Once upon a time, she’d have been called a socialist
We are happy to see this: “If Ocasio-Cortez is a Party Model, ‘The Dems Won’t Have a Very Bright Future’”
Glad to see Senator Lieberman back in the saddle. He is a sane voice in a party that is quickly going insane.
The biggest problem with Miss Ocasio-Cortez is that she is not very smart, whether she is talking about Israel or economic issues, as David Catron wrote:
Since her surprise primary victory over 10-term Congressman Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th District, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been promoted by the legacy media as the prototype of a new generation of young progressives destined to replace the leadership of the Democratic Party.Unfortunately for her media boosters, however, she keeps blowing her lines. It’s not just her rote advocacy of single-payer healthcare and guaranteed government jobs, or even that she backs wacky ideas like abolishing ICE and occupying airports — Ocasio-Cortez is genuinely clueless.She outed herself, in several recent interviews, as functionally illiterate in economics, international relations, and history.
Ocasio-Cortez is a joke and not a funny one if you believe that politics is a place for the informed. Her primary victory makes two points:
1) The left, the people we used to call socialists, are now the source of enthusiasm in the Democratic Party; and,
2) Mr. Lieberman, and other serious Democrats, need to throw out these leftist ideologues. Eventually, leftists like Ocasio-Cortez will destroy the party or make governing impossible. Can you imagine how self-destructive it would be for a Democrat majority trying to impeach President Trump in the middle of a booming economy?
Frankly, not long ago people like Ocasio-Cortez would have been denied entrance to the Democratic Party. They would have been told to take their socialism down the street somewhere else.
It’s time for the Democrats to cut ties with these people. The net result may be short-term losses. However, it will give centrist Democrats an opportunity to compete in the center, a far better place to wage elections between San Francisco or the Bronx.

Improving the quality of life in Central America is the only long term solution
We've had a US-Mexico border crisis for years. Everyone seems to have an opinion about it, from what they call immigration reform, to work visas, to amnesty or building a border fence.
The latest idea is to have Central Americans ask for asylum in Mexico, their first stop after leaving their homelands.
It's not a new thought but some are talking about it again.
Frankly, it's not a workable idea for a few reasons:
First, Mexico won't go for it. Why does Mexico want hundreds of people seeking asylum and flooding their southern states;
Second, my guess is that they will stay in Mexico long enough to get asylum and then figure out how to get to the US, their ultimate objective; and,
Related to my second point, The Washington Post has concerns for the safety of Central Americans in Mexico:
In a recent report, Doctors Without Borders noted that two-thirds of Guatemalan, Salvadoran and Honduran migrants in Mexico have reported being victims of violence; almost a third of migrant women there had been sexually assaulted.So what do we do?
Twelve of the world’s 50 most violent cities are in Mexico. Forcing refugees to seek sanctuary in Mexico would thrust tens of thousands of them into a country with weak law enforcement, a flimsy judicial system, an anemic asylum process and predatory criminal gangs.
Under those circumstances, it is folly to think migrants would stay put. Much more likely, they would simply find a way to enter the United States illegally, even without the chance to apply for asylum here.
There are no quick answers. Nevertheless, forcing these countries to improve their quality of life is the only one that makes sense to me.
