"Wonderful summer": The girls loved this very popular summer song!

This is Robin Ward's "Wonderful summer".

It's a classic summer love song. It is also one of the few summer songs recorded by a female vocalist.

Robin Ward is one of the greatest "one hit wonders" in pop music.

Who was Robin Ward? We don't know much about her but she did record one of the most "girly" summer songs ever!

And the girls love this song:

"I want to thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life
It was so heavenly
You meant the world to me
And anyone could see that I was so in love
I want to thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life
I never will forget That summer day we met
You were so shy and yet you stole my heart away
We strolled along the sand Walking hand in hand
Then you kissed me and I knew
That I would love you my whole life through
I want to thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life
And though it broke my heart
That day we had to part
I'll always thank you for giving me
The most wonderful summer of my life" (lyrics)

"Surfer Girl" is just right for the first sign of summer!

Welcome to what really feels like the first week of summer.  I love Beach Boys songs about summer.  They are fantastic.

As I mentioned, Brian Wilson is a superb songwriter, arranger and pop music vocalist.

What do we listen to this year for our first song of summer song?  "California Girls"? "Surfin' USA"?  "The warmth of the sun"? "Surfin' Safari"?

I will pick "Surfer girl" this year and I hope that you like it as much as I do:

"Little surfer little one Made my heart come all undone
Do you love me, do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
I have watched you on the shore Standing by the ocean's roar
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl surfer girl
We could ride the surf together
While our love would grow
In my Woody I would take you everywhere I go
So I say from me to you
I will make your dreams come true
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well Girl surfer girl my little surfer girl
Well...."

Summer songs: Junior Walker's "What does it take"!

It's one of my all time favorite songs!  They are one of my favorite groups.

I'm talking about Jr Walker's "What does it take", a tune from school days and from the golden era of AM Top 40 radio.

He recorded other hits like "Shotgun", a great version of "These eyes" and some good albums. They sound better with age.

"What does it take" is still my favorite. I will add it to my I-Pod whenever I get one:
"What does it take (What does it take)To win your love for me? (To win your love for me)How can I make (How can I make)This dream come true for me? (Had a dream for you)Whoa, I just got to know (Have to know)
Ooo, baby 'cause I love you so'
Gonna blow for you'I tried, I tried, I tried, I tried In every way I could (Anyway I could)To make you see how much I love you (See how much I love you)Woo!I thought you understood (Thought you understood)So, you gotta make me see (Make me see)
What does it take To win your love for me?"

Had not heard "12:30" in a long time!

The Mamas and Papas were a very popular quartet many summers ago.

From left to right: Denny Doherty, Cass Elliott, a.k.a. Mama Cass, Michelle and John Phillips, the tall one with the hat! (Michelle is the only surviving member of the group. Cass died accidentally. Denny and John died of cancer recently!)

John Phillips wrote most of their big songs. They had hits like "California Dreamin" and "Monday Monday".

However, my favorite was always "12:30":

"I used to live in New York City
Every thing there was dark and dirty
Outside my window was a steeple
With a clock that always said 12:30
Young girls are coming to the canyon
And in the morning I can see them walking
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn
And I cant keep myself from talking.
At first so strange to feel so friendly
To say good morning and really mean it
To feel these changes happening in me
But not to notice till I feel it.
Young girls are coming to the canyon
And in the morning I can see them walking
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn
And I cant keep myself from talking.
Cloudy waters cast no reflection
Images of beauty lie there stagnant
Vibrations bounce in no direction
And lie there shattered into fragments.
Young girls are coming to the canyon
And in the morning I can see them walking
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn
And I cant keep myself from talking."

The Critters and "Younger girl"

The Critters were young guys from New Jersey.

Like many youngsters, they played rock in their garage and dreamed of a recording contract.

Eventually, their persistence was rewarded. They got a contract and recorded a couple of the nicest pop tunes ever.

The group had a wonderful sound.    Here is John Sebastian's "Younger girl" and "Mr. Diengly sad", their second best seller!
