Biden’s memory.

Has the NBA finally turned off voters?

Image result for nba images
A few months ago, the Golden State Warriors refused to go to the White House to join President Trump for a championship celebration.   They met with former President Obama instead.
Yes, it’s a free country but should everything be about politics?  The White House visit goes back years.  It’s about honoring a championship team, not about playing politics.
The NBA has been very politically in your face, to say the least.   Let’s look back at some examples:
Carmelo Anthony marched in a Baltimore protest over the death of Freddie Gray in April.
LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose and others wore shirts that said “I can’t breathe” to protest the death of Eric Garner in December.
The Los Angeles Clippers turned their shirts inside out to hide the logo to protest racist statements made by owner Donald Sterling in 2014.
The Miami Heat wore hoodies in solidarity with Trayvon Martin in 2012.
And the Phoenix Suns wore “Los Suns” jerseys to protest a controversial Arizona immigration law in 2010.
I don’t know of too many fans who want to get lectured about politics when they drop $100 to go to a game.
A day ago, I learned that NBA TV ratings are down.   In fact, they’ve sunk to “new lows.”
To be fair, maybe they play too many playoff games or people are not watching TV like they used to.
At the same time, maybe they’ve turned off a lot of guys like me.  Again, I don’t really care LeBron James thinks, specially when he is not even playing up to his potential.

Caravan stopped in Mexico?

Image result for caravans mexico images
For some time, I’ve written here that my Mexican friends south of the border are puzzled with the caravans walking through their country.
For whatever reason, Mexico may be changing strategy.   Yesterday, we learned about the fate of some Central Americans who entered Mexico.  This is from the Los Angeles Times:
Mexican police and immigration officials in the southern state of Chiapas on Monday rounded up hundreds of undocumented Central American migrants headed for the U.S. border.
It’s one of the largest raids targeting a caravan since the exodus began last year, and comes as the U.S. ramps up pressure on Mexico to curb the flow of migrants.   What we know so far:
Police arrested 300-500 migrants outside the city of Pijijiapan, Chiapas, reports said.
They were part of a caravan of about 3,000 Central Americans heading north.
Witnesses said authorities forcibly wrestled women, men and children into vehicles.
The migrants were driven to buses, likely headed to migration centers for deportation, according to activists.
Local media reported on Friday that more than 250 migrants were also arrested in the nearby city of Mapastepec.
Change of heart or something else?   We will see,
My guess is that the Lopez-Obrador administration is starting to feel the heat from Mexicans.
Most Mexicans, as we do too, sympathize with people who want a better life.  However, they just don’t their highways to turn into caravans of people to the U.S.
Furthermore, there is a valid concern south of the border that there are other nationalities joining the caravan and tagging along.
Another Mexican friend told me last night that President Lopez-Obrador may be trying to show the cartels who is “boss.”  Over the last few weeks, we’ve read about the role of organized crime in this human movement.
Last but not least, don’t underestimate President Trump’s threats.  In other words, President Lopez-Obrador knows that President Trump does not make empty threats.

Pelosi can’t control the majority she did not create

Related image
Speaker Nancy Pelosi must be wondering if her promotion was worthwhile.  A few months ago, she was the minority leader, she could tell the angry base that they did not have the votes to impeach President Trump.  Now, she is the speaker and forced to tell the angry base that they can not afford politically to impeach President Trump.
This week, Speaker Pelosi met again with her caucus and had to break the bad news.  Yes, she has a majority but would rather not impeach.
This is from the Washington Post:
In a rare Monday night conference call, the California Democrat stressed that the near-term strategy in the wake of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s report is to focus on investigating the president and seeing where the inquiries lead. Members of Pelosi’s leadership team reaffirmed her cautious approach, according to four officials on the call who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.
“We have to save our democracy. This isn’t about Democrats or Republicans. It’s about saving our democracy,” Pelosi said.
But Pelosi’s message did not go over well with several Democrats, who argued that Congress has a duty to hold Trump to account with impeachment despite the political blowback Pelosi has long feared.
The lady is right, but how long can she control the forces in the party?
Speaker Pelosi knows what impeachment proceedings will bring:
First, I am not sure that they have the votes to do it.  Yes, they have a majority but a lot of those “moderates” are hearing about health care, not impeachment when they go home.
Second, how foolish will they look writing articles of impeachment when there is no crime?  What will be the basis of impeachment?   What did Trump do? Beat Hillary?
Finally, and perhaps most important of all, Speaker Pelosi will not a get thing done.  Impeachment will take months and require a trial in the Senate.  In other words, you can write off her entire agenda.   It won’t get done.
Speaker Pelosi is right, but this is what happens when you surround yourself with people who are frankly out of their heads.

Pete is white (but he has a 'husband'!)

Image result for mayor pete cartoons
We’ve seen news reports of concerns in the Democrat Party over nominating a white man for president.  It certainly puts a lot of pressure on the white guys leading the pack at the moment.
Over the last month, the flavor of the month has gone from Beto to Pete.  Naturally, these two men have drawn a lot of attention.
To be fair, staffers leave presidential campaigns for this or that reason.  So, let’s give Beto the benefit of the doubt about the roster changes on his campaign
What can’t be denied is that Mayor Pete Buttigieg is gaining on former Representative O’Rourke.   As they used to say in Top 40, Pete is going up to the charts and Beto is losing steam.
So, what’s going on?
First, and foremost, Beto is an empty suit.  He ran a great campaign in Texas.  He also benefitted from $ 80 million, media softballs and a national effort to defeat Senator Cruz.
On the other hand, Mayor Pete served in Afghanistan and has public sector executive experience running a city.
Two, Beto is weird — something that was completely overlooked during his campaign in Texas.
Most of all, Mayor Pete has a husband and Beto has a wife.
In today’s Democrat Party, a man with a husband who can’t stop tweeting fits in much better than one with a wife who smiles and stands by her man.
