What does a 17-7 record mean? Does it mean that the Rangers are the best team in baseball?
We won't pop champagne after 23 games but the Rangers are making a pretty case for being the best team in the majors.
First, they've won 17 games by beating Boston, NY, Detroit and Tampa.
Second, Texas is 9 games up on LA. It means that the Angels will have to win 9 more games than the Rangers to catch up.
For example, let's say that Texas goes 60-60 (or .500) then the Angels would have to go 69-51 or .575 baseball!
Can the Angels play .575 baseball over the next 120 games?
Here is a better question: Will the Rangers ONLY play .500 over the next 120 games?
Texas has a very healthy lead on LA and it will not be easy for the Angels to make up those games.
Third, the Rangers' pitching has been excellent. Darvish is 4-0 with a 2.18 ERA. Lewis is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA. Harrison is 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA.
Fourth, Josh Hamilton is on his way to another MVP year: .395 BA with 9 HRs and 25 RBI's. At this pace, he would hit 50 HRs and drive in a ton of runs.
We don't expect the Rangers to win 120 games. However, this team has a real shot at 95-100.
Congratulations to Ron Washington and everyone in the dugout. The Rangers are playing than ever!
