When comedy gets too political

Image result for david frye images
If you remember Chevy Chase doing President Ford or Dan Aykroyd doing President Jimmy Carter, then you remember the days of good political humor at “Saturday Night Live.”
Or, remember David Frye doing President Richard M. Nixon on one of those 1970s LPs?
Political humor is a wonderful thing.  In fact, there is a story that a Mexican president had an aide going around the country picking up jokes about him.  Why?  He wanted to know what people were really thinking and humor was an important barometer.
So humor is great.  It’s good for both sides to laugh about current events.  Politics is not supposed to be “life and death” 24/7.
Enter “Saturday Night Live” and the late-night shows.  This poll comes as no surprise:
As the weekly target of Saturday Night Live’s “humor,” President Trump’s disgruntlement with the show is understandable. According to a new poll conducted by The Hollywood Reporter and Morning Consult, however, it isn’t just him who has grown weary of SNL’s shtick.
The poll found that 39 percent of the respondents feel that SNL is now “too political.”
Almost half of the sample feel that the show in its present incarnation is “more liberal,” while five percent of those polled live in some Bizarro world where they feel It’s “more conservative.”
The relentless focus on politics in late-night comedy is certainly tedious. Jay Leno recently lamented that very thing in an interview.
Or listen to Johnny Carson, the king of late night comedy for 30 years!
There is a fine line between comedy and partisanship.  It’s one thing to make fun of Trump’s personality and attacking him in a mean way.  Political humor is difficult, but it ceases to be humor when you are always picking on the same guy.  It won’t take long for viewers to see that you are attacking rather than doing comedy.

What would my Cuban abuela say of these Democrats running for President?

My Abuela died in 1984. She had a great life story. Her name was Rudisenda Gertrudiz De Los Dolores Enriqueta Josefina and then her last name. It was fun putting all of that on her passport when she left Cuba. She was born in Cuba in 1892 or before independence. Best of all, she was very good at reading people and specially judging politicians.
So what would she say today about this crop of Democrats running for President? I think that she would write a post for Babalu and say that this situation “me preocupa” or her favorite word.
We seem to have a perfect storm of crazy ideas floating around. This is the latest from Andrew Yang:
The Democratic candidate revealed in a little-noticed tweet last week that he was against the ritualized practice of cutting a newborn’s foreskin. But in an interview with The Daily Beast, he said that if he were elected he would incorporate that view into public policy, mainly by pushing initiatives meant to inform parents that they don’t need to have their infants circumcised for health reasons.
Yes, it is true and more insanity coming the left.
First, are U.S. parents forced to circumcised? I am not aware of that. i thought that it was a personal decision.
Second, how exactly is a President Yang going to enforce this? My guess is that even the 9th Circuit would find this one a bit crazy.
What’s going on?
The left is not serious, period.  This is not a topic for government to get into. In other words, the same people who get in your face about a woman’s choice now want to take away her choice to circumcise her son. Go figure!
How did we get to the point where running for president is a joke?  I think that my Abuela would say that “la cosa esta loca, muy loca”.

A socialist is always a socialist

We hear a lot about Senator Sanders and his socialist path. Here is another example
Several new staffers have joined the presidential campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.), including David Sirota, a columnist and political activist who once praised the economic policies of former Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez.
In a 2013 column for Salon, Sirota credited Chavez’s “full-throated advocacy of socialism” with achieving an economic miracle. “As shown by some of the most significant indicators, Chavez racked up an economic record that a legacy-obsessed American president could only dream of achieving,” he wrote.
Have you seen David Sirota down in Caracas defending Hugo Chavez’ ideas? My guess is that Sirota is doing everything that he can to delete that stupid column.
