Maybe we will see a 'mom' ad in Brazil

Maybe we will see a 'mom' ad in Brazil:

It's getting nasty down in Brazil in front of Sunday's election.

-------------------------------

It's getting nasty down in Brazil in front of Sunday's election. As you probably know, President Lula is behind in polls against Flavio Bolsonaro, the former president's son. Did I tell you that the former president is under house arrest for challenging the election results?

We have not seen a son going after his father's critics since George W. Bush took out Governor Ann Richards in Texas. Remember "Poor George, he can't help it -- he was born with a silver foot in his mouth." That was sweet back in 1994, and I hope that Flavio can share the stage with father Jair on Sunday night when he wins, as expected.

Well, let's check this out from Beege Welborn:

Now Lula has a serious problem. What was supposed to be one more cakewalk to another duly regime-engineered term as the country's ersatz democratically elected president has turned into a dogfight that has the eyes of the world on it. And worse -- Lula under the harsh scrutiny of the United States and its president.

He is reacting badly.

The run-off election is three days from now, on Sunday the 25th.

This past Sunday's debate between the two contenders was a fiery, raucous affair, during which Lula threw threats around like Carnival confetti.

Yes, Lula is getting desperate. I guess that he doesn't want to join the long list of Latin American leaders thrown out by voters. Lula looks around, and he sees Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and it's a different planet than it was a few years ago.

Many fear that President Lula will play the legal card and cancel Bolsonaro's victory. Many fear this, but Brazilians won't stand for it. It will throw the country in total chaos, and the streets will have more people than their famous carnivals.

So let's hope for calm. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if Lula runs an ad using Bolsonaro's mother, even if they have to use AI to make it happen.

Carville: It’s the DSA, stupid

Carville: It’s the DSA, stupid:

A Democrat victory in the midterms could cause a headache for Democrats.

--------------------

James Carville became famous when he told Democrats in 1992 that it was the economy, stupid.  I don’t know whether it was Carville’s idea or the Perot candidacy that elected Bill Clinton in 1992, but everyone remembers his line.  It also made a star out of Carville, who predicted that V.P. Harris would win.  He is also predicting a Trump wipeout and resignation next spring followed by a Vance pardon.  We will see about that one.

Let’s come to 2026 and hear from Carville again:

Democratic strategist James Carville said during an interview on Sunday that he would rather the Republicans win by five seats in the House of Representatives in the midterm elections than the Democrats win by the same number, worrying that the Democratic Party would become “hostages” to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

Carville is predicting a big victory for the Democrats but is concerned that a small House majority will put the DSA in control.  And he is right!  The reality is that even a big victory would put the DSA in charge, because the left will fight the center on the House floor.  These DSA members are not going to moderate to work with the center.  Instead, they will pick fights with the center and threaten everyone with primaries in 2028.  Why?  Because they hate the party leaders as much as they hate Trump.  These people are not really Democrats!

Let’s see what Carville is saying after the midterms, but he has a point that the DSA is not going anywhere except to make life miserable for the party and wonderful for President Trump.

We remember Bobby Thomson (1923-2010)

----------
Bobby Thomson was born in Scotland on this day in 1923.

A few years ago, Bill Katz of URGENT AGENDA alerted me to the passing of Bobby Thomson.

Thomson was a very good player:   264 HR and one of the NL's best power hitters of the early 1950s! (averaged 102 RBI over a five-year stretch with the Giants from 1949-53)

However, he will always be remembered for hitting the greatest home run in baseball history:  A 1951 NL pennant clinching home run by a Giants team that was 14 games out of first place Brooklyn in June!  And the greatest radio baseball call ever!

Rest in peace Bobby Thomson! You gave us one of the greatest baseball moment ever!

Grenada 1983: A victory for the good guys and a big defeat for Cuba’s Castro

Back on this day in 1983, President Reagan invaded Grenada.  It turned out to be a major victory against Fidel Castro and prevented the USSR from having another strategic piece of real estate over here.
Grenada was a small island where some U.S. citizens were attending medical school. Most people had never heard of Grenada or the Cuban efforts to turn the island into a communist beachhead, an important runway for Soviet MiGs.
However, the Reagan administration had their eye on Grenada for some time. They knew the strategic importance of Grenada and its proximity to the Panama Canal.
We also learned on this week in 1983 how foreign policy can force itself on the agenda.
In Grenada, we saw President Reagan as the competent leader of the free world, or a man unwilling to let the USSR gain a strategic foothold over here.
It was quite a week for leadership, President Reagan and the U.S.

October 25, 1764: Remembering the day that John Adams married Abigail Smith

We enjoy posting about The Founding Fathers.  Today, we remember John Adams and his wife Abigail.  He was our first VP and second president (1797-1801).  She was our second First Lady and the mother of our 7th president, John Quincy Adams.

On October 25, 1764 John and Abigail were married.   They also wrote awesome letters about marriage, their children and views on so many issues dividing the colonies.  The letters are a great window into the Adams' lives, feelings and thoughts during those difficult days of The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and the new government.

Carville talks, Brazil on Sunday plus more

Carville talks, Brazil on Sunday plus more........

1986: Bill Russell retired from the Dodgers

From 1974 to 1986, Bill Russell was the Dodgers' shortstop.   It was Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Ron Cey and Russell who made up that wonderful infield.

The Dodgers won the NL pennant in 1974, 1977, and 1978.   LA finally won in 1981!

Russell broke with LA in 1969 and became the regular shortstop in 1972.   He retired in 1986 with 1,926 hits and a .263 batting average.

We will remember Russell and the other 3 as that steady Dodgers' infield:  they combined for 21 All-Star game appearances!

1969: "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid" debut in the US

On this day in 1969, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford as a team of bank robbers in the Old West, opened in theaters around the United States.

It was a great movie and huge commercial success.    My favorite scene is Paul Newman and Katharine Ross on the bicycle with B J Thomas singing in the background.

The story was based on the lives of the two outlaws down in Bolivia...

October 1969: "Paul is dead" or so they said

The good and bad news is that I remember all of the controversy in school.   It started on the radio and some college newspapers.   Later, it was on our local stations and even the subject of classroom chatter.

The headline was that Paul McCartney had died in a car accident and buried in a secret grave.     It allegedly happened in that long period of silence between the last tour date in San Francisco and Sgt. Pepper's in early 1967.

The next part was that The Beatles had clues on their LP covers and even messages hidden in songs like "Strawberry Fields Forever" and that horrible track called "Revolution # 9" from The White Album.

Like most crazy things, it got out of control and got silly crazy.    Eventually, LIFE sent reporters to the UK to look for Paul.    They found him, recently married to Linda and living in a farm up in Scotland.    And then all of a sudden Paul was alive and well.
