It's great: Global warming did not kill the polar bears after all

We are very  happy to report that the death reports of the polar bear were a big premature:

"The debate about climate change and its impact on polar bears has intensified with the release of a survey that shows the bear population in a key part of northern Canada is far larger than many scientists thought, and might be growing."

Hooray for the polar bears.   Boo for all those fanatics who scared little children and got people all over to buy into all of these global warming hysteria.

Pres BO's "Si se puede" was "muy cinico"

According to Dick Morris, Pres BO faces an enthusiasm gap in 2012.  In other words, there are not a lot of people jumping up and down screaming "yes we can" or "si se puede" anymore.  The thrill is gone as BB King used to sing!

Morris points out that BO's 2008 victory was sort of a perfect storm, i.e. the extraordinary combination of young people, blacks and Hispanos voting in numbers that they had never voted before.  It was a fairy tale and too good to be true.

Hispanos face a moment of truth with respect to Pres BO.

Here is the question that many Hispanos need to answer:  How much longer are they going to make excuses for Pres BO?

Ruben Navarrette blows up the 'si se puede" story with a step by step account of how candidate BO lied, and continues to lie, about his record.

Ruben reminds us that it was then Senator BO who was for the labor unions and against a compromise that would have given millions here an opportunity for a work visa.

Ruben reminds us that the Dem party has done nothing to promote immigration reform.  Also, the Dem party did not take up "The Dream Act" until after the 2010 election or when there were zero political consequences for Congress.

We hope that the Spanish speaking media will make Ruben's article required reading in their newsrooms.  We further hope that Spanish speaking journalists will challenge Pres BO to answer questions in 2012.  Unfortunately, they didn't in 2008!

Aren't you tired of hearing Pres BO tell Spanish journalists that the terrible GOP stands in the way of an immigration resolution?  Doesn't that fall in the category of insulting your intelligence?

Here is the legacy of 'si se puede":

1) No serious effort to pass any kind of immigration reform;

2) An annual "5 de Mayo" speech with no follow up to Congress; and,

3) Very high unemployment in Hispanic communities despite that "stimulus" that was supposed to keep unemployment under 8%.

That's the legacy of "si se puede".  It's time for "Hispanos" to start demanding some results rather than cheering the next "Cinco de Mayo" speech.

Great opening day for the Rangers

What a wonderful opening day script.

First, Coby Lewis pitches 6 solid innings.  He is followed by Alexi Ogando, Mike Adams and closer Joe Nathan has a 1-2-3 inning to finish the game.

Ian Kinsler hits a HR.  Josh Hamilton & Michael Young drive big runs.  Yorbi Torrealba throws out a runner at second base.

Overall, the Rangers played flawless baseball on opening day.

We know that the Rangers won't look that good in every game.  Nevertheless, it was fun to watch.

A very nice Friday night at St Catherine of Sienna

Our church had a very unique service for Good Friday.

We read The Passion of Christ, followed by the adoration of the cross and communion.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate a solemn Good Friday.

Thank you Father Matthew.  He has done a great job as our priest since you moved to our parish in 2003.

It's time for the GOP to rally around Romney and go after Obama

It's not over but it is over.  It's hard to see how Santorum can win over 70% of the remaining delegates.  It's hard to see it with the April calendar.

So it's time for Santorum to end his campaign and let Romney start preparing a campaign against Obama.

Let me say this about Rick Santorum.  He is a good man.  I love his family and specially the little girl Bella.  He is a true conservative and a man of great integrity.

However, this is not his year.  He is too closely identified with social issues but the country needs more an executive, a man who understands turning around a failed enterprise called the US federal government.

Santorum will be back.  It won't help his legacy to hang around when he is so far behind.  Drop out gracefully and join the battle against Obama.

Twilight Zone: There is something obscene about Pres BO attacking The Supreme Court with two foreign leaders by his side

This is beyond words.  This is really obscene.  I have never seen anything like it.

Yesterday, Pres BO took some rather unprecedented shots at The Supreme Court during a joint press conference with Pres Calderon of Mexico & PM Harper of Canada.

To be fair, Pres BO did not initiate the conversation.  He was asked a question about the Supreme Court and last week's presentation about the constitutionality of the law.

Pres BO should have said:

1) This is not a good time for that question because we have guests and the topic is NAFTA or other trade relations; and,

2) I respect The Supreme Court.  They have every right to review my law.

Instead, Pres BO unleashed a rather crude attack on the Court.  He questioned its legitimacy, i.e. unelected.

This is so typical Obama.  This is the kind of bitter side of Obama that we are going to see if the Court overturns the law or he is defeated in November.

This is a man who can not appreciate that people can have honest differences with his view of the world, our Constitution or his economic ideas.

If you disagree then you just don't appreciate how smart Obama is.....or you just don't understand how important all of those bankrupt green technologies companies are to the future of the world......(Another company goes under)

The WSJ has a "must reading" editorial today:

"President Obama is a former president of the Harvard Law Review and famously taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago. But did he somehow not teach the historic case of Marbury v. Madison?"

Bill Katz expanded on the topic this morning:

"I've been observing presidents for longer than I care to admit, but I must report that I've never seen anything quite as weird as Barack Obama's strange performance yesterday, delivered in the presence of the president of Mexico and the prime minister of Canada, who were visiting."

The Supreme Court is doing what it was designed to do by The Founding Fathers.  The court was created to review the constitutionality of laws passed by Congress.

Ironically, BO-Care would be "home free" if Pres BO & Dems had been honest from day one and funded the plan with a "tax".

Pres BO & Dems didn't have the political courage to call it a tax, or something that Congress can do under our Constitution.  Instead, they created this weak approach of extending the commerce clause and forcing Americans to purchase insurance.

Pres BO also said that he used to hear conservatives talk about judicial activism.  He is right about.  We conservatives have criticized judges who legislate or find "rights" that are not in the Constitution, such as abortion or same sex-marriage.

Barry Casselman is right.  Wonder how the Justices in The Supreme Court enjoy hearing that from Pres BO?  They probably didn't.  Click for our Tuesday conversation:

Yes...the GOP has a big problem with women who support abortion, socialized medicine and free birth control pills

We've been hearing a lot about the GOP and women.  According to a new poll, support from women is driving up Pres BO's ratings.

However, is there anything really new in this poll?

From Pres Nixon to Pres GW Bush, the GOP has carried the gender gap "burden".  However, the GOP won 7 of 10 elections from 1968 to 2004.

Pres BO's election in 2008 was not about "the gender gap".  It was really about a larger than usual voter turnout among blacks, Hispanics and college students.

William Gurn of The WSJ has a few thoughts about the aforementioned poll and 2012.  I agree with Mr Gurn is that this poll is a bit confusing and hard to follow.

My guess is that women will vote in 2012 in much the same way that they've voted for the last 50 years:

1) Married women, specially those with children, will vote GOP.  This is the one group that reelected Pres Bush in 2004 because they wanted a president who'd protect the homeland, i.e. their children!  (2008 Married women voted for McCain over BO, 53-44%)

2) Single women will vote Dem.  This is also true of single mothers who depend on government services for support.  Unfortunately, the government has become the "father" and "husband" in many of these single mother households. (Unmarried women voted for BO over McCain)

3) Women who attend church regularly will vote GOP and those who don't attend religious services will vote Dem.  (Gallup)

4) Women who don't support abortion will vote GOP.  Women who think that abortion is a "choice" will vote Dem.

My point is that things have not changed that much, no matter how much the media wants to drum up this "war on women" campaign.

Also, don't underestimate "pocketbook issues" because women are usually the ones who go shopping and fill up the family car.

Check out our Monday night show about women in 2012:

My thoughts on women and 2012

According to a new poll, Pres BO's chances have been boosted by support from women in swing states:

"In the fifth Swing States survey taken since last fall, Obama leads Republican front-runner Mitt Romney 51%-42% among registered voters just a month after the president had trailed him by two percentage points."

Of course, Gov Romney has a + 8 advantage with men.    Therefore, Gov Romney's challenge is to close the gap.

Frankly, I find this poll a bit too "rosy" for Pres BO.  It'd be interesting to see the sample for a better appreciation.  William Gurn of The WSJ has a few questions a bout the poll, too.  I agree with him that we need to see the sample.

Also, what are the numbers for married women?   The GOP usually does better with married than single women.  What about women who attend church regularly?  Women are not a monolithic group when it comes to voting or issues.

Nevertheless, the "gender gap" will be a factor, as it has been in every election since the 1970s.

So how does the GOP "appeal" to more women?

First, let's talk about the direction of the country.

Second, what about the national debt?  Whose children will be burdened with that?

Third, Pres BO projecting weakness abroad, such as telling the President of Russia to wait until after the election for a better deal.

Fourth, the economy and and gas prices, a couple of tough issues for women.

At the end of the day, the GOP needs to draw a contrast and it will win.

We spoke about 2012 and the role of conservative women on Monday's show:

The students today are underemployed rather than drunk on "hope and change"

Once upon a time, candidate BO had lots of support at the colleges and universities.   I recall watching university students with BO-Shirts all over in 2008.

That was then and this is now:

"Obama enjoyed a wave of youth support in his run to the presidency, winning 66 percent of voters aged 18-to-29 in the race against Republican Senator John McCain. Twenty-two million young voters cast ballots, making up about 18 percent of the electorate -- two million more than in 2004, according to exit polls and the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement.

Today that passion has cooled amid gridlock and partisanship in Washington and a surge in unemployment that is souring young voters."

Pres BO's biggest problem is that young people bought into the fantasy along with blacks and Hispanics.

We discussed in a prior post about the unemployment rate in black and Hispanic communities, i.e. 14% & 10% respectively.   No hope and change, or at least not the kind of change that Hispanics & blacks had hoped for.

Young people have another problem, i.e. underemployment.  They can't find work related to their studies.   We are also seeing more and more young people moving in with their parents because they can't afford to live by themselves.

Beyond economics, I think that a lot of young people are just disenchanted, or the kind of feeling that you have in your stomach when someone lied to you.   Too many young people bought into closing GITMO, the nonsense about the Bush police state and how Obama's smile was going to lower the world's temperatures.

We say it again.  There won't be any magic in 2012 no matter how many millions the Obama campaign spends to register and drive voters to cast their ballot.

The Pope missed a great opportunity

Yes, we understand that The Pope did not go to Cuba to overthrow the corrupt Castro regime or to support the dissident movement.  We are aware of the fact that this is outside the scope of a papal visit.

At the same time, The Pope is not another head of state going to Cuba to cut a deal with the Castro brothers.  The Pope is the leader of the Catholic Church, the same church has been the target of repression in the last 50 years.

Therefore, The Pope missed a great opportunity to remind everyone that the Catholic Church values life (abortion is free in Cuba), liberty (there is none in Cuba) and giving all Cubans freedom from repression and censorship.

First, he should have required the presence of "las damas en blanco" at the public mass.  It was a public mass....wasn't it?

Second, he should have said publicly that the Catholic faith is about dignity and respect for all.

Third, he should have reminded the Castro brothers that their kind of corrupt "top down" crony capitalism is unacceptable.  In other words, investors who invest in Cuba are funding the Castro Family Estate account in Swiss banks not helping the Cuban people.

Fourth, why did he have a private meeting with Fidel Castro, the man who expelled priests & nuns rather than Cubans who can't practice their faith freely?

Last, but not least, he should have reminded Cubans that the US embargo is not responsible for the 50-year old disaster in the island.

Again, it was a great opportunity to do something positive rather than passive.  The Pope chose the passive approach.  Someone should have reminded The Pope that he was in Cuba not Costa Rica.

Ray Walser of The Heritage Foundation is one of our favorite US-Latin American analysts.  I liked what he wrote:

"The Pope made no mention of jailed American Alan Gross and pleased his Cuban hosts by denouncing the U.S. trade embargo. The visit also gave greater prominence to the mediating role of the Catholic Church on the island and the work of Cuban Cardinal Jaime Ortega.

The Cuban regime stepped up repression aimed at keeping dissidents away from the Pope. Cell phones went dead all over the island. More than 200 peaceful dissidents were rounded up before the Pope’s arrival to prevent them from showing up at his public meetings, human rights groups reported. A dissident who shouted “down with communism” during the pope’s Mass in Santiago de Cuba was beaten and arrested in front of cameras.

While human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Freedom House have all spoken up about continued repression in Cuba, the Vatican remained distressingly silent on the latest incidents and crackdown."

Perhaps I'm wrong.  Frankly, I'd like to be wrong about this post but it's hard to get excited about watching The Pope sitting next to Raul & Fidel Castro.  Wonder what all of those Cuban Catholics who witnessed this regime murder their families think about this?
