Doing nothing and laughing watching "A night by the opera" with The Marx Brothers

What a great movie.   

You pick up a new line every time.    

Today, I remembered that great line about "the sanity clause" in the contract that Chico and Groucho were negotiating.   

Or, the scene where they are ordering food from that little room.....or when the cleaning ladies come in to make the bed.

How did these guys come up with so many lines?   Wonder if they just made up lines on the set?

"Que Pasa USA" and growing up Cuban in the US

For years, "Que Pasa USA" was a hilarious comedy about growing up Cuban in the US. 

It was the story of a Cuban family's struggles as "refugees" in Miami in the late 1960's or early 1970's.   

We used to call it the "refugee experience" in my household. My parents always said that we were "refugees", perphaps a reference to the politics that brought us here. 

Like most things Cuban, it included parents, very funny grandparents and a couple of teenagers who were in the middle of everything. It sounds like my own family growing up in the US! It will remind you of yours!

My favorite show was the one about the grandparents taking the US citizenship test or the Cuban garage sale!

Why was "Que Pasa USA" so good? Because it was true. It was easy to see your mom and dad on that show.   Also, who can ever forget having a Cuban sister?

Happy # 80 Roy White

Roy White was born in Los Angeles on this day in 1943.    He played his entire career with the Yankees and earned the name "Mr. Consistent".

Roy broke with New York in 1965 and played in some of the worst Yankee teams ever.   Nevertheless, he was a steady player who played lots of games, good glove in left field and decent hitting:   .271 batting average, a very good .360 on-base-pct, and 1,803 hits in 1,881 games!

Between 1969 and 1973, he walked 439 times making him a perfect # 2 hitter ahead of Thurman Munson, Bobby Murcer and later Lou Piniella.

Roy got to play with the Yankees in the 1976-78 World Series.   He retired after the 1979 season.

I remember Roy White as a really good guy.

Happy # 81 Jerry Koosman

Jerry Koosman was born in Appleton, Minnesota, on this day in 1942.   He broke with the Mets in 1967 and was part of that young pitching staff that included Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan, 

He won 19 in 1968 and 17 in 1969, or the year that the Mets beat the Orioles in the World Series.   

Koosman was 140-137 with the Mets with a 3.09 ERA & 109 complete games, or an indication that he pitched well with a lot of bad teams.    He was traded to the Twins and won 39 games in 3 seasons.

Overall, Koosman won 222 with a career 3.36 ERA.    Wonder how many games he would have won with better teams?   My guess is that it would have at least 275 games and we'd be talking about Koosman in the Hall of Fame.

Happy # 79 to Steve Carlton

Who are the great lefties in major league history?  

Sandy Koufax of the 1960's comes to my mind.   

Randy Johnson of the 1990's makes the list.

And Steve Carlton who was born on this day in 1944.

Over an amazing career, Carlton won 329 games with a 3.22 ERA.    He also completed 254 games with 4,136 strikeouts.   

His best season was 1972:   27-10, a 1.97 ERA, 30 complete games, 8 shutouts and 320 strikeouts.     The amazing thing is that he pitched for a team that won 59 games.

Great pitcher.    Maybe the best lefty after Koufax!

Happy # 75 Steve Garvey

We say happy birthday to Steve Garvey, who was born in Tampa, Florida, on this day in 1948.

Steve broke with the LA Dodgers in 1969 but did not get a lot of playing time until 1973.   It was great after that!

He had a great career:   .294 batting average, 2,599 hits, 272 HR & 1,308 RBI.    Garvey was the 1974 NL MVP and came in second in the 1978 vote.

Garvey was traded to San Diego and played for the Padres in the 1984 World Series.  He hit a walk off HR to beat Chicago in game 4 of the NLCS.

Ingrid Bergman and "The Bells of St Mary's"

Thank God for DVD's and retro movie channels.    A few days ago, I decided to watch a movie and ended up watching one of my all time favorite movies.    "The Bells of St Mary's" is about Ingrid Bergman playing "Sister Benedict" and Bing Crosby as "Father O'Malley". 

I love it for two reasons:

First, "Sister Benedict" reminds me of all of those wonderful nuns who've dedicated their lives to teaching children all over the world.   They taught us love, responsibility and regard for our Judeo-Christian traditions.  We are better men and women today because women like Sister Benedict came into our lives.

Second,  the movie is so inspirational at a time when we can all use an alternative to meaningless "hope and change" speeches.

Check it out and you will see what I mean.  I promise that you will love "Sister Benedict".

Happy # 74 Cecil Cooper

We remember Cecil Cooper, who was born in Texas on this day in 1949.

"Coop" broke with the Red Sox in 1971 and was traded to Milwaukee in 1976.   He had his biggest seasons with the Brewers, including a huge hit in the 1982 ALCS against the Angels.
     
Overall, he hit .298 with 241 HR, 1,124 RBI and 2,192 hits in 1,896 games.    As a Brewer, "Coop" hit .303 in 11 seasons and won Gold Gloves in 1979 & 1980.

Great player.

Merry Christmas is the right message

Christmas is too commercial, too material. There is not enough Christ in Christmas.

For years, I have objected to the excessive commercialization of Christmas.   I don't like it at all.  I hate hearing Christmas music on the day after Thanksgiving.  In fact, some of our radio stations go 24/7 Christmas after Thanksgiving. I don't like it.

However, the attack on Christmas is just as crazy.

The US is a Christian majority nation. We were founded under Judeo-Christian traditions.

No one should be offended by "Merry Christmas" or nativity symbols. 

I am not upset when I see Jewish symbols related to holidays. I think that it's great that everyone can practice their religion freely.

"Seculars" have gone crazy, from "Under God" in the pledge to this massive attack on Christian symbols.

I am happy that Bill O'Reilly has made a big issue of this. I am happier that Americans are putting pressure on stores to display Christmas symbols.

Again, thanks to Bill O'Reilly for his work.
