Tim Walz was on Fox News Sunday.  My guess is that the campaign was hoping to stop the critics who say that Walz avoids interviews.  After this morning, the campaign may stop doing interviews altogether.

Walz was incoherent on abortion. Let’s check the interview: 

“You signed the bill that makes it legal through all nine months. Is that a position you think Democrats should advocate for nationally?” Bream asked.

“The vice president and I have been clear the restoration of Roe versus Wade is what we’re asking for,” Walz responded.

“But that law goes far beyond Roe v. Wade,” Bream pressed. “Let’s agree, in what you signed there’s not a single limit through nine months of pregnancy. Roe had a trimester framework that did have limits through the pregnancy. The Minnesota law does not have that.”

“This doesn’t change anything. It puts the decision back on to the woman, to the physicians,” Walz responded. “And we know that this is simply something to be brought up — to be very clear Donald Trump’s asking for a nationwide abortion ban.”

“[Trump] has said repeatedly that he will not sign a national abortion ban. Are you calling that a flat out lie?” Bream asked.

Well, he won’t own his law so he starts blaming Trump again.

Here is the Democrats’ problem. The polls show that voters want abortion access or legal abortion but only under certain conditions.  They want the option to terminate a pregnancy because of rape or incest. The voters do not support late-term abortion, which is what the Minnesota law approves.

Waltz fell into quicksand and had no idea on how to get out.  So he started blaming Trump because that’s the only song on their playlist.

Happy # 81 to Jose Cardenal

We remember Jose Cardenal, a pretty good outfielder born in Matanzas, Cuba on this day in 1943.

Cardenal broke with the Giants in 1963 at age 19. He played with the Angels, Indians, Cardinals, Brewers, Cubs, Phillies, Mets and retired with the Royals.

His best years were with the Chicago Cubs 1972-77:  A .296 batting average & a .363 On Base Pct.

Jose became a real fan favorite at Wrigley Field in the 1970’s with his flashy personality.   Cardenal retired with a .275 career average and 1,913 hits.   He made it to The World Series with Kansas City in 1980.

1960: "Route 66" made its debut on US TV

"Route 66" made its debut on US television on this day in 1960.    It was on until 1964. 

The show was about two young men, Buz Murdock and Tod Stiles.   They drove across the country in an inherited Corvette (Chevrolet was one of the show’s sponsors), doing odd jobs and looking for adventure.   It was also shot on location.

Like many of you, I saw the reruns in the 1970's.    I loved the music intro.

We remember Al Martino (1927-2008)

Remember the opening wedding scene in "The Godfather"?  Remember Al Martino?   He was born in Philadelphia on this day in 1927 and passed away in October 2009.   He was 82.

We will always remember Al Martino because of "The Godfather" movies.

Al Martino had a great voice, as we can appreciate from listening to his many selections.

2001: President Bush warned that it would be a long war

President Bush announced that US troops were on the march in Afghanistan on this day in 2001.    

He spoke to the nation and said something that sounds rather prophetic today:  

He also warned that the war in Afghanistan would likely be only the first front in a long struggle against terrorism. He vowed to continue to take what he called the “war on terror” to those countries that sponsored, harbored or trained terrorists.

And here we are.    Sadly, President Obama's policies set back our gains in Iraq and the region.    We made gains under President Trump.  Time will tell whether President Biden's poorly executed withdrawal will require our troops to return.

Let me recommend President Bush's "Decision points".

Cuba and the 1960 Nixon-Kennedy debates

My late father would often speak about the Kennedy-Nixon debates of 1960. 

Like he told me, many Cubans listened to that debate very carefully on the radio.  It was broadcast to Cuba on short wave radio, perhaps Voice of America or some other frequency.

By the summer of 1960, Cuba was in rebellion against the Castro regime.  

Cubans were asking these questions:  What happened to the elections?  Why are all of those Soviets landing at the airport?  Why are Cuban owned businesses “nationalized”?  Why is every regime critic called a CIA operative?  Why so many political arrests?  Why were newspapers shut down?   

Finally, the candidates debated foreign policy and Cuba was a huge topic:

“In the second of four televised debates, Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard Nixon turn their attention to foreign policy issues.
Three Cold War episodes, in particular, engendered spirited confrontations between Kennedy and Nixon.
The first involved Cuba, which had recently come under the control of Fidel Castro.
Nixon argued that the island was not “lost” to the United States, and that the course of action followed by the Eisenhower administration had been the best one to allow the Cuban people to “realize their aspirations of progress through freedom.”
Kennedy fired back that it was clear that Castro was a communist, and that the Republican administration failed to use U.S. resources effectively to prevent his rise to power.
He concluded that, “Today Cuba is lost for freedom.””

A few months after inauguration, President Kennedy dropped the ball at The Bay of Pigs.   On December 2nd, Castro announced that he had always been a “Marxist Lennist”!   In one year, Cuba went from being a topic at the debate to a Soviet satellite and a headache for the US.
