It's time for Santorum & Gingrich to step aside so that we can focus on Obama

Romney won big in Arizona and got enough votes to carry Michigan.  At the end of the day, he is one step closer to winning the nomination.

As I have posted before, I have a lot of respect for Santorum and Gingrich.  They are both great leaders and have a lot to be proud of.

However, it's time to put the country over party and to start consolidating around Romney.

Let's come together and direct our fire at Obama.

Senator Rubio will be the GOP VP nominee

We do not know yet who will be the 2012 GOP nominee.  Will it be Santorum or Romney? My guess is that it will be Romney but that's a very fluid situation.

It looks that Rubio is the leading candidate to share the GOP ticket with Santorum or Romney.

How do we know that Rubio is doing well?  The Democrats are already declaring war on Rubio.  The Hill has a story about the Dems and Rubio:

"Democrats have started to wage a political assault against Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), and the intensity of their attacks will intensify in the coming weeks.
Senior officials in the Democratic Party anticipate that Mitt Romney will win the Republican presidential nomination and then tap Rubio to be his running mate."

Why the attacks on Rubio?

First, he is a very attractive spokesman for conservative values.  Also, Dems have overestimated their hold on Hispanic voters.  I think that Rubio on the ticket could mean that the GOP do better with Hispanics, i.e. around 45% like Bush in '04.

Second, Rubio could deliver Florida, the 3rd largest electoral vote block.

Third, Rubio will energize the base like on one else.

It's getting harder and harder to support Pres BO's policy in Afghanistan

Two years ago, many of us supported Pres BO's surge in Afghanistan because it was necessary to go after the bad guys.  We could not allow for a power vacuum and the return of The Taliban to the country.

Since then, Pres BO has been more worried with appeasing "the anti-war wing" of the Dem than winning the war.

He announced a withdrawal without listening to the commanders on the ground.

Wonder how that impacted all of those people who were working with our soldiers?  Who in their right mind is going to help our guys?  Who is going to put their cards on the table and then have the terrorists kill them or families after we leave?

He is now publicly calling for negotiations.  Who are we supposed to negotiate with?

He just issued an apology over this Koran burning.  What's wrong with an apology?  It has emboldened the mobs and the Koran was not burned on purpose.

It's time to get out and fight terrorists with special forces, air power and drones that follow them around.  We should advise the terrorists that they won't return to power because we will bomb them wherever they are or hide.

It makes no sense to put our soldiers in harm's way if Pres BO is not interested in winning.

So let's kill terrorists by dropping bombs and making their lives miserable with drones.  it makes no sense to have US troops under the current rules of engagement & serving a president who is exclusively focused on energizing his disenchanted left wing base.

Check out our Monday commentary:

President Obama, the apology & and gasoline prices

Pres BO has two big problems:  high (and  higher) gasoline prices and a mob in Afghanistan emboldened by the apology.

What do these problems have in common?  Leadership and projecting weakness or confusion.

Let's look at gasoline prices.

Yes, it's true that oil prices are connected to international factors, such as supply & demand, the Middle East crisis and the growth of cars in China & India.

At the same time, Pres BO has been sending daily messages that he is "anti-oil" and would prefer a world where people drive electric cars and operate under some kind of "green technology".

Unfortunately, we are still going to need "oil" to run our cars and factories.  Also, "green tech" is years away.

So what happens when you don't authorize more drilling for oil in the US or you reject The Keystone Pipeline?  The answer is that we have less reliable oil and future prices go up.

No leadership or vision.

Over in Afghanistan, we saw a mob attack and kill US soldiers over allegations of mishandling a Koran.

What was the point of the President of the US apologizing?  We should have heard "a low volume" apology and that is it.  It made no sense to elevate this incident to the level of a presidential statement.

How are the Afghan mobs reacting to our apologies?  They are emboldened and more aggressive.

Again, no leadership and too much apologizing.

We warned all of the "yes we can" screamers that the world was a lot more complicated than just blaming everything on Bush.  Unfortunately, too many of Obama's voters fell for the nonsense that we had to be "nicer" in order to project empathy.

We are being "nice" but no one seems to be appreciating it.  On the contrary, 2 soldiers are dead and others at risk.

Last, but not least, I am growing more and more impatient with Pres BO's handling of the Afghanistan War.

Yes, I supported sending 30,000 troops.  I also supported Pres BO's decision to make a stand over there.

However, I don't like the weakness projected, such as publicly announcing our withdrawal.  What was the point of that?

Also, Pres BO has not told NATO to get in the game and allow their soldiers to fight.  It makes no sense to have a NATO operation without all of the NATO countries on the battle field.

Dear Pres BO: Who is going to apologize to the parents of the soldiers killed by the mob in Afghanistan?

Once again, we've seen just how irrational things can get in the Middle East:

"Yesterday, Afghanistan saw its third day of rioting after workers collecting garbage at NATO's Bagram air base found charred remains of religious texts, including the Koran.

The texts in question had been defaced with extremist propaganda and had been disposed of.

It's unclear who did the disposing, but it was reported that the process was overseen by a U.S. officer.

Since then, crazed mobs have gathered in Afghan streets chanting "Death to America," and the Taliban urged Afghans to "continue seeking revenge until punishment is dished out with your hands."

On Thursday, outside a U.S. base in eastern Nangarhar province, an Afghan soldier did just that, killing two American soldiers and escaping into the welcoming arms of an approaching mob.."  (WashTimes)

As we've posted before, religious symbols and books must be treated with respect.  However, the violent reaction is uncalled for and won't make the Afghanistan War more popular in the US.

Furthermore, what's the point of a presidential apology?  What exactly did our troops do wrong?  Shouldn't the commander in chief stand with the troops?

Apology?  Will Pres Karsay apologize to the parents of the soldiers killed by these mobs?

The GOP primary is still going on

We had another debate on Wednesday and it appears that Romney won.  At least, that's what the pundits are saying.

It also looks like the race is settling down into two groups.  The first group is Romney vs Santorum.  The second group is Gingrich plus Paul.

Based on what I saw, Romney was very presidential and Santorum was playing defense most of the night.

As I've posted before, Romney will force Obama to talk about the economy and an incoherent foreign policy.  On the other hand, Santorum allows Obama to talk about values, a great topic in the GOP primary but not in the general election.

The problem is that Israel can not wait for Pres BO or the useless UN Security Council

As the world turns, and everybody is busy with their own troubles, Israel is watching Iran get more and more hostile.

I think that Israel has to make a decision:

Do we wait for Pres BO to finish his "class warfare" speeches or do we move to protect ourselves from Iran?

It won't be easy for Israel to take out Iran's nuclear sites.  However, Israel does not have a choice.

I like what Niles Gardiner posted about this:

"
For the Israelis this is a matter of survival, of averting a nuclear holocaust, not a faith-based initiative that rests upon weakened sanctions advanced by a divided UN Security Council, and the non-existent goodwill of an Islamist dictatorship that has threatened to wipe Israel off the map. The Obama administration’s naïve approach towards the Iranian nuclear threat has been one of weak appeasement, which coupled with the European Union’s foolish policy of “constructive engagement”, has bought Tehran precious time to advance its nuclear programme."

As we learned in the 1930's, being "nice and understanding" to bad people does not bring peace.   Just ask all of the people who were overrun by Nazi tanks when Hitler moved into Poland in '39 or bombed London every night.

In other words, bad people usually do bad things specially when they sense that no one will stop them!

Here we are:  The clock is ticking, Pres BO wants to "tax the rich" and we may be hearing Israeli jets dropping big bombs over Iran very soon.

Who will Pres BO defend the morning after Israeli jets drop the bombs?  Or will he call PM Netanyahu to reconsider that speech about the '67 boundaries?

We discussed the Middle East & Israel with Bill Katz on Sunday.  Bill has a great post today on Iran, the very weak Pres BO and Israel:

Spain and a few other thoughts

The conservatives (Partido Popular) won big in Spain about 90 days ago.  It was one of those big "wave" elections where one party replaces another in power.

How are the conservatives doing?

It's too early to tell but PM Rajoy has made some controversial decisions.  He raised taxes because the deficits were bigger than anticipated.  He also relaxed labor laws so that companies can fire people a little easier.

Again, it's too early to tell.  Furthermore, Spain is impacted by the larger European debt crisis.  In many ways, Spain's destiny is in the hands of Germany, the country that seems to be calling the shots in the debt negotiations.

Remember when the media was always talking about "gasoline prices going up" under Pres Bush?

Is the media in the tank for Obama?  Let's look at gasoline prices.

Since Pres BO took over, gasoline prices are up significantly:

"At $3.53 a gallon, prices are already up 25 cents since Jan. 1. And experts say they could reach a record $4.25 a gallon by late April.

"You're going to see a lot more staycations this year," says Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research. "When the price gets anywhere near $4, you really see people react."

Already, W. Howard Coudle, a retired machinist from Crestwood, Mo., has seen his monthly gasoline bill rise to $80 from about $60 in December. The closest service station is selling regular for $3.39 per gallon, the highest he's ever seen.

"I guess we're going to have to drive less, consolidate all our errands into one trip," Coudle says. "It's just oppressive."

The surge in gas prices follows an increase in the price of oil." (AP)

You may remember that gasoline was under $2 when Pres Bush flew back to Texas.  It has almost doubled since Pres BO took the oath.

To be fair, gas prices are not something that presidents can increase or decrease.  Nevertheless, Pres Bush was blamed for gas prices increases during his presidency.  We were told back then that Bush-Cheney were protecting the interests of the oil companies and passing the cost to the consumer.

So what's going on?  Is Pres BO also carrying the interests of "Big Oil"?

Also, where is the media?  Where is the same media that reported 24/7 about gas price increases under Pres Bush?

So is the media in the tank for Obama?  When was the last time that the mainstream media ran a front page story on gasoline prices doubling under Pres BO?

Last, but not least, I should add that Pres BO has hurt the country by playing "base politics" and cancelling the Keystone Pipeline.  My guess is that Pres BO's decision will be a huge issue in the campaign but don't expect anyone in the mainstream media telling viewers about the high cost of gasoline.

The Dallas Stars & Dallas Mavericks plus TCU!

We spoke with David Busby about the state of DFW sports teams.

The Dallas Mavericks are winning and will play the Knicks on Sunday.  However, they are also showing signs that their tops stars are getting older.  You can see it with Kidd & Nowitzki, a couple of superstars who need more rest than ever.

The Dallas Stars are playing before lots of empty seats.  Sadly, the Stars are no longer a top attraction around here.  We need more players and victories or this team will move out of the local sports radar.

We also discussed the TCU scandal.  It is a terrible story because TCU has developed into the top college story in the DFW area.   I'd hate to see TCU end up in the same place that SMU was back in the late 1980s.

The GOP: Santorum, Romney or Gingrich

Unfortunately, the GOP contest has gone a lot longer than I would have predicted last September.  You may remember that I posted that it would be Perry or Romney.

We are navigating on very uncharted waters.  I can't recall the last time that a GOP primary was this nasty.  You have to go back to Pres Ford and Gov Reagan back in '76 or maybe Sen Dole & VP Bush in '88.

The GOP lost '76 & won in '80.

In '76, Pres Ford could not overcome Watergate but still came within a few votes of winning election.

In '88, VP Bush rode to victory on the back of Pres Reagan's popularity, or the closest thing to a 3rd Reagan term that the voters could vote for.

In both cases, the tough primary made the GOP nominee into a better candidate.  The tough primary fight forced the candidate to answer questions or deal with issues before the voters went to vote in November.

My guess is that the same thing will happen in '12.  I can see how Romney has benefited from having to campaign and sell himself.  You can say the same about Santorum.

Finally, don't be surprised if Romney-Santorum ends up as the ticket.  It happened to Reagan and Bush in 1980.

We spoke with Barry Casselman about the primary on Friday:

The Rangers will start playing exhibition games very soon!

Are you over the 9th and 10th innings of game 6 of the 2011 World Series?  Are you over the series period?

The Rangers will soon be headed to Arizona trying to put the series behind too.  They need the kind of frame of mind that puts bad things behind as soon as possible because the other AL teams are out to dethrone Texas.

Over the winter, the Rangers lost CJ Wilson and replaced him with Yu Yardish, the Japanese star.  I don't know if Yu will win 15 games but we do know that CJ won 15 and 16 in the last two years.

They are also going to bring Feliz from the closer to a starter role.  I am optimistic about that move because Feliz has great stuff.

Do the Rangers have enough pitching?  I think that they do but it's up to Yardish and Feliz working out in their new positions.

Nathan will do a good job as the new closer.  That was a great pickup.

The lineup is about the same.  The big challenge is keeping all of these guys for a few more years because there is only so much money to go around.

I love this lineup:

Kinsler, 2b
Andrus, SS
Hamilton, LF
Beltre, 3b
Young, DH
Cruz, RF
Napoli, C
Moreland, 1b
Gentry, CF  (Murphy at LF against lefties and Hamilton moves to CF)

How will the Rangers deal with the Angels?  I think that they will do well and repeat as AL West champs.

Protect Your Voice Campaign Kicks Off

ARRA News Service - Protect Your Voice: The Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity called on CPAC 2012 attendees to sign a petition that aims to grant bloggers the same legal protection journalists have. According to American Journalism Review's 2009 analysis there were 30 percent less statehouse reporters then compared to 2003. While their grant has not been renewed to do the study since then, any reporter can attest to the continued cutbacks by walking into a newsroom.

Fortunately, a new wave of energized reporters has been filling those vacancies out of passion - many unpaid. These bloggers are dedicated to informing their citizenry of its elected officials’ actions. They are addressing the threat to democracy.

Because of this, we believe they deserve the same protections as reporters in the court room. We aim to protect the bloggers that are reporting on acts of government as meticulously and honestly as the journalist sitting next to him or her at the press conference. Citizen Journalists and Bloggers should not be penalized for providing a valuable service to our country. Citizen Journalists and Bloggers in every state deserve to be included in the state’s shield laws and granted Freedom of the Press rights.

Times have changed and it’s time for the law to adjust. Go to ProtectYourVoice.org to show your some post Valentine Day love for bloggers .

The BO budget: More spending, "class warfare" & trillion dollar deficits!

We just learned that the "deficits will keep on coming."  In fact, they are deficits in the trillion dollar range:

"The budget, an outline of which was released by the White House Friday night, will show a higher deficit this year than in 2011, up from $1.3 trillion to $1.33 trillion."

They apparently plan to save money by ending the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.   I guess that we are now able to end wars whether our enemies agree with us or not.  It must be Obama magic.

They project growth but how is that going to happen with tax increases?

The new budget is a farce.  It won't pass the Dem Senate.  Remember that the last Obama budget went down 97-0 in the Dem Senate.    They are not rushing to defend the 2012 version either!

We need leadership and we are not getting any from a Dem president with a Dem Senate.

In the real world, an executive would be fired for proposing such a travesty.  He would get an earful from board members and shareholders.  He'd be fired for total irresponsibility!

Again, it must be the Obama magic that will make it all work or confuse enough people to get him reelected.

Pres BO will have to convince Iran that we are ready (and willing) to take out their facilities with or without the UN or allies

As the world turns and Iran gets closer and closer to  having a nuclear weapon, we must consider our options.

First, Israel will attack first and take out some of the Iran facilities.  The problem is that Israel may not have the planes or Navy or missiles to cripple the program.

Second, the Security Council will pass another round of countless resolutions without much "bite".  Is this Iraq and UN resolutions all over again?

Third, we sit down and talk to Iran.  Don't bet on that but I could be wrong.

Fourth, we could have an internal uprising like in Egypt or what is going on in Syria.  Don't bet on this unless you want to read about a bloodbath all over the country.

Fifth, we take out the facilities by dropping bombs and unleashing all of those Navy missiles.

It may come down to the fifth option because our allies are too busy playing games or joining China and Russia at the UN.

It may come down to one single message:  We will destroy everyone of your facilities no matter how many bombs we drop on your country.

Is Pres BO capable of delivering that message?  Time will tell but nothing else seems to be working.

Check out our Tuesday commentary:

Too much BO: Do we need a president telling insurance companies to provide birth control?

Pres BO is trying to change the conversation and get back on track after making that very stupid and tone-deaf decision about contraceptives.

Pres BO is now dumping it on insurance companies.  They will now be expected to provide birth control treatment for free.

Isn't this man great at spending other people's money?  Wonder why we still have a trillion dollar deficit?  (Obama budget to miss deficit goal)

There are many problems with dumping this on insurance companies:

First, there is no such thing as a free lunch or birth control pill.  Someone will have to pay.  The WSJ editorial is correct:

"Insurance companies won't be making donations. Drug makers will still charge for the pill. Doctors will still bill for reproductive treatment. The reality, as with all mandated benefits, is that these costs will be borne eventually via higher premiums."

Second, where exactly does Pres BO, or the federal government, get the authority to force a private company to offer something for free?  What else?  Are we going to force Hollywood to give away "movies for free"?  Where do you stop?

Once again, we see that the Obama administration is all about getting in our face with its values and in our pockets to fund its programs.

We learned a lot this week about BO-Care.  Let's hope that the Justices are watching this travesty and move to throw out this expansion of the federal government.

BO-Care surprises: Democrats should have read BO-Care before voting for it

What happens when you don't read something as complex as a national health care plan?

I guess that you learn or thing or two after the bill is passed and someone tries to implement what you voted for.

It's not a secret that when you pass a "one size fits all" plan that you will have lots of arguments about abortion and contraceptives.

This is why I'd prefer private plans so that people can make those decisions and purchase whatever insurance plans supports their principles.

The Dems' basic problem is that they didn't read the bill or discuss it in public.  We were told that this plan would do this and that but no one actually saw the plan or posted it on the Internet for discussion.  We know now....don't we?

The Dems own BO-Care and they will have to carry that burden unless they are lucky enough to have the Supreme Court overturn this monster this summer.

President BO's "not much of a policy" toward Latin America

Candidate BO spent much of 2007-08 criticizing Pres Bush.  From GITMO to Latin America, he had a lot to say about everything.

For example, he said this about Pres Bush and Latin America in a May 2008 speech:

"So we face a clear choice in this election. We can continue as a bystander, or we can lead the hemisphere into the 21st century. And when I am President of the United States, we will choose to lead."

How is that "choosing to lead" going?

Let's read this from Jaime Daremblum, diplomat and analyst of US-Latin America relations:

".....George W. Bush signed free-trade pacts with Chile, Central America, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia, and Panama; created the anti-drug Mérida Initiative; and boosted development aid to Latin America through the innovative Millennium Challenge Corporation.

Unlike Bush — and Bill Clinton, and George H.W. Bush, and Ronald Reagan — Obama has not spearheaded a major regional initiative of his own. He eventually got Congress to approve the Colombia and Panama trade accords (though only after Republicans captured the House of Representatives), and he has turned a portion of the Mérida Initiative into the Central America Regional Security Initiative.
But in each of those cases, Obama was either completing or expanding on a policy that originated under his predecessor."

Why does Latin America matter?

First, they live in our neighborhood.  They are our neighbors.

Second, China is expanding its economic influence.  They are doing business with Brazil and Chile, a couple of the most dynamic economies in the world.

Third, Iran is also expanding in the region.  They are looking for trouble in our neighborhood.

Fourth, Latin America is a natural destination for our exports.

Fifth, we have great allies, and leaders, in Colombia, Chile and Mexico.

Sixth, the small countries of Central America are under siege from the drug cartels.

We are not asking the Obama administration to meddle in Latin America.  We are simply calling for a little more attention because the region matters a great deal to our national security and economy.

BO-Land: More and more of us dependent on a government check

We've heard Newt Gingrich say that Pres BO is the "food stamps president".  Unfortunately, he is also the president who is expanding the number of people who are dependent on government.

IBD has a great column about this topic
:

"The American public's dependence on the federal government shot up 23% in just two years under President Obama, with 67 million now relying on some federal program, according to a newly released study by the Heritage Foundation.
The conservative think tank's annual Index of Dependence on Government tracks money spent on housing, health, welfare, education subsidies and other federal programs that were "traditionally provided to needy people by local organizations and families."
The two-year increase under Obama is the biggest two-year jump since Jimmy Carter was president, the data show."

Some would say that this dependency is directly related to the bad recession.  There is some truth to that.

However, some of us believe that this strategy of dependency is intended to create voters, or people who vote for the Dems to guarantee their benefits.

This dependency has created all of this structural spending that continues to grow year after after.  It did not start with Pres BO but he has clearly taken it to unsustainable levels.

Last, but not least, dependency is bad for the soul because it destroys human beings. It's time to tell people that the check will stop and they are now responsible for taking care of themselves and their children.

This is not about birth control....it is about the First Amendment!

Pres BO has discovered that Dem politicians are not happy with the HHS mandates either.  I guess that some of these guys must be getting an earful from their constituents.

I think that this is further evidence that Pres BO is politically tone deaf.  Frankly, what do you expect from a president who grew up in left wing precincts and Rev Wright's church?

Where was the political adviser who told Pres BO that this would be political suicide?

Pres BO & liberal Dems are presenting the mandates as a defense of woman's health care.   That's nonsense.  Nobody is stopping women from getting contraceptives or abortion counseling.  This is about Catholic hospitals refusing to go along with treatment that violates their principles.

Again, this administration is "tone deaf".  I guess that they just think that we are all of those people who "cling to our guns and religion."

Three (3) good questions about the guns "handed" to the Mexican cartels

Bob Owens of PJ Media has been doing some rather good coverage of "Fast and Furious", or the misguided program that "walked" or "handed" 2,000 guns to the Mexican cartels.  (I mean "high powered" weapons)

Bob posted something new today.  He wants 3 questions answered and so do many of us.

Here are the 3 questions:

"Who conceived this radical departure from normal law enforcement practices? Who conceived an operation that depended upon the deaths of hundreds or thousands of Mexican nationals for its success?"

This is true.  Didn't someone in this administration raise his hand and say that there would be likely be lots of Mexicans killed?  Or did they just assume that the deaths would go unnoticed?

We remind you that these are some of the same people who had "heart attacks" when the Bush administration "water boarded" 3 terrorists in GITMO.

I guess that sticking KSM's head under water is horror but drafting a plan that would ultimately kill hundreds of Mexicans is OK or the cost of doing of business.  KSM was the mastermind of 9-11 and "coughed up" vital information that led us to other terrorists.  In contrast, the people exposed to these weapons were innocent Mexicans.

We understand that 300 Mexicans have been killed by these guns.  Nobody was killed when they were water boarded in GITMO.

Here is the second question:

"Which Department of Justice officials saw that Operation Fast and Furious was dependent on hundreds or thousands of firearms being given to the cartels and recovered at the scenes of crimes, knew that the crimes in question were likely to be murders of Mexican nationals or U.S. citizens along the Mexican border where the cartels operate, and approved the operation anyway?"

In other words, who signed off on the operation and what was he thinking?  What kind of "amateurish thinking process" went into this?  How could these people have been so foolish?  How can a plan of this magnitude get by without people "very high up" in the Obama administration hearing  about it?  How do you "hand" weapons to criminal organizations in another country and not tell Pres BO, AG Holder or the Secretaries of State & Defense?

Here is the third question:

"Knowing that Operation Fast and Furious could be the political and criminal albatross that drives away moderates and Latino voters and destroys his chances of winning a second term, why does President Obama refuse to appoint a special prosecutor or, at the very least, call for Eric Holder and his direct reports to resign? "

This is the question that raises more and more questions.  What is holding Pres BO from calling for an independent investigation and cleaning up this mess for once and for all?

It raises one "cynical" but appropriate question:  Did Pres BO know that his Justice Department was "handing" these guns to Mexican cartels without telling Pres Calderon and the Mexican authorities.

We don't know the answers but this thing smells "bad" and will keep on smelling "bad" until AG Holder and Pres BO come clean and explain this nonsense.

We discussed "Fast & Furious" on our Thursday show:
