We remember Olivia de Havilland (1916-2020)

We remember Olivia De Havilland, one of the great actresses of Hollywood.   She was born in Tokyo, Japan, on July 1, 1916.    She died in 2020.

My two favorite roles were Marian in “The adventures of Robin Hood” and Melanie in “Gone with the wind”.    In total, she made many great movies.

Happy # 81 Deborah Harry

Angela Tremble was born on this day in 1945.    Later, Angela became Deborah Harry and Blondie and you know the rest of the story.    

She enjoyed a lot of success in the late 1970's and well into the 1980's.    They recorded some very good songs.

1863 and the battle of Gettysburg

We remember 1863 or another anniversary of The Battle of Gettysburg.

It was a horrific and brutal 3-day battle.  At the end, over 50,000 men died on that Pennsylvania field.

Today, we remember the valor on both sides.  

Professor Allen Guelzo has a nice column over at The Wall Street Journal about Gettysburg and what it meant to his grandfather:

"The Battle of Gettysburg ended 150 years ago. But the democratic principle it was fought for still requires defending. And in the long view, its best defense may be the 272 words Lincoln uttered at Gettysburg. My great-grandfather seems to have thought so, and so do I."

Yes, I agree with Professor Guelzo's great grandfather.  You never stop defending freedom or our democratic principles.

Joe DiMaggio made it to 44

Joe DiMaggio got # 43 & # 44 in a double header against Boston.   

He was now one behind Willie Keeler for the longest streak in the majors ever.

By the way, DiMaggio never bunted for a hit during the streak.
