Winning the presidency is important. However, winning the US Senate is a must for the GOP.
The presidential race is still a dead heat. Romney is up 2 with likely voters and Obama is up 5 with registered voters. Again, it looks like a dead heat to me and Obama is still under 50%!
There is a CNN poll of swing states: Romney 51, Obama 43.
Barry Casselman, The Prairie Editor, has a good analysis of the US Senate races. Barry feels that the GOP will win the majority:
"A cursory look at the math, now has Republicans with a likely net gain of five or six, and a chance at a net gain of two or three more.
If President Obama's re-election falters badly, more Democratic-held seats could fall. With prospects for Democratic gains in the U.S. house now thought to be no more than single digits. the likelihood of the vonservative-controlled both houses of Congress in 2013 is high.

We will look at this again around Labor Day but I think that Barry is right about the fact that the GOP will have the House and Senate.
On another front, is Pres BO running out of money? We heard today that Pres BO was begging donors for money. He made the calls from Air Force One:
"Details of the call emerged days after Mr Obama warned supporters that he
would be "the first president in modern history to be outspent" by
his opponent unless donors upped their contributions."
We understand that Pres BO needs money to pay for the "ground game" that will get voters out to vote, or a repeat of 2008 when candidate BO had tons of cash. On the other hand, Gov Romney is raising lots of cash.
