Biden on The Twilight Zone
President Biden's speech was long and boring, and that's the best I can say about it. It got to the point that I was counting the number of times that Speaker Pelosi got up to applaud or how often VP Harris nodded her approval of whatever point he was making. By the way, was that Senator Joe Manchin in a corner hiding so that the people of West Virginia did not know he was there?
So who came up with "mask theater" or the idea of speaking to vaccinated members of Congress wearing masks? On one hand, he is telling us that his administration saved the day on COVID-19. On the other hand, he won't fill the House chambers to prove his point.
The speech bombed in style, or as the New York Post said:
President Biden’s speech Wednesday night failed on all counts: It didn’t sell his latest spending plan, it didn’t sell his larger agenda — and, worst of all, it didn’t sell him.
The bad news is that he did not address two major concerns.
First, what about gasoline prices? The AAA national average is $2.889. It was not long ago that we were paying about $2.00 in Texas and now I just paid $2.69, or over $30, to fill my tank.
Second, what about the border? I did not hear any solutions or update from Harris.
So the speech bombed. It did not sell his agenda. It's hard to believe that any GOP senator or member of the House will support it.

The NFL draft goes woke?
Maybe we shouldn't be surprised. After all, this is the same NFL that blessed professional athletes who disrespected the U.S. flag.
The latest from the "wokes" is their reaction to the NFL draft or the potential top choices about to be selected by teams.
Are the experts concerned about the character or talent of top college athletes? We used to do that but no more in the days of woke. The big deal this year is that the top quarterbacks are all white.
Check this out on ESPN:
When discussing White and Black quarterbacks on Tuesday, ESPN’s Max Kellerman took issue with the notion that the stock of a Black quarterback falls before the draft, specifically citing the rumors that Fields may not be a top one or two pick.
"I know it’s on my radar," the "First Take" co-host said. "Sometimes quarterbacks rise, sometimes they fall, but what I’ve noticed, in recent years after decades of artificial barriers being put in place for Black quarterbacks is that vis-a-vis White quarterbacks, Black quarterbacks in the draft tend to fall pre-draft.
Let me remind Mr. Kellerman that the stock of many college athletes falls before the draft. It's called competition or talent. What does any of this have to do with drafting the best college athlete for your NFL team?
Don't the Dallas Cowboys have a black quarterback who just signed a huge six-year contract?
Aren't there lots of black college quarterbacks coming up or others already playing in the NFL? I checked and 10 black quarterbacks started the last season? I remember when Doug Williams made history as the first black quarterback to win the 1989 Super Bowl. It sounds to me like some blacks are making it to the NFL rather than the opposite.
Once again, we see people in the sports media obsessed with skin color. It's all about the color of your skin with these people. And then they call us "racist" when we question their obsession with race.

Watching VP Harris avoid the U.S.-Mexico border reminds me of that song by Sandie Shaw from the golden age of Top 40 radio:
"You wanna see her

Yes, Madam Vice President is everywhere but down here.
Maybe this is one of the reasons why she is not playing well with the American public. This is from Paul Bedard:
America is not quite there yet on Vice President Kamala Harris, with a sizable number viewing her unfavorably and the nation overall split on her becoming the first female president.
In the latest Rasmussen Reports survey, 50% have an unfavorable view of her. And most, 43% expressed a “very unfavorable” opinion, a sour note to her debut on the world stage as she addresses the United Nations on Monday concerning the global coronavirus crisis.
Rasmussen noted that a majority of likely voters do not believe that she is qualified to take over for President Joe Biden. But the nation is split on the question. Some 50% said that she is not qualified, and 46% did.
To be fair, many Americans did not think that VP Quayle was ready to replace President Bush and VP Gore did not exactly come to town with a lot of foreign affairs experience.
Furthermore, the public may simply be confirming the political divide. Did anyone hear that we are divided electorate?
VP Harris does have image problems and she showed it during the primaries. She is not likeable and seems afraid to tackle an issue that is hurting President Biden. I hope that VP Harris understands that it is a Biden-Harris issue and not one that she can dump on her boss or bureaucrats.
According to the poll, voters are expecting VP Harris to play a major role in the Biden administration. Unfortunately, she is doing a lot of Zoom calls but has not had one, in person or virtually, with anyone down at the border.

They had a big event on TV last night called the Oscars. Well, as Bill Clinton would say, it depends what the definition of "big event" is. Is it really a big event if nobody watched it?
According to the early numbers, no one did. Yes, that sound you heard last night was Americans flipping channels or turning off their sets. By the way, I did hear a few neighbors cutting their grass last night. Maybe they waited until the evening because it's cooler. Or maybe they were voting with their "lawn movers" and rejecting the Oscars. I don't know, but it was interesting.
This is from Newsalert:
Last night’s Oscars viewership was down over 50% off last year’s numbers, which were the worst ever.
In 2020 the show did a 18.1/32.
This year? 8.6/18.
Yikes. Get woke, go broke. Absolute disaster for Hollywood.
Okay, I don't follow TV ratings for a living. Nevertheless, "disaster" may be appropriate. How many more viewers can you lose before you don't have any?
So what's going on? A family friend mentioned over lunch yesterday that she had not seen any of the movies under consideration. Another gentleman said that he just hates Hollywood. Wonder how many millions he represents?
It's simple Marketing 101 for me. You can't reach most Americans if you spend the entire show telling viewers how rotten they are or how terrible the country is. Sooner or later, you will insult the customer and he or she will watch something else.

Portland's mayor should resign first
The invoice is coming and it's going to be big. Last summer, cities, from Portland to Minneapolis let mobs destroy their buildings and even kill police officers for no reason at all. The political class backed down and did not protect their citizens and businesses from criminals who used George Floyd's death as an excuse to burn and destroy. It was a pathetic display of weakness and irresponsibility.
Well, Trump is gone and reality is hitting everyone between the eyes. It's now time to clean up and do whatever they can to recover. It will be hard because the taxpayers are not going to buy the kiss and make up line.
Portland is a good example of how to destroy a city, as we see in this report:
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler called Friday for the city’s residents to assist authorities in their efforts to "unmask" members of the "self-described anarchist mob" who have engaged in acts of violence and vandalism in recent months. The Democrat extended a state of emergency in Portland through Monday amid concerns about potential unrest following the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer found guilty on all charges for the death of George Floyd. The Portland mayor asked the public to come forward with any information on members of the anarchist group. "The city is beginning to recover, but self-described anarchists who engage in regular criminal destruction don’t want things to open up, to recover," Wheeler said. "They want to prevent us from doing the work of making a better Portland for everyone. They want to burn, they want to bash."
Mayor Wheeler is a disgrace. He should resign, along with the entire city council, and call on adults to come in and straighten things out.
Mayor Wheeler, and the absolutely worthless Governor Kate Brown, who did nothing, will face three problems:
First, the taxpayers are angry;
Second, the business owners (a.k.a. job creators) are in no mood to hear from a mayor who did not protect them; and last but not least,
Third, who wants to be a police officer in any of those cities?
So goodbye Portland, Seattle, et al. This is what happens when you let Trump Derangement Syndrome and the 1619 Project guide you over the cliff.

How much farther to go before woke Coke hits rock bottom?
Maybe we should call it "the pause that doesn't refresh" anymore. At least, a lot of people are saying that as they overlook Coke for something else. This is the latest from the long list of companies who listen to "the wokes" in H.R. rather than the customers who keep them in business. Check this out:
Mere weeks after going public with stern words about the new election law in Georgia, Coca-Cola has become far more muted in its corporate bellowing. Now, we know why. A new poll has come out to show more than pushback from select citizens has taken place; there is widespread rejection of the company's bold pronouncement, becoming just the latest in a growing list of companies who have suffered self-imposed, negative PR.
What a bunch of sissies, if I'm still allowed to use that word in this cancel culture.
First, they don't read the law and go on TV to repeat the talking points that the wokes gave them. Second, they run away when the cash registers stop ringing.
The question is, why do they do it? Nobody consumes a soft drink to endorse or reject a political idea. We have elections and debates to do that. We consume this or that because we like it and not much more.
When will the shareholders rise? I guess they will when the next quarterly earnings come in and their checks are a little smaller.
Once upon a time, I took business courses in school and learned that a company's mission is to make the best product or offer the best service in the market.
As Peter Drucker wrote: "The purpose of business is to create and keep a customer."
Let's just say some of our best paid CEOs are failing miserably to remember Mr. Drucker's wisdom.

President Bush should have known better
In my book, President George W. Bush was the right man on the job when we got hit by terrorists in 2001. He fought back, took out Saddam, and left the country safer than he found it. Over the past day, President Bush took back some of his remarks about the GOP. This is from Fox News:
Really what I should have said -- there's loud voices who are isolationists, protectionists and nativists, something, by the way, I talked about when I was president," Bush told People. "My concerns [are] about those -isms."
Bush continued, "I painted with too broad a brush... because by saying what I said, it excluded a lot of Republicans who believe we can fix the problem."
Yes you did, Mr. President.
What surprises me is that President Bush did not see the questions coming. He should have known that the media only cares about what he has to say about President Trump. In other words, they don't care that he opposes amnesty or open borders. All they want to hear is something critical about President Trump.
President Bush's book is apparently about immigrants who came here and made huge contributions to the country. I've never heard a single GOP candidate question that or say that immigrants do not contribute to the nation. In fact, the 2020 election gave us a new GOP congresswoman born in Ukraine and two Cuban Americans from Florida.
Caution, President Bush, and the same applies to Senator Romney. Be careful with the interviews. The person asking you the questions voted for Biden and just wants you to criticize President Trump.

The Democrats created the mess
No matter how the jury decides the Chauvin case, it's interesting to hear Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota say this:
"We can’t live like this," he said. "We simply can’t. But we can’t have thousands of businesses burned and people put at risk."
The governor is correct but nine months late. Imagine if had said that last May when the police station was destroyed? Maybe businesses would not have been burned or many people put a risk?
What we are watching is the direct consequence of Democrat politicians who exploited the riots to hurt President Trump.
Many of us saw the riots in Minneapolis and did not understand why Walz waited as long as he did or tolerated so much violence. We saw buildings burn and Democrats making excuses for the looters.
Now, Walz and the mayors of these blue cities are living with the consequences, as Kyle Smith wrote:
The balance of cities, already hit by a fiscal hurricane because of the duration of the lockdown, will tip toward heavy consumers of government services and away from high earners. Cities will be forced to raise taxes. The taxes on high earners and corporations will seem punitive. Even more of them will flee as taxes go up. The things successful people like about cities, such as high-end restaurants and culture, will follow them out to the suburbs. Corporate office parks in the suburbs will see a resurgence.
People who stop commuting into cities will lose interest in them and their institutions. They will lose interest in funding cities. This will worsen the fiscal problems for the cities.
Cities will lose congressional seats. Federal funding will be steered away accordingly.
Voters left behind in cities will be a combination of the indigent, immigrants working in low-end jobs, the young, and the woke. These people will vote for a hard-left agenda focusing on aid to the poor, forgiveness for criminals, hatred of the rich, and boutique woke issues such as global warming that will push the Democratic Party well to the left.
In other words, the demonstrators and rioters are going to remake the cities in their own image. And it’s going to be disastrous for those cities.
Yes, the "donut hole" will get bigger. It will be almost impossible for these city governments to attract business relocations because the new arrivals would rather live in Frisco than Dallas, as we see here in Texas. The middle class will get out and the poor left behind will attend worse and worse schools. The streets will look like the surface of the moon, exactly as I felt driving in Dallas with potholes so big that I was afraid of losing my car. Last, but not least, it will be impossible to attract new recruits to the police force.
So thank you Governor Walz for realizing that "we can't live this." It would have been a lot better if you had said that the night that the first fire bomb was thrown in Minneapolis.

It's time for a serious Democrat to call for Waters' resignation
Once upon a time, there was Senator Joe Lieberman speaking out against President Clinton on the floor of the U.S. Senate. It was 23 years ago but it seems a lot longer than that. Or what about that incident from 1992 known now as Bill Clinton's Sister Souljah moment. In both instances, a Democrat was willing to challenge his party.
No one in today's Democrat Party has the backbone or the willingness to take on another Democrat, especially Representative Maxine Waters. The lady from California took recklessness and irresponsibility to another zone with her latest remarks:
Asked about the Chauvin murder trial in nearby Minneapolis, Waters told reporters if the former police officer isn't found guilty of murdering Floyd, "We've got to stay on the street and we've got to get more active, we've got to get more confrontational. We've got to make sure that they know that we mean business."
Waters said she was "hopeful" Chauvin would be convicted of murder, but if he isn't, "we cannot go away."
I remember when remarks like that would have at least prompted her hometown's newspaper to call for a resignation. Furthermore, the party leadership would have told her to cut it out and get back to work. What we have here is a member of Congress threatening a jury or inspiring the mob if they don't like the verdict.
I guess that was then and this is now. Today's Democrat Party is run by people who think that everything is about race or whining about the police. They don't seem to understand that people will get hurt when you speak this way.

Can you blame Raúl for leaving?
According to news reports, Cuba's chief, Raúl Castro, is resigning and passing the ball to the younger generation. This is from NBC News:
Raul Castro confirmed Friday he is stepping down as the head of the Communist Party of Cuba, the most powerful position on the island.
During a speech on the first day of the Communist Party's eighth congress, he said he would hand over power to a younger generation that is "full of passion and anti-imperialist spirit."
"I believe fervently in the strength and exemplary nature and comprehension of my compatriots, and as long as I live, I will be ready with my foot in the stirrups to defend the fatherland, the revolution and socialism," Castro told party delegates at the closed-door meeting at a convention center in Havana. He was retiring, Castro said, with the sense of having "fulfilled his mission and confident in the future of the fatherland."
And so he will step down.
Some in the media are treating this as some "Washington moment," or when President Washington decided not to seek a third term in 1796. Well, not really. President Washington retired after being elected for two terms. Raúl Castro was never elected to anything, unless you think running unopposed for head of the Communist Party is some kind of model election.
So what's going on?
Let's cut him a little slack and say he is old. Yes, he will be 90 in a few months. Let's accept that the absence of a Castro is historic.
My guess is that Raúl Castro knows that this is a good time to get out because the island is facing some difficult times.
COVID has hit Cuba hard and cut into tourism, the only thing the island has to bring in dollars. Once upon a time, Cuba had a private economy. It doesn't anymore, so tourism is about all they have. COVID stopped those flights full of tourists, and the economy shrank 11% last year. Thanks to President Trump, U.S. sanctions have made it more difficult for Cuba's regime. And finally, long food lines and shortages are back, reminding my mother of those days when she stood in line to buy milk.
To make matters worse, the new leaders want to reform, but the Cuban version of Perestroika will probably work as well as the Soviet one from the late 1980s.
So Raul is handing the keys to the new generation. The problem is that the engine does not run, the gas tank is empty, the car needs new tires, and there are still lots of payments due on that note.
Do you understand now why Raúl wants out?
