Not since Evita

Not since Evita: Just spoke on a radio show in Buenos Aires. I commented that I have not seen so much interest in Argentina since Madonna brought back Evita. Yes, I mean there is a lot of interest in the loud and outspoken fellow with funny hair.

We remember Irving Berlin who was born in Tyumen, Russia, on this day in 1888.    Berlin moved to the US as a child.   Over time, he became one of the most popular songwriters in the US.   His songs included "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "What’ll I Do" and "White Christmas."    He also wrote the soundtrack for several movies such as "Puttin’ on the Ritz", "Easter Parade" and "Annie Get Your Gun".

He died in 1989, at age 101.

Happy # 83 Eric Burdon

We remember Eric Burdon who was born in England on this day in 1941.

Burdon was the lead singer for The Animals, from "House of the rising sun" to my super favorite "San Franciscan nights".

Then he moved on to War and had that great 45 "Spill the wine".

Super voice and a big part of that British Invasion of 1964.

We remember Milt Pappas (1939-2016)

Milt Pappas was born on this day in 1939.  He died in 2016 at the age of 76.

Pappas will always be remembered as the man traded for Frank Robinson.    It turned out to be a great trade for the Orioles with Robinson leading the team to 4 of the next 6 World Series.

It wasn't so good for Pappas.    He won 110 games over 8 years in Baltimore.   He went 99-90 in Cincinnati, Chicago and Atlanta.    In all fairness to Pappas, he went from a great team in Baltimore to teams that never competed for the pennant.   His numbers after Baltimore have to been seen in that context.

Pappas finished his career with 209 wins and a no-hitter in 1972.

1858: Minnesota joined the union

We salute the beautiful state of Minnesota.    The 32nd state joined the union on this day in 1858.

Today, it is the home of the Vikings, the Twins and 10,000 lakes.
