Another Friday of very weird economic news!

Another Friday and the US economy provided more proof that we are nowhere close to a recovery.

Here are the numbers:  U.S. Adds a Modest 80,000 Jobs; Rate Drops to 9%

Yes, we are happy that the unemployment rate dropped to 9% but 80,000 jobs is a major disappointment.

We need about 150,000 new jobs every month just to take care of the new people looking for work.

Our biggest problem is that the US economy is just not growing.  It is a problem here but also around the world.

What would the European problems look like if we had 4 or 5% GDP growth?

What would our federal budget deficit be if we had 5 or 6% unemployment?

The answer to both is that our economy needs growth and lots of it!

Unfortunately, the economic projections for the next year are not every encouraging:

"The Federal Reserve has already projected that the unemployment rate will be at least 8.5 percent at the end of next year, meaning the next presidential term would start with a higher rate than the 7.3 percent Mr. Obama inherited when he took office." (NYTimes)

My reaction to Senator Rubio in Dallas!

On Friday, Senator Rubio gave a speech at The Hispanic Voter Network in Dallas.

It was a good morning to say hello to a few friends & listen to Senator Rubio.

First, Senator Rubio is an excellent speaker.  He did not read from a teleprompter or follow a piece of paper.  He spoke easily and candidly about issues of interest to Hispanics.

Second, he discussed the ideological battle in Washington today.  On one hand, the Dem party supports the expansion of government.  On the other hand, the GOP wants a smaller government.  This is what 2012 will be all about!

Third, he correctly said that Big Government vs Big Business is a false choice.  We need to make it easier for small businesses to compete in the marketplace.  You can't do that if government issues regulations that intimidate small businesses or entrepreneurs.

Last, but not least, Sen Rubio spoke about immigration and called to repair the broken system.  In other words, we need more legal immigrants.  We need a sensible way to hire people legally.

Overall, I was impressed with Sen Rubio's demeanor and presentation.

Will he be the GOP VP nominee?  My guess is that he is every one's first choice although Sen Rubio has not expressed any interest in that job.

A Romney-Rubio ticket?  I like it a lot!
