Remember when there were lots of movies about crazy school parties?

Image result for fast times at ridgemont high images

Back in the early 1980's, I was very interested in my career, sports, and the Reagan presidency.  Nevertheless, I couldn’t help but notice the movies at the theaters.  In other words, there were lots of crazy movies about people going to high school and college.
In many of these movies, it was cool to “score” with the girl.  I’m sure that boys in previous generations wanted to score, too.  However, the message in those Frankie Avalon-Annette Funicello movies or Where the Boys Are was that premarital sex was a bad idea.  In those movies, young men were told to respect girls rather than getting them drunk for quick sex.
Hollywood made a bunch of these movies, from Animal House to Sixteen Candles, as I was reminded of by Vox:
Some of the most popular comedies of the ’80s are filled with supposedly hilarious sequences that portray what in 2018 would be unambiguously considered date rape.
As long as everybody involved is acquainted with each other, these movies tend to treat those rapes as harmless hijinks.  They don’t really count.  They’re funny – even in movies as sweet and romantic as Sixteen Candles.
The cultural understanding of rape in the 1980s was fundamentally different from how we understand it today[.]
It was so, and that’s the college scene Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford grew up in.
I am not making excuses for any behavior.  At the same time, let’s remember that Hollywood made millions of dollars promoting the kind of behavior alleged in many of the accusations against Kavanaugh.  It was cool in the movies, and probably a lot of students did it, too.
So do Democrats want to make college days an issue before considering a person for the Supreme Court?  My guess is that many future Democrats would have a hard time living up to that standard.
Again, I don’t believe that Dr. Ford has proved a thing other than that she lived in Maryland at the same time that Mr. Kavanaugh did.  Nevertheless, if someone did that to her, then he probably learned the behavior watching one of the popular “comedies” of the time.

The Democrats united the Trump and Bush wings of the party

Image result for kavanaugh images
Let’s hope that this is the last time that we go through this.
Like many of you, I caught bits and pieces of Blasey Ford and Judge Kavanaugh on Thursday. Overall, I’d say that Kavanaugh won the day.
My problem with Blasey Ford is her story. Something happened but she does not where or when.  She can’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was Kavanaugh that night.  She thinks it was but no investigation can be done on the basis of this shallow story.
Gladly, we live in a country where we don’t destroy people for fuzzy memories from 30-something years ago.
As for Judge Kavanaugh, he closed the deal with a very heartfelt presentation.  I kept looking at his wife and feeling so sorry for her and their two daughters.  Yes, time will pass, but these girls will be haunted forever.  Is it too much to think that some college professor out there will talk about “Kavanaugh the gang rapist”?
At this point, the people who say that they believe Blasey Ford are making a partisan statement.  They have no evidence to draw that conclusion.  Blasey Ford is probably a nice lady, but her story does not add up.
At the end of the day, it was Senator Lindsey Graham and Senator Jeff  Flake who put him over the top.  Graham’s remarks were powerful.  Then Flake was contacted by former President George W. Bush.
So what did the Democrats do on Thursday?  They looked foolish and united the Trump-Bush wing of the party.  Thank you, Democrats.

New Cuban leader same old speech before the UN

Image result for diaz canel images
Back in 1960, Fidel Castro came to the UN in the middle of a U.S. presidential election.  He put on a different show than he did in the spring of 1959 when he was telling “Meet the Press” that he was not a communist.
The new leader of Cuba, the one appointed by Raul Castro, came to town talking reforms but singing the old song about “socialismo”.
This is from USA Today:
Miguel Díaz-Canel, the hand-picked successor to retired president Raúl Castro, mirrored his predecessors’ speeches by repeatedly bashing the United States, the economic embargo it maintains against Cuba, and its continued occupation of the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. He blasted the U.S for its military interventions and economic sanctions against adversaries including Venezuela, Iran, China and North Korea.
And while Díaz-Canel lamented the deterioration of U.S.-Cuba relations under President Donald Trump and said he was ready and willing to improve them, he made clear that the end of Fidel and Raúl Castro’s rule over the island nation does not mean the end of the communist system they created.
So much for change in Cuba.
Diaz-Canel’s speech may have pleased the usual suspects around the world.  It did not do much to resolve the island’s short-term problems, from a shortage of aircraft parts to keep planes flying to doing anything about the island’s crippling infrastructure.
Finally, it made it less likely that a meeting with President Trump is around the corner after all of the attacks on the U.S.
No one will remember this speech in a week.  Nevertheless, President Diaz-Canel just confirmed what we knew — no change in Cuba anytime soon!

What do we do about Maduro?

Image result for venezuela map images
Over the weekend, I spoke with a Venezuelan living in Virginia.  He was in the Dallas area at a religious retreat.
So I asked him the same question I’ve asked many others: “What about a U.S. intervention to remove Maduro?”
His answer is the same as I’ve heard from others: “Everybody in Venezuela wants it to happen.”
To be fair, I have not done a scientific survey, and I am speaking with anti-Maduro exiles living in the U.S.  At the same time, Maduro is not that popular down there.  I wouldn’t be surprised if many Venezuelans living in the country agree with an intervention, too.
Jorge Castañeda, the Mexican writer, looked at the issue this week.  He wrote:
Recently, Luis Almagro, the secretary general of the Organization of American States, or O.A.S., made a stunning statement at a rally on the border between Colombia and Venezuela, warning that no option was off the table in Venezuela, and in particular, that a “military intervention” to “overthrow” its government, could not be discarded. Some observers interpreted this as meaning that an invasion of Venezuela by other countries was now on the agenda.
Others, more intelligently, surmised that Mr. Almagro was referring to a domestic involvement by the Venezuelan armed forces: in short, a military coup d’état.
I don’t really know what he meant, either, but his concerns are completely real.
First, this is no longer a domestic crisis.  There are countless Venezuelans walking into Colombia and Brazil.  They are naturally putting pressure on social services and creating a backlash from the locals.  The number is over 2 million, according to Castañeda.
Second, Venezuela is more than a failed state.  It is a disaster.  Venezuelans are hungry.  They are ill lacking medicine supplies.  The country cannot provide basic services, from electrical power to a police force.  Let’s not forget that violence is rampant, in large part because the state has failed.
Will the U.S. participate in an overthrow?  I would say no.  At the same time, we should be encouraging a military coup and assistance to bring in emergency supplies as soon as Maduro is gone.
What do they do with Maduro?  He should put on trial, and let the Venezuelans figure that out.

Bound for a runoff down in Brazil

Image result for brazil map images

Down in Brazil, there is a presidential election in a few weeks.  The election is happening in the context of a slow-growing economy, corruption battles, violence out of control, and the stabbing of a presidential candidate.
The latest is from Reuters:
Fernando Haddad, the presidential candidate for Brazil’s leftist Workers Party (PT), is closing the gap with poll-leading far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro for an Oct. 7 first-round vote and would beat him in a runoff, a survey released Monday showed.
Bolsonaro held steady at 28 percent of voter approval in the first round as compared to the same Ibope poll released last week. Haddad gained three percentage points to hit 22 percent, according to the survey, released by the Estado de S.Paulo newspaper and the Globo TV network.
We will see.
I did speak with a friend down in Sao Paulo yesterday.  He basically agrees with the poll and the suggestion that Haddad would win the runoff.  At the same time, my friend said that the issues, the violence and corruption, favor Mr. Bolsonaro.
It’s true that Bolsonaro has a little Trump in him and that he often speaks without thinking.  He has promised a no-nonsense policy against criminal elements.
Of course, the bottom line is how the other candidates react and who they endorse in the second round.
So let’s come back to this after the first round in a couple of weeks.

A bad 24 hours for journalism

Image result for bad news images
Since last night, we’ve witnessed several examples of unacceptable news reportage.
First, a new woman emerged against Judge Brett Kavanaugh but even some journalists can’t believe what they are watching.  The new woman’s story is based on a corroborating witness who wasn’t at the party.  What?  Apparently he heard something about the party after it happened.  Again, what?
Jedediah Bila wrote this:
New Yorker piece doesn’t even confirm that Kavanaugh was at the party, contains an admission of memory gaps by Ramirez due to intoxication, and has numerous people on the record disputing her claim.
Once again, I’m awaiting facts: evidence, corroboration, possible testimony
Caleb Hull put it this way:
Timeline:
• She didn’t know who it was for 35 years
• Kavanaugh was nominated
• She met with Dem lawyer for 6 days to “assess her memories”
• Accused Kavanaugh
• She still isn’t even sure it was him
• All the witnesses deny it
• Kavanaugh denies it
• Other outlets passed on story
It looks as if the second woman’s story has more holes than the first woman’s story.
How can a business continue to be this sloppy?  Don’t these news organization have editors or people on staff who double check this stuff?
Journalism did not do much better on Monday morning.  First, we heard that Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein had resigned.  Then we learned that he was on his way to The White House to resign or get fired.  It was all because of that Friday story about the Deputy AG preparing a case to bring down the President through the 25th Amendment.
Well, it turns out that he did go to the White House but it was prearranged and now he will meet with President Trump on Thursday.  To be honest, I did not understand how the Deputy AG was on his way to see the president in the White House on the day President Trump was in New York.  Maybe I’m too logical.
The second “woman story” is just bad journalism.  The Deputy AG story is just another case of “sources” not knowing what they are talking about.
In the meantime, journalism suffers again.

Vote and move forward with Judge Kavanaugh

Image result for kavanaugh images

We were hit on Sunday night by new allegations that Judge Brett Kavanaugh has a woman problem.  The allegations are brand new and it may take a day or two to clear the dust.
It appears that another woman remembers something from his college days.
I guess that we know now what the delay for Christine Braley Ford to testify was all about.  She was buying time to allow the other story to develop.  Maybe I’m too cynical but it smells like the delay was planned to give others more time.
The GOP was trying to show respect for Ford.  On the other hand, Ford was being told to delay, like the coach who goes to the mound to give the guy in the bullpen a little bit more to get ready.
According to Power Line, the whole point is to feed the narrative that Judge Kavanaugh was a repeat offender.  They want to turn Judge Kavanaugh into a Bill Cosby or Harvey Weinstein character. Didn’t he pass several FBI background checks?
Now, it ‘s up to the GOP.  They can continue the farce and invite the new accuser or take a vote and move on.  If they take a vote, they will have to count on every GOP vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh.  If they delay this, then they run the risk of losing the Senate and never putting this good man in the court.
At the same time, my instincts tell me that there are a lot of women watching all of this Kavanaugh show and wondering:  Is my husband next?  Or my son?  Or my father?
In other words, it does not take a lot to destroy a man these days.  In fact, just accuse him of something that can’t be proven and you have a friendly media willing to carry the accuser’s water.
This is why I continue to believe that this overreach will explode in the Democrats’ faces.  Add to all of this the names of Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Senator Tom Carper of Delaware, and DNC # 2 Keith Ellison and the party may regret the whole thing.
Worst of all, whatever happened to justice for the accused?  I guess that it does not apply to any conservative who believes that abortion should be settled by states rather than justices.
I repeat:  There is a woman out there wondering if her husband is next.  She will not be voting for the Democrats in a few weeks.

Beto vs Ted round 1

Image result for cruz vs beto images

Senator Cruz and Representative O’Rourke finally met each other in the first debate.  There are two more debates later in the campaign.
Yes, I plan to vote for Senator Cruz.  My mind was made up before the debate.  Nevertheless, I was curious to watch Beto, or the man so many are already comparing to the Kennedys.
Honestly, Beto looked stiff, maybe nervous, and totally uninspiring.  It’s hard to see how he pleased his base with that performance.
First, he looked uncomfortable talking about issues.  He went to slogans and clichés every single time.  How many times did he say he visited all 250-something counties?  Or the one about working with President Trump when we can and standing up to him when we must?  Or the silly line about the GOP tax plan being good to the rich?
Does Mr. O’Rourke understand that Texas is booming and no one down here is giving President Obama the credit?
Then he started talking about uninsured Texans.  Can someone remind Mr. O’Rourke that the Affordable Care Act is in fact the law of the land?  How can so many be uninsured?  Didn’t Beto tell Texans that they can buy a subsidized policy in the exchange?  To my knowledge, President Trump has not stopped anyone from buying a policy on the exchange.
On the other side, Senator Cruz just pricked each Beto balloon with ease.  In baseball terms, Beto had very little on the ball last night.
It won’t get easier for Mr. O’Rourke.  He will soon debate foreign policy, and I can’t wait to hear his position on Israel.
It won’t get easier when they talk about abortion, an issue that does not play well with Hispanic women – or his vote against banning abortion after 20 weeks.
Overall, not a good debate for Mr. O’Rourke.  It didn’t help that his explanation of the 1998 drinking and driving incident contradicts police reports.  To be honest, I’m not that worked up about the incident twenty years ago, but Beto sounded like a man who didn’t anticipate such a question.
To be fair, Senator Cruz is not a TV-friendly candidate.  At least he was prepared and had a game plan.  Beto, on the other hand, just seems to be counting on some kind of magic.  Beto thought he could charm another audience, but he really didn’t.
Beto showed that he is a candidate traveling too much rather than doing issue-oriented press conferences.  He’d be better off going on Texas talk radio than going on Ellen again.  He needs to get better at handling tough questions, the sort his “Beto-mania” sycophants are obviously not asking him.
Last, but not least, the two reporters were good.

The “Flores playbook”

Image result for Texas SD-19 images
We’re still enjoying Pete Flores’s super-victory in a state Senate election in South Texas.  He flipped a Democrat seat in a district that the GOP assumed it couldn’t win.  In fact, the GOP had not win this district in 139 years!
How did Mr. Flores do it?  How did a novice politician defeat an experienced and well known former congressman?  How did a GOP candidate win a district that’s 73 percent black and Hispanic?
He did it with big ideas, as Newt Gingrich wrote:
The big choices in this 17-county border district were:
Right to life versus tax-paid abortion.  As Catholics, many Hispanic voters simply won’t vote for liberals who are for tax-paid abortions.  Of course, every Democrat who is campaigning for free government-run health care is campaigning for tax-paid abortion.
Safe borders versus dangerous gangs.  As Patrick explained, “most law-abiding Hispanics support controlling the border, stopping criminals and keeping their community safe from gangs like MS-13.”  He pointed out that he campaigned four years ago on repealing the sanctuary city law in Texas and got about 50 percent of the Hispanic vote.  Flores’s own campaign website clearly states: “Our borders must be secure, and our communities must be safe. … We will make Texas borders secure and a bad place to be for criminals and gangs.  We are and must remain a state where the rule of law reigns.”
Gun rights versus gun control.  Many Hispanic voters strongly support the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms.  They distrust and oppose liberals who want to have government control their guns.
Local rule versus centralized bureaucracy.  Most Hispanic voters favor smaller government, lower taxes, and more community rather than Washington controls (or Austin controls in this case).
Work versus welfare.  There is a strong work ethic in the Hispanic community, and the job-creating power of the Trump system is being admired and applauded.  Currently having the lowest Hispanic unemployment rate in history is a real asset for Republicans in the 2018 campaign.
Flores understood his district, a rural conservative district where they value life, safe borders, the 2nd Amendment, and hard work.
How does the GOP compete from coast to coast?  Talk about big issues as Mr. Flores did!

They used to be a serious political party

Another Friday, another good report about the lowest jobless claims since 1969, the month “Sugar sugar” was on Top 40 Radio.
So are the Democrats cheering the good news?  No, they are destroying themselves with their obsession to defend Roe v Wade at any cost.
The latest example is the circus around Judge Brett Kavanaugh.
Once upon a time, a man with his credentials would have been confirmed to the Supreme Court on a voice vote.  There would have been no controversy at all.
Well, that was then and this is now, as the editorial in the New York Post reminds us:
Democrats on Tuesday proved they’re not out to carefully consider Christine Blasey Ford’s accusation against Judge Brett Kavanaugh. They just want to use it as the pretext to keep the circus running for weeks.
Led by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, they’re now demanding a long, drawn-out investigation into Ford’s sexual-assault allegation. But what’s to investigate? She can’t give a specific time and place for the event; is the FBI supposed to track down everyone who attended a high-school party in the DC suburbs in 1982?
Meanwhile, the accuser still hasn’t responded to numerous requests from the Senate Judiciary Committee to arrange the testimony she claims she wants to give — raising questions about whether she’ll even show up at Monday’s hearing.
This is a circus, a travesty, and any other term you might think of.
This is not justice or good for the many women in the country who are real victims of sexual misconduct.
Senator Feinstein and her colleagues are obsessed with a 36-year-old accusation that can’t be proved or disproved but overlook recent charges against Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio or Keith Ellison, running for Attorney General in Minnesota.
This storm will pass and Judge Kavanaugh will soon be Justice Kavanaugh.   My anger, and that of many “fellow red-wavers” will have its day on the first Tuesday of November.
