Hillary Clinton is not really about hard choices

(My new American Thinker post)

Last year, Hillary Clinton published a book about leadership. It was called Hard Choices. This is one of the reviews:
“To its credit, Clinton’s memoir is serious, sober and substantive…. No fair-minded reader could finish this book and doubt Clinton’s essential command of the issues, whatever one might think of her solutions for them. She roams widely and delves into war and peace, terrorism and Russia, economic development and women’s rights. She knows the players and the history.” (Peter Baker, New York Times Book Review)

Of course, every candidate for president wants to talk about hard choices. This is specially true of Mrs Clinton who owns with President Obama one heck of a mess of a foreign policy.

Yesterday, Mrs Clinton reminded us that she is not really about hard choices after all. She is now opposed to the TPP trade deal, or the same one that she called the gold standard:

Mrs. Clinton was asked on PBS’s NewsHour whether the trade deal is “something you could support?”
Her reply: “What I know about it, as of today, I am not in favor of what I have learned about it. And there is one other element I want to make, because I think it’s important. Trade agreements don’t happen in a vacuum, and in order for us to have a competitive economy in the global marketplace, there are things we need to do here at home that help raise wages. And the Republicans have blocked everything President Obama tried to do on that front. So for the larger issues, and then what I know, and again, I don’t have the text, we don’t yet have all the details, I don’t believe it’s going to meet the high bar I have set.”
So she hasn’t seen the agreement’s text, and can’t speak to the details, but she’s against the deal because Republicans who haven’t held the White House in seven years haven’t raised wages.
No profile in courage.

What if Mrs Clinton had said something like this: "I was part of the team that negotiated the deal. I would call on President Obama to release the text so that voters can see that we did a good job for workers and employers."

Or something like this: "Sorry, Senator Sanders but you are just pandering for votes with your attacks on the deal."

Instead, she took the easy way out and threw the TPP under the bus.

She is the same "Pander Hillary" who danced around Iraq and NAFTA in 2008. Sadly, millions will vote for her because she is a woman. I guess that identity politics trumps honesty these days with the Democrat faithful.

Trump a bit hard to follow on Iraq

(My new American Thinker post)

There are two things that I don't like about Mr. Trump.  First, he thinks that everybody in government is stupid.  Second, he thinks that he is really smart.  I guess that I just don't like people like that, even if we can agree on some issues.

On Iraq, Mr. Trump is not as clear as he claims.

For example, he said that he was always opposed to the war, but no such opposition can be found.

Is there a March 2013 speech opposing the war?  No.

Did he say that Saddam Hussein should stay in power as a counterbalance to Iran?  No, he didn't back in 2003-05!

What we do know is that Mr. Trump made a statement in 2004, or 18 months after the war started.  This is from Michael Calderone:
The media has largely given Trump a pass for his suggestion that he was the lone voice of dissent about the war, long after the U.S. invasion. Several journalists noted during real-time debate coverage online and on Twitter that the Iraq War started over a year before he said he was against it. But similar fact-checking has been absent from recent TV news interviews, in which Trump has seized upon his summer 2004 position to trumpet his foreign policy foresight as he campaigns to be the next commander-in-chief.
There's some evidence Trump wasn't happy with the war effort early on. About a week after the March 19, 2003 invasion, he described the war as a “mess” when The Washington Post approached him at an Oscar after-party.
But recently, Trump has primarily cited an article published by Reuters in July 2004 -- entitled "Donald Trump Would ‘Fire’ Bush Over Iraq Invasion" -- to illustrate his farsightedness about the war.
The oft-cited Reuters story doesn't provide a comprehensive look at Trump’s foreign policy worldview. It’s a brief article that references his comments in an Esquire cover story published the same week. The , and other outlets, also ran stories quoting Trump’s provocative comments to Esquire.
In the Esquire interview, Trump called the Iraq War a “mess," while also harshly criticizing how the Bush administration handled it. He dismissed the idea of Iraq becoming truly democratic, and predicted the U.S. withdrawal would lead to “a revolution, and the meanest, toughest, smartest, most vicious guy will take over.”

It would be helpful for Mr Trump to drop the cheap shots against President Bush, a man whom we understand he voted to re-elect.

We would be better-served to hear about the region in 2015.  In other words, the real mess in Iraq began when we left in 2011 and started drawing lines in 2012.

U.S.-Cuba ready to protect marine life.... .human rights not ready yet!

(My new American Thinker post)

The U.S.-Cuba relationship finally has something to boast about, according to news reports:
The Cuban and American governments have agreed to work hand in hand to protect marine life in the seas that join their countries, a move that represents the first environmental dividend of a thaw between the two Cold War foes.
Under an agreement announced Monday at an oceans conference in Valparaíso, Chile, government agencies from Cuba and the United States are to map marine life in protected areas in the Florida Straits and Gulf of Mexico and compile an inventory of shared species.
Yes, the U.S. will work with Cuba to protect marine life. What about human rights? I guess that we will have to wait a bit longer for the U.S. and Cuba to sit down and to do something about freedom of the press, the right of assembly, or some of the other rights that we've grown to value.
On another front, the Obama administration is still under pressure to settle the investors' disputes against Cuba. They go back to 1961 and was the reason for the U.S. embargo.
In the last weeks, the Cuban government made a counterclaim that the U.S. should pay damages for the embargo. In the past, from Kennedy to Bush-43, the U.S. would generally hang up the phone and not listen to such comments.
What will the Obama administration do? I am not so comfortable that they will hang up the phone like his predecessors did!

Today's crisis is a great opportunity for Latin America

(My new American Thinker post)

A few weeks ago, I met with some of my non-Mexican friends at a local lunch meeting – in other words, my Latino friends from places like Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Central America.  I also refer to them as my "fútbol friends" because baseball is not usually a topic at these sessions.

I was curious to hear their reactions to a much discussed column by Andres Oppenheimer about the growing disenchantment in Latin America.  This is a major point from the column:

South American countries, which enjoyed an economic fiesta in recent years thanks to record high world prices for their commodity exports, are suddenly finding themselves simultaneously hurt by China’s slowdown, lower commodity prices, a flight away from developing countries by international investors, and a stronger dollar that makes their imports of manufactured products more expensive.

Complicating matters further, Brazil, the giant economic engine that pulls several of its neighbors, is suffering one of its worse economic and political crises in recent years. Its economy is expected to have a negative growth rate of about 2 percent this year.

For the first time in 25 years, with one exception in 2009, Latin America’s overall economic growth may be negative this year.

This is happening at a time when most of Latin America is run by elected leaders, with the obvious exceptions of Venezuela, Ecuador, and Bolivia.  Nevertheless, many of these elected leaders have turned out be lousy governors, from the corruption in Brazil to the crony capitalism in Argentina.

The point is that there is more to democracy than having elections, as anyone living in Latin America can tell you.  You can't really do it without the rule of law.

The new crisis does offer an opportunity to move on and avoid the mistakes of the past, especially the poisonous anti-Americanism that seems to benefit only college professors, or the personality cults like Evo Morales in Bolivia and Hugo Chávez in Venezuela.

The region has the natural resources, a growing middle class, and lots of well-educated people, and it seems prime for a strong future.  It just seems to lack leaders who believe in the region's strengths.

Here are some of the points that I made to my friends:

1) Beware of China, and start looking again at the U.S.  China's economic tumbles are starting to worry many in the region.  Can the Chinese really deliver?  The recent case of "railroad diplomacy" may be a sign that doing business with China is not simple after all.  That Chinese canal in Nicaragua is not a success story, either.  U.S.-South America trade is already big, but we need to make it bigger.

2) Invest more in education, especially since most of these countries do not need large standing armies for national defense.  By the way, I am not talking about public education – rather, allow more competition so that investors are willing to take education to isolated people who could be huge consumers if they only had an education.

3) Continue to promote your exports to the world.

4) Vote for people who are willing to break the dependency on government that has corrupted Brazil, for example.

I am not sure if we got anything fixed.  They are complicated problems.  Overall, I'm happy to see that Latinos are thinking about a future rooted in the rule of law rather than personality cults.

From Perón to Castro to Chávez, I think Latinos have had their fill of populist demagogues.
