Wendy Davis has a 'problema con el aborto' in South Texas

(My new American Thinker post)

This is really the most amazing fact to come out of our Texas primary.  It did not get a lot of attention on election night.
It is really starting to get notice thanks to Michael Barone:
"Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis handily won the Democratic primary for governor last week, but her support of late-term abortions cost her the Hispanic vote, Michael Barone says.
The senior political analyst at the Washington Examiner said in his column that even though Davis won by 79 percent to 21 percent over Reynaldo "Ray" Madrigal, a virtual unknown who spent little or no money, she lost 26 of Texas' 254 counties, mostly heavily  Hispanic areas in the Rio Grande Valley.
By comparison, 17 of those counties voted for President Barack Obama in 2012, he noted.
"These numbers point to the conclusion that Davis' stand on the abortion issue, wildly popular among the Democrats' feminist left, is significantly unpopular among many Texas Hispanic voters — most of them probably Catholic, but including a significant number of evangelical and Pentecostal Protestants," Barone wrote.
"National Democratic strategists may hope that Davis can build a Texas majority on a feminist-black-Hispanic base. But that Hispanic base looks shaky. What enthuses one part of a party's constituency can antagonize another part."
Unfortunately, we were so busy with all of the "Tea Party" stories that everybody was looking at other results.

My guess is that the Davis campaign must be having a hard time with it. How do you continue to be the candidate of Planned Parenthood and get Hispanic women in South Texas to vote for you?

To be fair, this is not a plain abortion debate. Senator Wendy Davis' filibuster was about abortion at 20 weeks, a far more controversial position than your typical pro-choice stance.

Ms. Davis needs to pitch a perfect game to defeat Mr. Abbott.  So far, she is given up 2 runs in the first inning and the bases are still loaded!

Hard to feel sympathy for Democrats who didn't read or understand Obama Care

(My new American Thinker post)

The Florida election confirms that ObamaCare is a problem for Democrats no matter how much we hear that Mrs Sink "sank" for other reasons. It will be really hard to blame this on the Koch brothers!

The Democrats have two problems in 2014.

The first one is cyclical, as Josh Kraushaar reminds us:
"The results are a clear warning sign to Senate Democrats, whose majority is threatened thanks to a Republican-friendly map and a national environment that's tilted in the GOP's favor. At least seven Democratic-held Senate seats are being contested in states more conservative than the Florida House battleground. Conservative groups, led by Americans for Prosperity, are already airing ads blasting Democratic senators for their support of Obamacare, and their attacks have negatively impacted the incumbents' poll numbers."
The second problem is just plain bad governance, or the often mentioned 'they didn't read the bill" complaint.

In other words, not a single Democrat stood up in 2009 and said: Stop in the name of common sense!  Stop and let's make sure that we understand this massive bill!

Why didn't a single Democrat do that?

My guess is that they were afraid to challenge the first black president and risk the ire of blacks in their state.

My second guess is that they all bet on Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts voting "no" rather than "yes".

Either way, they are stuck with a law and all of its unintended consequences.

However, I don't feel sorry for any of them.  This is what happens when you don't understand or read something you're voting for..

Spring training 1954: An injury opened the door for Hank Aaron in the Braves' outfield

Baseball is back.  I don't care for 12 teams in the post season, but at least the game is back.

Here in Texas, ownership opened up the off-season wallets and brought big names like Corey Seager to the new stadium.

And there's one other thing that bears thinking about the great Henry Aaron passed away in January 2021.

Shortly after, the "woke" MLB Commissioner moved the All Star Game from Atlanta to Denver.  He denied Atlanta's businesses a lot of money and the opportunity to remember the great Aaron.

Back in 1954, a young Hank Aaron went to spring training hoping to go north with the Braves.  He had been in the Braves system for a few years, as reported by The Society for Baseball Research:

On June 14, 1952, Aaron signed with Braves scout Dewey Griggs, and reported to the Class C Eau Claire Bears. There the coaches helped him eliminate his cross-handed batting grip, and the results were staggering. The infielder, despite playing in only 87 games, batted .336 with nineteen doubles and not only earned a spot on the league’s All-Star squad, but at the end of the season was selected as the Northern League’s Rookie of the Year.

So Aaron came into camp with a reputation but was probably not ready to break into a major league lineup.  Back then, there were 8 teams in each league compared to 15 today.  In other words, there were 400 major league positions to fill compared to 750 today.

On this day in 1954, an injury to veteran Bobby Thomson opened the door for the young Aaron.   Giants fans may remember that Thomson hit that famous home run to win the NL pennant in 1951, i.e. The Giants win the pennant, the Giants win the pennant.

Young Aaron made the team and hit his first home run against old Yankee Vic Raschi, now with the Cardinals, in the first two weeks of the season.  He batted .280 with 13 HR & 69 RBI.  Aaron was 4th in the Rookie of the Year voting behind Wally Moon, Ernie Banks and Gene Conley.

And as they say the rest is history ... and 755 home runs.

Get well Rich Peverley

It was quite a week for the Dallas Stars.

Last Saturday night, they retired Modano's #9 jersey in a great ceremony.

A couple of days ago, Rich Peverley collapsed during the game and had to be rushed to a hospital.    It was the scariest thing that ever happened in a NHL game.

Get well Rich.  We understand that Rich will be under observation and probably not play this season.  Let's hope that he can resume his NHL career next season.

Ian: What were you thinking?

Ian Kinsler, one of the best players ever to wear a Rangers uniform, was traded to Detroit a few months ago for Prince Fielder.

Frankly, it was a good baseball trade but it's always hard to say goodbye to a favorite Ranger.

From 2006 to 2013, Ian was a good second baseman who hit with power and always played hard.    I had no complaints about Ian as a player.   He played hard and gave the fans their money's worth.

A couple of weeks ago, Ian said some stupid things about his former team and GM Jon Daniels.  They were unnecessary and made Ian look small, specially the one about the Rangers going 0-162.

We wish Ian the best in Detroit.    Let's hope that Ian stays away from reporters or thinks before he makes any comments.

This is our Wednesday sports show with David Busby and Carlos Torres:
