Olympics? Brazilians are busy with politics!

(My new American Thinker post)

The Olympics start next Friday.  We trust that everything goes well, although there are many reasons to worry, from crime to infrastructure to even terrorism.  Let's hope that the accomplishments of the athletes, and nothing else, is the big story from Rio.

On the political front, Brazilians are watching one amazing telenovela.  The latest is about Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the former president of Brazil who is now a target of the investigation over bribery at Petrobras, the oil monopoly.

This is from The New York Times:
Lawyers for Mr. da Silva said in a statement that he was innocent of the obstruction charges, saying that he had “never interfered” in the Petrobras investigation.
The charges stem from testimony by Delcídio do Amaral, a former senator in the Workers’ Party who was arrested in November after he was heard in a secret recording describing an elaborate plan for Nestor Cerveró, a former Petrobras executive ensnared in the scandal, to flee Brazil on a private plane.
We will follow the events and see where the trial goes.  In the short run, there are a couple of problems:

1) Lula, as he is known by supporters, was planning to run for president in 2018.  Obviously, his plans will have to wait for the determination of this trial.

2) Brazil's political system has been exposed as one gigantic case of crony capitalism.

3) All of this political bickering is making Brazilians even more cynical about their politicians.  After all, it wasn't long ago that Lula was the darling of most citizens, in part because of the economic boom that coincided with his two terms.  Like President Clinton, President Lula had some rather amazing good timing when it came to economic growth.

Lula's out of luck.  He now faces real charges of corruption, as well as a public furious with the economic slowdown.

So let's hope the Olympics goes well, because politics isn't!

Mr Kaine: Those GDP ‘numeros son muy malo’

We learned that VP nominee Senator Kaine can handle Spanish conversation. He can certainly pander in Spanish. He became the latest Democrat to ask for Hispanic votes by promising immigration reform. The last one was Senator Obama in 2008 — and how did that turn out?
Wonder if he is going to explain the latest GDP numbers in Spanish? My guess is that’s one Spanish speech that we won’t hear. The latest GDP numbers are “malo, horrible, terrible” and whatever other Spanish word that comes to my mind.
This is from Fox News:
Gross domestic product increased at a 1.2 percent annual rate after rising by a downwardly revised 0.8 percent pace in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said on Friday.
The economy was previously reported to have grown at a 1.1 percent pace in the first quarter.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast GDP growth rising at a 2.6 percent rate in the last quarter.
Once again, the economists were surprised that it was lower than anticipated. Another report and another round of economists who expected a better number. Maybe these are the same economists who’ve been advising Jerry Jones on Cowboys’ draft picks since their last Super Bowl visit in 1996!
We heard a lot about history made in Philadelphia. Yes, a lot of history was made indeed.
I think that this is the first that a presidential nominee had GDP numbers like this the day after the speech.
As for Mr. Kaine, I’ll be happy to write his Spanish speech about this economy. He won’t like it, but it will tell Hispanics that their investment in Obama left them with nothing but a broken “si se puede” vinyl record.

How about James Shields for the Rangers rotation?

The Rangers are looking to add another starter for the pennant stretch.   How about James Shields currently with Chicago White Sox?   Here are some reasons:

1) He is not a rental.   He will be here in 2017;

2) He's pitched a lot of innings:   2, 235 innings, 132 wins, 1,928 Ks over 11 seasons.

3) You can probably get Shields without giving up Gallo or Profar; and,

4) Shields pitched with Tampa and KC in the post season.

So who knows what will  happen this weekend?   I'm sure that GM Daniels and others are working the phone.

Shields and another bullpen arm will help Texas.

PC and ‘taco bowl outreach’

racism-cartoon

Once upon in a time, no one in the U.S. would have gotten all worked up about reading that a DNC staffer referred to the Hispanic effort as “taco bowl outreach“.
Most people would have filed those remarks under the “silly” file or just a couple of staffers trying to be funny or whatever. No one would have concluded that there was a racial connotation to any of this.
Furthermore, no one would have been outraged at Mr. Trump eating a taco salad on “Cinco de Mayo”.
Or that Speaker Ryan was making a demographic statement with a selfie surrounded by interns.
Unfortunately, we are now reaping the world that the left and PC have created. It is a messy world, not a better one.
Not long ago, I read an article by comedian John Cleese about how PC was killing comedy:
Monty Python member John Cleese has become the latest comedy legend to wade into the shark-infested waters that is the debate over political correctness in comedy.
In a video for commentary website Big Think, Cleese warns that over sensitivity from political correctness is hurting comedy and could lead to a society where free expression is not allowed.
Cleese lays out a theory that “all comedy is critical,” in that it in some way comments or passes judgment on something the joke-teller observes, and therefore whoever is being judged by the joke could feel offended by it.
Cleese objects to offended parties trying to regulate other peoples’ thoughts and behaviors, as that leads to a culture where ideas are not allowed to be freely exchanged and dissent is suppressed.
Cleese says that he’s been warned against performing at colleges, because it’s on university campuses in particular where “the political correctness has been taken from being a good idea, which is ‘Let’s not be mean in particular to people who are not able to look after themselves very well,’ to the point where any kind of criticism of any individual or group could be labeled cruel.”
And so true that it is.
As the song goes: “Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end….”
Unfortunately, they’ve ended and we are not better off. We are now living in a culture where people are literally afraid of saying something about a person of a different race for fear of being called a racist. HR departments have bosses and supervisors tangled up in bureaucratic verbiage to avoid turning a review into a civil rights case.
That’s not improvement. That’s a disaster that will lead to less talk, less understanding and a heck of a lot less laughter.

Why is Hillary Clinton so unpopular? She's a liar!

Mrs Clinton will accept the Democrat nomination tonight.    Nevertheless, the question is the same:   Why is this woman so unpopular?

According to Gallup, Mrs Clinton is more unpopular than ever:
As the Democratic National Convention gets underway in Philadelphia, Hillary Clinton's image is at its lowest point in the 24 years of her national career, with 38% of Americans viewing her favorably and 57% unfavorably.
Americans' most positive view of Clinton, 67% favorable, came in December 1998.
Before last year, her lowest favorable ratings since she became well-known had been 43% in January 1996 and 44% in March 2001.
So why is this woman so unpopular?    The answer is that she lacks integrity.   She showed tremendous disregard for her office by using a personal server as Secretary of State.   Finally, she is a liar.

Why are we blaming Putin for being Putin?

The latest distraction from the Democrats who wrote about their "taco bowl" outreach is to blame Putin for hacking the DNC emails.

Without question, Putin is a jerk and looking out for himself or Russia. Like any other adversary, he is spying, or hacking on the U.S.

It probably didn't help when we conveyed weakness by allowing Russian MiGs to fly over our aircraft carriers. In other words, bullies like Putin learn early that there are no consequences to their thuggish behavior.

As Scott Shackford wrote:
Putin may or may not have played some role in the hacking of the DNC, and certainly it's proper that the government investigate and track down who is responsible.
But neither Putin nor Russian hackers are responsible for the way the party treated Sanders and its supporters.
And this attempt to quickly deflect the subject matter over to Trump and Putin has the side effect (intentional or not) of again dismissively treating Sanders and his supporters' concerns as largely irrelevant to the establishment.
Then there is also the server issue, as Michael Leeden wrote:
The penetration of the DNC is almost certainly part of the larger story of Hillary’s use of an insecure private server. That server was apparently first discovered when “Guccifer” penetrated Sidney Blumenthal’s email account. He had many exchanges with Hillary, and Guccifer found them. That led him to Hillary.
And once you’re in Hillary’s server, you can be sure that there are links to the DNC.
So what happened? We learned that Democrats use ethnic jokes when they communicate with each other. And that Mrs. Clinton made it all possible by having a private server!

I guess it's enough to drive a Democrat crazy, specially those who keep saying that this Clinton email scandal is much to do about nothing!

Three songs about a girl named Ruby!

What's a Ruby:

"Ruby, precious gemstone that occurs as a red, transparent variety of the mineral corundum."

Just saw this the other day:

It's funny.  I like that name a lot, too.  We don't any daughters.  However, I would have campaigned to have her named Ruby.

These are 3 examples of songs named after a girl named Ruby.

Each Ruby is a very different character, a girl with a different personality.

The first one is "Ruby Baby" from Dion in the early 1960s. We call this one sweet Ruby:

"Ah now said I love a girl and-a Ruby is her nameThis girl don't love me but I love 'er just the same(Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh),
Ruby, Ruby, I'm-a want yaLike a ghost
I'm-a gonna haunt yaRuby, Ruby, Ruby will you be mine?,
sometime Ah each time I see you,
baby my heart criesI tell ya I'm gonna steal you away from all those guysWhoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, from the happy day I met yaNow I made a bet that I was goin' to get yaRuby, Ruby, Ruby will you be mine?"Hey-hey " (Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, baby)"Hey-hey"
(Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, baby)"Hey-hey"
(Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, baby)"Hey-hey"(Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, baby)["Hey-hey"
Now I love this girl I said-a Ruby is her nameWhen this girl looks at me she just sets my soul aflameWhoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, I got some hugs and-a kisses, tooYeah and now I'm gonna give-a them all to youNow, listen, now Ruby, Ruby, when will you be mine?"

The second is "Ruby Tuesday", the elusive character that inspired one of The Rolling Stones' very best tunes:

"She would never say where she came fromYesterday dont matter if its goneWhile the sun is brightOr in the darkest nightNo one knows She comes and goesGoodbye, ruby tuesdayWho could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new dayStill Im gonna miss you...Dont question why she needs to be so freeShell tell you its the only way to beShe just cant be chainedTo a life where nothings gainedAnd nothings lost At such a costTheres no time to lose, I heard her sayCatch your dreams before they slip awayDying all the timeLose your dreamsAnd you will lose your mind.Aint life unkind?
Goodbye, ruby tuesdayWho could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new dayStill Im gonna miss you..."

The third is Kenny Rogers' "Ruby", a young woman who is hard to keep at home:

"You've painted up your lipsAnd rolled and curled your tinted hairRuby are you contemplatingGoing out somewhereThe shadow on the wallTells me the sun is going downOh Ruby Don't take your love to townIt wasn't me That started that old crazy Asian warBut I was proud to goAnd do my patriotic choreAnd yes, it's true that I'm not the man I used to beOh, Ruby I still need some companyIts hard to love a man Whose legs are bent and paralysedAnd the wants and the needs of a woman your age Ruby I realize,But it won't be long i've heard them say until I not aroundOh Ruby Don't take your love to townShe's leaving now causeI just heard the slamming of the doorThe way I know I've heard it slam 100 times beforeAnd if I could move I'd get my gunAnd put her in the groundOh RubyDon't take your love to townOh Ruby for God's sake turn around"

Did anyone say ISIS?

My guess is that Mrs. Clinton knows that she’s going to disappoint much of her party if she wins. In other words, the next president will have to fight the war against terrorists with a lot more energy and aggresiveness than President Obama did. Incredibly, President Obama has been allowed to kick the can forward and leave all of this to his successor.
The Democrat convention is all about turning Trump into a racist and sexist monster. Unfortunately, the real monster who just killed a priest in France was overlooked
Some delegates are defending the lack of ISIS saying that there is a theme nightly and terror was not on Monday’s agenda, as Tyler Pager explained:
“Based on our searches of C-SPAN closed-captioning text, Congressional Quarterly transcripts and other video archiving services, we couldn’t find any speaker who mentioned “ISIS,” “Islamic” “terror,” “terrorist,” or “terrorism” during the first day of the convention,” Politifact wrote.
The fact-checking website did add the caveat that the Democrats still have three days to discuss terrorism at the convention and the first day of the convention was not meant to focus on foreign policy.
Additionally, Hillary Clinton on Monday called for action against ISIL at a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“We need to lead other countries in stopping ISIS, Al Qaeda, and other radical jihadist groups,” she said. “We shouldn’t leave that to the rest of the world to figure out on their own. That won’t keep us safe.”
Frankly, I don’t buy this nonsense about scheduling. I think that Democrats have concluded that their delegates would rather hear about free tutition than the threat of ISIS.
Let me say it again. Democrats are going to be very disappointed when # 45 has to go after ISIS, and that means ground troops. Mrs. Clinton has to know that and her anti-war pandering to the left is reckless and irresponsible.
The Democratic Party is in a state of denial. They should read today’s Telegraph editorial about Germany:
Western democracies are now frequently experiencing political events that were previously considered unthinkable, at least by their political elites.
If there is a common theme to Brexit, the candidacy of Donald Trump and the rise of the Front National in France, it is that political establishments which ignore and ridicule voters’ concerns about issues including immigration and cultural cohesion are simply storing up trouble for the future.
Such concerns do not go away just because politicians refuse to acknowledge them, instead erupting unpredictably.
To avoid these eruptions, those worries must be addressed sensibly and calmly by mainstream politicians..
And the threat of ISIS is not going away either because we engage in silly arguments about motives or whether the killer was or was not radicalized.

Sanders has 19,252 reasons to take back his endorsement

(My new American Thinker post)

Am I the only that was surprised by the lack of protests in Cleveland? I was expecting a massive clash with the police but nothing really happened.   Let's give the police credit for their overwhelming presence and organization. However, the protests did not show up. Wonder why?

It looks like the protesters got on the Philadelphia bus instead, as we read in the Wall Street Journal:
At a lively Sunday march in support of former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, chants of “lock her up,” “Hillary for Prison” signs and t-shirts and calls for indictment were common among the most ardent supporters of Mr. Sanders, who arrived in Philadelphia to make their voices heard to the delegates attending the Democratic National Convention.
To be fair, maybe this is just a coincidence and protests won't be an issue at the DNC.

We will soon find out.

We may have seen a glimpse of the future when Mrs. Wasserman-Schultz got booed Monday morning.

Some are even saying that Vladimir Putin is behind the leak! Again, I don't know but that would be interesting and could throw the Clinton campaign into even more disarray. What else does Mr. Putin know about Mrs. Clinton? Her State Department emails? The Clinton Foundation?

The anger on the Democrat side is real and the media may be forced to finally deal with it. The anger on the GOP side was personal, such as the Trump-Cruz feud. The anger on the Democrat side is about corruption, or a political party that is nothing but a subsidiary of The Clinton Foundation.

The Sanders people have an honest complaint here. As they say in the streets, Sanders got screwed!

The emails show that the DNC was committed to Mrs. Clinton all the way, from debates during the NFL championship games to Saturday nights when people were holiday shopping.

The emails were even discussing Sanders' religion!

So it's up to Sanders to save the party from the Clinton corruption and to stand up for the millions who felt the "bern" or even others like me who want clean politics.
Sanders won't do it, but he needs to stand up, call out this corruption and withdraw his support for Clinton.

Sanders cannot in good faith take this sleaze without destroying the genuine quality of his campaign or expect the millions who voted for him to go home happy.

Ted Cruz said "vote your conscience". Sanders should say, vote to clean up this party!

Wonder what emails Wikileaks will release next?

(My new American Thinker post)

The Democrats got an unfriendly welcome the day before their convention. It looks like Wikileaks did it again:
The DNC, which is chaired by Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, has acknowledged that their systems were infiltrated. The party has not commented on specific information released through the hack.
According to Wikileaks, which is operated by Julian Assange, the release is “part one” of a new series it is calling “Hillary Leaks.”
The emails come from the accounts of seven DNC officials: communications director Luis Miranda, national finance director Jordon Kaplan, finance chief of staff Scott Comer, finance director of data and strategic initiatives Daniel Parrish, finance director Allen Zachary, senior advisor Andrew Wright and Northern California Finance Director and the finance director for northern California, Robert Stowe.
The emails range in date from Jan. 2015 to May 25 of this year.
Bad day for the Democrats, specially the obvious heavyhanded effort to nominate Mrs. Clinton at any cost. These emails should make every Sanders supporter very angry. It's obvious that the umpire in this game was looking out for Clinton.

My question is this: what do they release on Thursday, the day that Clinton delivers the acceptance speech? I don't know but there is probably a little panic over at the Clinton headquarters.

Over the last year, we've heard about these missing emails, the server, and a lot of other stuff that smells bad, with all due respect to Director James Comey.

Could it be that Julian Assange has the missing emails and plans to drop them on the front pages?

Again, I don't know but it could be the big story of the week.

After all, the afformentioned article threatens that more emails are coming.

Can someone tell Mr. Trump that the media is with Mrs. Clinton?

The Cruz-Trump controversy came back on Friday, the day after Mr. Trump's great speech, when a member of the media asked a question about his feud with Senator Cruz.

Mr. Trump went on to explain that he was simply talking about a National Enquirer article.

Question:   What is a presidential candidate doing talking about a National Enquirer story?  It may be true that The National Enquirer has published some truth in the past.  However, they've also published a lot of rumors!

Solution:  Mr. Trump should learn how to say "no comment, next question."  He gains nothing from letting the media drag him into these controversies.
In other words, Mr. Trump does not have to answer every question, especially from a media that would rather see Hillary Clinton win the election.

Trust me, the news media is not going to be hitting her with questions about Director Comey's comments about carelessness!

Heck she doesn't do press conferences!

Over the next 90 days, the media will spend much of its time reporting on the GOP's divisions and largely overlook the problems on the other side.  Does Mr. Trump understand that?

During Thursday's speech, we saw a disciplined candidate outlining his goals and laying out the nation's problems.  It was great because there was substance.

On Friday, we saw a bit of the Trump that scares many of us, or the undisciplined candidate who thinks that he has to answer every question.

The pre-Trump speech polling data shows a dead heat.   Mr. Trump seems to be gaining on Mrs. Clinton.

Why is he trending up?  The answer is two-fold:

First, Mrs. Clinton is as flawed as flawed can be.  She faces an angry left that will probably stay home rather than vote for her.  Her positions are all over the map, if a candidate can point that out.

Second, Mr. Trump has been talking issues.
2016 is going to be a lot like 2004, i.e. a national security election.  In 2004, voters selected Mr. Bush because they thought that he'd protect the country better than Mr. Kerry.

In 2016, voters will have to make a similar decision. Or which one of these candidates has the toughness to destroy ISIS and go after these terrorist cells?

My guess is that they will select Trump, unless he keeps talking about The National Enquirer and Ted Cruz's father.
