What are they thinking at Marquette?

angela-davis-james-baldwin19nov701
Let me ask you a question: if Angela Davis and her gang were running things, would they invite an anti-abortion, pro-traditional marriage priest to speak at their government-run universities? Would they teach everything from socialism to capitalism? What version of Hiroshima would they tell?  Would they refer to George Washington as the father of the country or another rotten white slaveowner?
I think that you know the answers.
You can look at Cuba, one of Angela’s favorite regimes, for an example of what happens when communists run things. Simply put, “inclusion” is not a word in their way of doing things!
Nevertheless, Marquette University has just invited Angela Davis:
Marquette University, a Jesuit school in Milwaukee, plans to host radical communist activist Angela Davis for a lecture Wednesday night.

The lecture is part of a series of “inclusive conversations” the school is hosting in order to confront the challenges of racial inequality.
“As a Catholic, Jesuit university committed to social justice,” the university’s website reads, “we seek to energize our campus and engage all Milwaukee’s communities by asking, ‘What is your freedom dream now?'”
Davis is most renowned for her career of radical leftist activism, involving leadership stints in both the Black Panther Party and Communist Party.
Today, she continues to proclaim that “capitalism is the most dangerous kind of future we can imagine” telling the Los Angeles Times recently, “as long as we inhabit a capitalist democracy, a future of racial equality, gender equality, economic equality will elude us.”
Davis is notorious for landing on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list in 1970 for fleeing police after she was charged with purchasing the murder weapon used in a courtroom shootout in 1970.
At the Women’s March in January, Davis called on activists to become “more militant.”
“Those who still defend the supremacy of white male hetero-patriarchy,” she said, “had better watch out.”
Her views on abortion and marriage openly contradict Catholic teachings.
Nevertheless, Marquette is touting Davis as a “living witness to history” and featuring her remarks as a “distinguished lecture.”
Davis’ speaking fee has previously been listed between $10,000 and $20,000.
As someone who grew up in Wisconsin, I have several friends who still up there. Last night, I checked in with one of them and he’s outraged. I won’t tell you what he said because it is not suitable for print.
I am hoping that someone in the audience will ask Miss Davis a few questions.
They can start with one simple question: why does a black doctor in Cuba (Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet) get thrown in jail for refusing to do an abortion?
Here is a followup: Will Angela join us in protesting the lack of “inclusion” in her favorite regimes?
Marquette’s administration is making a big mistake here.
Wonder how they will explain this to the police officers protecting Miss Angela?

Michael Moore needs help

Back in the days of Bush-43, Michael Moore made a movie blaming President Bush for everything under the sun.

I recall watching it and coming to two conclusions. It was Bush Derangement Syndrome for the world to see and a lousy film as well.

I remember even Christopher Hitchens went after Moore:

To describe this film as dishonest and demagogic would almost be to promote those terms to the level of respectability.

To describe this film as a piece of crap would be to run the risk of a discourse that would never again rise above the excremental.

To describe it as an exercise in facile crowd-pleasing would be too obvious.

Fahrenheit 9/11 is a sinister exercise in moral frivolity, crudely disguised as an exercise in seriousness.

It is also a spectacle of abject political cowardice masking itself as a demonstration of “dissenting” bravery.

As I recall, the movie did not talk about Saddam’s murder machine or the way that women and gays were treated over there. I guess that Moore did not know or chose to forget that part of the story. He also failed to mention that Saddam had used chemical weapons against Iran or the Kurds.

Not surprisingly, Bush-43 ranks higher than Moore’s movie these days.

Moore is back. He does not have a new film but another silly statement.

According to news reports and Tweets

Moore wants the world to remember March 28, 2017:

Historians in the near future will mark today, March 28, 2017, as the day the extinction of human life on earth began, thanks 2 Donald Trump

Trump has signed orders killing all of Obama’s climate change regulations. The EPA is prohibited henceforth from focusing on climate change.

Time will tell whether March 28, 2017 will be remembered as the day that Trump triggered human extinction or the moment that Moore lost whatever credibility he has left.

Let me put my money on the second option. In other words, Moore is crazy and needs help from that fellow who sits you on a sofa for an hour or so.

AG Sessions and sanctuary cities

By coincidence or design, AG Jeff Sessions started a conversation about sancutary cities on Monday after Friday’s ObamaCare debacle.
AG Sessions announced that he will begin enforcing the Obama administration’s rules. He hinted that he may do more! Frankly, I hope that he will go the distance on this.
As expected, the left is up in arms from Los Angeles to New York City. It’s enough to make you wonder about the state of the modern Democrat Party.
As I’ve debated often on Spanish TV, this is about the rule of law, not immigration. Frankly, the leaders of these cities are violating their oath, and in some cases have “blood in their hands” as Todd Starnes wrote:
In 2015 Kate Steinle was gunned down by an illegal alien in San Francisco — a sanctuary city. The man charged with her murder was a seven-time felon who had been deported five times.

Five times.
There was an immigration hold on the suspect, meaning the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement wanted to come get him and ship him out of the country. But San Francisco authorities set the man free. Just a few months later, Steinle was dead.
Steinle’s blood is not only on the hands of her killer, it’s also on the hands of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.
It’s beyond belief that liberal mayors are allowing illegal aliens to run wild in the streets of American cities, terrorizing law-abiding citizens.
So Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ vow to punish sanctuary cities is welcome news.
On Monday he announced plans to withhold from any city that harbors illegals billions in federal funding.
“Not only do these policies endanger lives of every American, just last May, the Department of Justice inspector general found that these policies also violate federal law,” Sessions said. “The president has rightly said disregard for law must end.”…
San Francisco’s Lee defiantly declared Monday on Twitter that “#SanctuaryCities are safer, more productive, healthier places to live.”
Tell that to Kate Steinle’s family.
Let me add that the Democrats are not doing Hispanics, legal or illegal, any favors. We are not talking here about the many illegal immigrants who are working and staying out of trouble. ICE is looking for people who have committed crimes or who’ve defied deportation orders. How can any responsible person be against that?
Go the distance, AG Sessions. There are a lot of Hispanics in these cities who would like to see these criminals off their streets.

Another thought about canceling that vote on Friday

55553327
On Friday night, I was wondering if the GOP was the infamous gang that can’t shoot straight.
Today, I feel a bit better.  Don’t get me wrong: Speaker Ryan fumbled in several ways, from setting an artificial deadline to writing a bill for the Senate rather than the House.  They should have passed a simple repeal and let the senators deal with it.
Let me give you a couple of reasons for a my optimism today:
First, the Democrats reacted to Friday’s vote by calling on their leadership to go for single-payer.  In other words, the Democrats have put Senator Schumer and Representative Pelosi in an impossible position.  They want single-payer, but you can forget about that in this Congress or any in the foreseeable future.  The party’s base is in no mood to “repair.”
It would have been wiser for Democrats to join some kind of bipartisan repair effort with Speaker Ryan’s bill.  They blew that chance and now are stuck with their wild-left base again demanding the impossible.

Second, the media’s reaction was so overblown that you would have thought that it Game 7 of the World Series.  My friend Barry Casselman has a few sobering thoughts:
The recent effort by Speaker Ryan was a short-term failure, but by no credible means the “disaster” now being heralded in the hostile establishment media.
In fact, it might have been a political blessing in disguise for both the speaker and the White House if they use the occasion to continue their legislative program efforts more realistically and more effectively.
It’s not Trump’s “Bay of Pigs,” and he has time to recover.  It’s not that bad, especially if they can score quickly on other topics.  By the way, it was smart of Attorney General Sessions to come out and change the subject with a statement about sanctuary cities.
In the end, maybe Speaker Ryan, and President Trump, got caught up in this hysterical “100 days” media deadline.
Also, they let the Democrats, and their allies in the media, mislead the country about the legislation.
So go back to square 1 and take the time – i.e., you’ve got time to do all of this!  I voted for Trump not thinking he’d be done with everything before Easter Sunday!

Hugo’s revolution is now a first-rate humanitarian crisis

There are two types of humanitarian crisis.
The first one is a natural disaster, such as an earthquake or bad hurricane. Most countries generally survive these crisis with decent leadership and some help from the outside.
The second type is what happens to a country that flirts with socialism, as we read recently in Forbes:
The economic horror in Venezuela continues to unfold — the Bolivarian socialists have achieved the entirely remarkable feat of making Cubans flee the country in search of a better life. Seriously,
Cubans, from a poverty stricken socialist dictatorship are now leaving an oil rich nation in search of a better life. It takes a serious level of economic mismanagement to achieve that. That serious level being exactly the one thing that Venezuela has lots of, of course.

So much so that Nicolas Maduro has just appealed to the United Nations to come and organise the supply of medicines for the country. This being something that normal places can manage on their own and usually rather well too.
The cause of all of this is that Maduro, and his predecessor Chavez, decided that the way to run an economy was to do everything that the textbooks say you shouldn’t do to an economy:
Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has asked for help from the United Nations to boost supplies of medicine.
Mr Maduro said the UN had the expertise to normalise the supply and distribution of drugs in the country.
Venezuela’s Medical Federation said recently that hospitals had less than 5% of the medicines they needed.
The president blames the problems on an economic war against his government and the sharp fall in oil prices.
There is indeed an economic war going on here. And it’s one being waged by the Bolivarian socialists against the Venezuelan population. The tactic is simply to destroy the price system and thus the market. Given that non-market economies do not work this ensures the destruction of Venezuela’s economy.
What a mess. You can read about it or exchange Facebook messages with someone living in Venezuela. Of course, your friend in Venezuela will often go dark on you. This is because the lights go out and come back on at random.
What a sorry state of affairs down in Venezuela.

Good move by Governor Christie

hqdefault
You may recall the story of Joanne Chesimard.  A radical and violent leftist, She was convicted in the 1970’s of killing a New Jersey state trooper and then escaped to Cuba.
Joanne then became Assata Shakur and was granted political asylum in Cuba.  More than that, she became the darling of the revolution or the black woman who represented everything racist and evil about the US.  It was pathetic.
We are happy to see that Governor Christie wants to bring her to justice, as we read a couple of days ago:
In 2015, when then-President Barack Obama reopened relations between the United States and Cuba, there was hope that Chesimard would be returned to finish her life sentence. But she remains free today, even though the Obama administration said her return would be part of diplomatic negotiations with the communist regime.
Appearing Friday night on Fox News Channel’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Christie said “it’s outrageous” that Chesimard lives in freedom, and he pressed the administration of President Donald Trump to fight for her extradition to the U.S.
“I hope that what the Trump Administration is going to do is, before we take any further steps with a relationship with Cuba, that they say, ‘Listen, first and foremost, return this fugitive from justice back to New Jersey so that she can rightfully serve the rest of her term for murdering a police officer,'” said Christie, a friend and supporter of Trump.
“I think this is something that Secretary of State [Rex] Tillerson and others in the Trump Administration should make a top priority in any dealings they have with Cuba,” Christie added.
Indeed it should be a top priority!
The Chesimard case is exhibit A of everything that was wrong with President Obama’s deal with the Castro regime.
Unfortunately, the Obama team did not demand her release, or frankly demand anything at all.  it was simply a case of Mr. Obama desperately seeking a deal and not looking out for the US, or in this case a public official killed by a terrorist.
The Castro regime needs dollars and harboring this “oldie revolutionary” is of little value.  She means nothing today and should have been one of the many conditions that the Obama team put on the table.
Let’s hope that President Trump takes a different posture.   State Trooper Werner Foerster’s family deserves nothing less.

Repair Obamacare? Call on Dems to present their plan

For the record, I would have preferred for the GOP House pass an imperfect bill and move it to the US Senate.  It would have shown that we can govern and given Senator Cruz, Senator Lee, and a few others a chance to make the case for a full repeal as promised to voters.  It would also have forced many red-state Democrats to speak about it.  Last, but not least, President Trump would have had a victory.
Instead, we get to read Ezra Klein say the GOP cannot govern, or Democrats claiming victory, and so on and so on.
I love the Democrat who said the American people had voted to preserve their health insurance.  Can someone tell that Democrat that it was a group of GOP members who killed it because the proposal on the floor did not go far enough?  Demagoguery knows no bounds!
What happens now?
The Democrats won a short-term victory, indeed, but they set themselves up for a huge loss down the road.  In other words, it is still Obamacare after Friday’s vote, and it is not getting better.

Like a very sick patient, Obamacare will soon move to hospice and die.  We may call it the point of no return for a poorly designed plan that few Democrats had the courage to vote against in 2010.  (Maybe they were hoping Justice Roberts would kill it for them!)
A short time ago, we heard some pretty bad news about enrollment and the state of the plan:
The 2017 final figure, which updates a preliminary report released last month, was down from 12.7 million in 2016.
Furthermore, as the article points out:
Several major insurers have pulled out of the marketplace over the past year, citing losses from sicker-than-anticipated customers. Many insurers that remained increased premiums sharply this year.
What does President Trump do?
President Trump can just sit back and let Obamacare go bust.  This is tempting because it will force the Democrats to defend it.  Again, it is still called Obamacare after Friday’s no vote.
He could publicly call on Democrats to present ideas to “repair it,” as they say.  Let’s see how many of those ideas are nothing more than huge tax increases or more subsidies.  So far, the Democrats have had the benefit of defending Obamacare in the abstract.  Let’s call on Mrs. Pelosi and Mr. Schumer to tell us what they have in mind.  My guess is that they are not really looking forward to that.
There are no pretty options now.   Obamacare will implode, and Democrats will regret the day they didn’t work with Speaker Ryan to move something to the Senate, where they have more power.

Nuke the Senate Democrats and move on

Time will tell whether a qualified judge like Mr. Gorsuch can get 60 votes or not. Frankly, his résumé and experience should translate into 90-something votes.
Nevertheless, the Senate Democrats are under such pressure from the left that I am not optimistic that Mr. Gorsuch will get any votes from anyone with a “D” next to their name. Shame on red-state Democrats if Mr. Gorsuch can not get one of them to vote “yes”.
So let’s move and nuke the Senate Democrats.
I agree with Rebecca Berg that the nuclear option is very likely:
Democrats “are in no position to ask for any sort of a deal on anything,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, citing that change.

Even Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of the Republicans who has most stridently defended Senate filibuster rules, told RealClearPolitics that he would support the nuclear option to confirm Gorsuch.
“If they filibuster him, it means there’s nobody a Republican could pick that they could support. That means they’re telling Trump they don’t recognize him as president,” Graham said. “… I’m not going to play that game and let them use the traditions of the Senate when they choose to and grab power when they want to.”
The purists will try to defend the 60-vote rule. However, I am not alone in my frustration with this rule.
In theory, the 60-vote rule was intended to bring people together or create concensus. Instead, the 60-vote rule kept the U.S. Senate from voting one way or another on the Iran deal. It has made it impossible to approve good judges like Neil Gorsuch.
So nuke the Senate Democrats and move on.
